Alex Gourevitch’s From Slavery to the Cooperative Commonwealth is a valuable contribution to republican historiography: in reconstructing the ideas of the 19th century American labour republicans, this work significantly expands and enriches our appreciation of the classical republican tradition. While the labour republicans are convincingly shown to have made important contributions to that tradition, stronger claims that they fundamentally transformed republicanism are less persuasive.

The following article examines the accentual peculiarities in the Bulgarian vernacular from the second and third quarters of the 19th century as described in the dialectological publications from the same period. Bulgarian 19th-century writers go beyond the field area of recognizing and analyzing the phonetic nature of the Bulgarian dynamic accent and its effect on vowels and comment on a number of phonetic processes and phenomena, regarded as a result of the functioning of the word stress. They discuss the reduction of unstressed vowels in Eastern Bulgarian dialects, set out the Yat rule, and draw attention to the connection between Yat mutation and word stress. In their publications a number of accentual peculiarities are revealed, such as: the fixed secondary and tertiary stress in some Southwestern Bulgarian dialects, shifting the stress from the root syllable to the flexion in the definite forms of disyllabic words – a special phonetic feature in the mass of Southwestern and Rup Bulgarian dialects. In their attempts to present the diversity of the spoken language and to conceptualize it as a cultural value and a linguistic source, they present hundreds of examples which visualize the variety of local pronunciations, as well as the word-stock of the entire Bulgarian language. Their work is a valuable contribution both to the history of the Bulgarian vernacular and to the history of the Bulgarian dialectology from the 19th century.

The article is devoted to the work "Buddhist vows and the rite of laying them on the Chinese", which is devoted to the peculiarities of Buddhism in China, compiled and translated by the missionary Saint gurius (Karpov), Archbishop of Taurida, published in the collection of works of members of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Beijing and is considered a valuable contribution to European science. In this work, in particular, Saint Gury singled out Buddhists who lead a celibate lifestyle and family life, described the main themes of abstinence for Buddhists, expressed in the following specific commandments and vows of the Buddhist hierarchy of the Buddhist community, mentioned the role of hermits and lay people in Buddhism, also touched upon the practice of prayer and the description of the most terrible crimes and vices in Buddhism. Describing these provisions, the Crimean missionary referred in his work to an exemplary Buddhist Breviary based on personal observations and conversations with Heshans, and coordinated his conclusions about Buddhism with a Chinese who knew Chinese perfectly and understood the language of Buddhism. Thus, we can say that special attention is paid to the analysis and structuring of information about Buddhism, highlighting the main aspects of Buddhist vows, as well as showing the doctrinal, moral, ascetic, hierarchical and administrative features of Chinese Buddhism of the XIX century, which are useful for missionaries who conduct polemics with people who profess Buddhism.

The first Croatian phraseological dictionary, compiled in German under the title Verschiedene sprichwörtliche Redensarten was published as a part of the conversational manual accompanying the last published grammar of the Kajkavian literary language, Grammatik der kroatischen Mundart. Its author, Ignac Kristijanović, had accomplished this pioneering undertaking against the contemporary practice, listing the idioms as separate phraseological units in form of a small phraseological dictionary, and not within the dictionary entries of the general dictionary. The paper deals with the macro- and microstructure of Kristijanović’s dictionary within the theoretical framework of the so-called Zagreb School of Phraseology (Menac, Fink-Arsovski).On the macrostructural level, the analysis focuses on the selection principles of the included units and their order in the dictionary. Special attention is paid to the question which material is included, ie. whether the dictionary contains only idioms defined in accordance with today’s phraseological theory and whether the author makes a distinction between idioms and other fixed multi-word expressions (collocations, proverbs). On the microstructural level, it is being examined which form of a idiom is taken as a lemma and how the Kajkavian idioms are translated on the German side of the dictionary (an equivalent German idiom; a German idiom and the explanation of its meaning; the description of the situation in which the idiom is being used). In addition, the question of dealing with synonymous idioms is discussed. In spite of a sporadically non-systematic treatment of structurally similar idioms as dictionary units, and taking into consideration that the Verschiedene sprichwörtliche Redensarten was compiled in the first half of the 19th century, Kristijanović’s dictionary can be viewed as an interesting and valuable contribution to Croatian and Slavic phraseology and phraseography.

In this paper, we analyse features of the grammatical descriptions in Manchu grammar books from the Qing Dynasty. Manchu grammar books exemplify how Chinese scholars gave Chinese names to grammatical concepts in Manchu such as case, conjugation, and derivation which exist in agglutinating languages but not in isolating languages. A thorough examination reveals that Chinese scholarly understanding of Manchu grammar at the time had attained a high degree of sophistication. We conclude that the reason they did not apply modern grammatical concepts until the end of the 19th century was not a lack of ability but because the object of their grammatical descriptions was Chinese, a typical isolating language.

Levantine immigration to Chile started during the last quarter of the 19th century. This immigration, almost exclusively male at the outset, changed at the beginning of the 20th century when women started following their fathers, brothers, and husbands to the New World. Defining the role and status of the Arab woman within her community in Chile has never before been tackled in a detailed study. This article attempts to broach the subject by looking at Arabic newspapers published in Chile between 1912 and the end of the 1920s. A thematic analysis of articles dealing with the question of women or written by women, appearing in publications such as Al-Murshid, Asch-Schabibat, Al-Watan, and Oriente, will be discussed.

Bodyweight exercises (also popularly known as calisthenics) is a classic training method and its practice has been widespread since the 19th century, but little evidenced in the scientific literature over the years. This type of training aims to promote multi-system adaptations using body weight as an overload with no or few implements [1–3]. This characteristic makes exercise with body weight easy to apply, in addition to having an excellent cost-benefit ratio when compared to other training possibilities that require machines or materials [4,5].
