The need and benefits of individual aircraft fatigue monitoring are now well established. There are broadly two fatigue damage methods employed for this purpose, namely, crack growth and stress (or strain)-life. The crack growth methods tend to provide a relative comparison between an aircraft’s usage and a baseline usage, while the strain-life methods provide a measure of the amount of fatigue life consumed against that (generally) demonstrated through a fatigue test. In this article, a new crack growth–based tracking method is described that also includes a measure of the certified fatigue life consumed. The damage model is compared against the results of an extensive coupon fatigue test programme for aluminium alloy 7050-T7451.

The forging die material, a high strength steel designated W513 is considered in this paper. A fatigue damage model, based on thermodynamics and continuum damage mechanics, is constructed in which both the previous damage and the loading sequence are considered. The unknown material parameters in the model are identified from low cycle fatigue tests. Damage evolution under multi-level fatigue loading is investigated. The results show that the fatigue life is closely related to the loading sequence. The fatigue life of the materials with low fatigue loading first followed by high fatigue loading is longer than that for the reversed loading sequence.

The behavior of crack growth with a view to fatigue damage accumulation on the tip of cracks is discussed. Fatigue life of welded components with initial crack in bridges under traffic loading is investigated. The study is presented in two parts. Firstly, a new model of fatigue crack growth for welded bridge member under traffic loading is presented. And the calculate method of the stress intensity factor necessary for evaluation of the fatigue life of welded bridge members with cracks is discussed. Based on the concept of continuum damage accumulated on the tip of fatigue cracks, the fatigue damage law suitable for steel bridge member under traffic loading is modified to consider the crack growth. The proposed fatigue crack growth can describe the relationship between the cracking count rate and the effective stress intensity factor. The proposed fatigue crack growth model is then applied to calculate the crack growth and the fatigue life of two types of welded components with fatigue experimental results. The stress intensity factors are modified by the factor of geometric shape for the welded components in order to reflect the influence of the welding type and geometry on the stress intensity factor. The calculated and measured fatigue lives are generally in good agreement, at some of the initial conditions of cracking, for a welded component widely used in steel bridges.

Abstract Mixing flow causes fluid temperature fluctuations near the pipe walls and may result in fatigue crack initiation. The authors have previously reported the loading sequence effect on thermal fatigue in a mixing tee. The fatigue damage around the hot spot, which was heated by the hot jet flow from the branch pipe, obtained by Miner’s rule was less than 1.0. Since the strain around the hot spot had waveforms with periodic overload, the loading sequence with periodic overload caused reduction of the fatigue life around the hot spot. In this study, the effect of a single overload on the fatigue crack growth rate was investigated in order to clarify the reduction of the fatigue life at the mixing tee due to strain with periodic overload. In addition, the prediction method of the fatigue life for the variable thermal strain at the mixing tee was discussed. It was shown the crack growth rate increased after an overload for both cases of tensile and compressive overloads. The effective strain amplitude increased after the application of a single overload. The fatigue life curve was modified by considering the increment of the effective strain range. The fatigue damage recalculated using the modified fatigue life curve was larger than 1.0 except in a few cases. The fatigue life could be assessed conservatively for variable strain at the mixing tee using the developed fatigue curve and Miner’s rule.

This paper presents the results of torsion fatigue of widely used bearing steels (through hardening with bainite, martensite heat treatments, and case hardened). An MTS torsion fatigue test rig (TFTR) was modified with custom mechanical grips and used to evaluate torsional fatigue life and failure mechanism of bearing steel specimen. Tests were conducted on the TFTR to determine the ultimate strength in shear (Sus) and stress cycle (S-N) results. Evaluation of the fatigue specimens in the high cycle regime indicates shear driven crack initiation followed by normal stress driven propagation, resulting in a helical crack pattern. A 3D finite element model was then developed to investigate fatigue damage in torsion specimen and replicate the observed fatigue failure mechanism for crack initiation and propagation. In the numerical model, continuum damage mechanics (CDM) were employed in a randomly generated 3D Voronoi tessellated mesh of the specimen to provide unstructured, nonplanar, interelement, and inter/transgranular paths for fatigue damage accumulation and crack evolution as observed in micrographs of specimen. Additionally, a new damage evolution procedure was implemented to capture the change in fatigue failure mechanism from shear to normal stress assisted crack growth. The progression of fatigue failure and the stress-life results obtained from the fatigue damage model are in good agreement with the experimental results. The fatigue damage model was also used to assess the influence of topological microstructure randomness accompanied by material inhomogeneity and defects on fatigue life dispersion.

Cumulative fatigue damage is an important consideration in determining the fatigue life of structures. A cumulative linear damage rule cannot provide a reasonable explanation for cumulative fatigue damage, but a damage curve method based on nonlinear cumulative fatigue damage model can give a reasonable explanation. In this paper, a specific mathematical model is put forward, which is based on the damage curve method. In the model, miner formula is modified properly and an exponent formula is give out to fit the damage accumulate. According to a two-step fatigue test of aluminum–alloy welded joint, the comparison between the calculated results and the testing results is less than 5%. It shows that the model is reasonable and accuracy.

Abstract. based on the accumulating fatigue damage model, with single ply plate theory and experiment data as the foundation, consider the interaction between adjacent layer and material degradation, a kind of fatigue life prediction method of fiber reinforced composite laminates is developed. The stiffness decline of each ply during cyclic loading is determined by the fatigue damage variable and the load amplitude and the fatigue life of any laminates can be predicted using the fatigue properties of single ply plate. Using this method a 3D Finite element model is established by ABAQUS software and the fatigue life and the fatigue damage evolution of a T300 / QY8911 laminats are analyzed, the results are more closer to the experimental results.

The high cycle fatigue tests for smooth specimens of TC25 titanium alloy under different stress ratios are carried out on a MTS 809 Material Test Machine at a given maximum stress level of 917MPa at ambient temperature, the high cycle fatigue lifetimes for such alloy are measured, and the effects of stress amplitude and mean stress on high cycle fatigue life are analyzed. The initial resistance is measured at the two ends of smooth specimen of TC25 titanium alloy, every a certain cycles, the fatigue test is interrupted, and the current resistance values at various fatigue cycles are measured. The ratio of resistance change is adopted to characterize the fatigue damage evolution in TC25 titanium alloy, and a modified Chaboche damage model is applied to derive the fatigue damage evolution equation. The results show that the theoretical calculated values agree well with the test data, which indicates that the modified Chaboche damage model can precisely describe the accumulated damage in TC25 titanium alloy at high cycle fatigue under unaxial loading. Finally, the high cycle fatigue lifetimes for TC25 titanium alloy specimens at different strain hardening rates are tested at a given stress ratio of 0.1, the effect of strain hardening on fatigue life is investigated based on a microstructure analysis on TC25 titanium alloy, and an expression between fatigue life and strain hardening rate is derived

Abstract Modern day combustors operate at very high temperatures which are close to combustor material softening temperatures. At the same time, to meet stringent emission legislations there is a strong drive to improve upon the rich burn combustor technology or shift to advanced lean burn combustor technologies. One of the key driver to improve emission is to save the cooling air budget and use the saved air for primary combustion but this approach would require more advanced and efficient cooling techniques. Fan shaped effusion cooling technology is a very promising technique as it offers high film cooling effectiveness. However, complex cooling features associated with this technology can lead to higher stress concertation and localized triaxial stress state. This stressstrain field in combination with a typical gas turbine engine operating cycle makes such effusion holes highly vulnerable to the thermo-mechanical fatigue failure. Hence to ensure the safety and reliability of combustor liners with such innovative features, it is essential to have thorough understanding of the stress-strain field in the vicinity and accurate prediction of life to first crack. The biggest challenge the designers and engineers face while predicting the initiation life of a structure is selecting the appropriate fatigue damage model for an application. This is due to following reasons: (a) The scatter in fatigue life predicted using different models and experimental values are very huge (b) There is no general universal method which can predict the multiaxial fatigue life accurately for all the materials and loading conditions (c) No general consensus exits among the researchers on which model have to be used for a particular application, material, loading and geometry (d) Application level studies are seldom available on this subject, most of the studies are restricted to laboratory level specimens with very limited implications to industry. Ideally, the fatigue damage model which has to be used for a particular application has to be validated through experiments. To meet this objective, several test specimens featuring novel fan shaped hole geometries were mass-produced using state of the art laser drilling technology. All these specimens were subjected to strain controlled isothermal low cycle fatigue test and the cycles to crack initiation was monitored using potential drop method. Six different multiaxial fatigue damage models (which can be used in low cycle fatigue regime) viz. Walker model, Smith Watson and Topper model (SWT), Fatemi Socie model (FS), Wang and Brown model (WB), Shang model (SW) and Xu model were selected and the life estimated by these models were compared with the experimental values. From the study it is observed that Xu model in which the damage parameter is built using the concept of shear strain energy looks most promising for this application.
