Despite increased interest and research into personal accounts of depression, it has seldom been studied specifically from the point of view everyday life. Our aim is to highlight how depression progresses in relation to everyday activities, and to interpret the process using a theory of everyday life. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 55 persons (31 women, 24 men) in their 40s who self-identified as having been depressed. Depression typically progressed as follows: It originated in a difficult life situation, which was coped with by trying to manage or by escaping to drinking. Eventually, it was not possible to carry out everyday duties. Seeking treatment and sick leave signified a disconnection from everyday obligations. Leisure activities as well as support from close people helped in coping, and gradually a new, more meaningful and enjoyable everyday life developed. Disconnection, rest, reflection, reorientation, and reorganization of life seemed to build a pathway out of depression. Thus, a depressive episode could be interpreted as a process in which the person first disengaged from the unreflected everyday and then reflectively re-engaged to it.

OBJECTIVE To investigate the socioeconomic and clinical factors that contribute to the functional independence of the oldest old of a community. METHOD Cross-sectional quantitative study whose sample consisted of 214 elderly people registered in Basic Health Units. Data were collected through structured interviews and application of the Functional Independence Measure. We used descriptive statistics, and for association of the variables we used the Student t-test, ANOVA and Tukey's test for multiple comparisons. RESULTS The significant variables that contributed to the functional independence were remaining economically active, practicing physical and leisure activities, having a social life, eating fruits, vegetables and meat. The orientation to conduct these practices reduces the demand for care and help needed in everyday activities. CONCLUSION Maintaining independence is primordial to delay disability and presents itself as an excellent field of work for nursing.

The author sees the expediency of a study in analyz-ing the results of the implementation of the program “Moscow longevity”, not only from the point of view of expanding the opportunities for the participation of senior citizens in leisure activities, as indicated in official documents, but also of overcoming the un-certainty of the life situation, minimizing the risks of the elderly through involvement in cultural and lei-sure activities. Low engagement rates indirectly characterize the conscious choice of elderly Musco-vites not in favor of the Moscow Longevity program. Most of all complaints are caused by unsuitable conditions for classes, as well as poor organization of activities. Senior citizens are still at risk due to the vacuum and uncertainty of the future. In the condi-tions of uncertainty associated with the forced in-definite self-isolation, this manifested itself especial-ly sharply: both the Moscow Longevity program and many elderly residents of the capital were not ready to break the usual way of life.

PurposeThe aim of this exploratory study is to analyze if the most used factors related to the engaging interaction and long-term engagement with online applications can be applied to WhatsApp in a context of everyday life in Madrid and to investigate what parameters would best describe the engagement with WhatsApp in this context.Design/methodology/approachA qualitative method was employed to explore the cognitive, emotional and behavioral factors that mainly comprise the experience of a user with an online application, both at a point in time and over time. Data from 30 semi-structured interviews and questionnaires from six group chats were collected and analyzed. The sample was made up of people aged from 13 to 58 years old.FindingsFindings suggest that the factors used in this study to evaluate long-term engagement and engaging interactions with WhatsApp are relevant, except for cognitive factors related to engaging interactions, indicating that the cognitive point of view is more difficult to apply in the engaging interaction analysis. Other attributes related to information retrieval are suggested, best suited to the informative use of this tool.Originality/valueLong-term engagement studies are scarcer concerning Mobile Instant Messaging applications. Regarding engagement interaction, its analysis focusing on WhatsApp has not been approached. This study suggests the convenience of using parameters related to information to evaluate the engaging interaction, according to the informative use of the application.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to understand the linkage between everyday life activities with its various aspects of leisure and the leisure-related activities undertaken when traveling as a tourist. This comparison is based on information from individuals who take on both the roles of the everyday person and the traveling tourist. Moreover, as the study is based in the UAE, a multi-cultural country, leisure activities between local residents and expatriates living in UAE are contrasted as part of the investigation. Design/methodology/approach A newly modified International Social Survey Program about Leisure Time questionnaire was used in this study to define a comprehensive list of leisure activities. This was distributed to a sample of local residents and expats living in the UAE in 2015. Pearson χ2 was used to understand the association between everyday leisure activities and travel leisure activities. Findings The results show statistically significant differences in everyday leisure activities between expats and Emirati nationals living in UAE. Moreover, a moderate (V = 0.21; p = 0.25) strength of associations between everyday activities and travel leisure activities was found in the overall sample of all UAE residents. Research limitations/implications A non-probability sampling method was used to collect the data, and no general conclusions about the segments or the total population of residents can be made at this point. However, the sample size is sufficient to examine the proposed model and understand the differences between the two resident segments (Emirati nationals vs expats) and to compare the differences in behavior between everyday leisure and tourism-related leisure activities. Practical implications These findings are recommended for consideration by tourism authorities, holiday destination managers and trip organizers when targeting UAE residents, both Emirati nationals and expats. Social implications As a relation between everyday activities and travel activities was confirmed, the typical tourism motivation assumption that people are traveling to escape the everyday should be reconsidered. In addition, a managerial conclusion is that Emirati nationals and expats should be considered as two distinct groups when devising, preparing and marketing the leisure activities for the market in the UAE. Originality/value The problem of separating tourism travel from everyday life, as the common perspective of the time, was to treat tourism simply as a temporary escape from everyday life. This research enters this same area and attempts to fill the academic gap and address this issue which, to our knowledge, no specific studies have investigated or exposed the relationship between common everyday leisure activities and special travel leisure activities.

Background/Aims Individuals with arthritis experience physiological impacts from the condition that affect their participation in everyday activities. The latest literature suggests a need for more in-depth exploration of how hand impairments impact participation in leisure activities. This qualitative study explores the lived experience of individuals with arthritis who participate in quilting and sewing as a leisure activity. Methods The Person-Environment-Occupation model provided a framework for this study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four individuals with arthritis. Participants interviewed in person also gave feedback on quilting tools. Results Environmental supports (from tools or social circles) and physiological changes from the arthritis impacted performance of and participation in quilting. The participants were already independently making modifications to maximise participation in quilting and sewing, even though none had consulted with health care professionals. Conclusions Knowledge of task analysis and ergonomics allows occupational therapists to support performance through collaboration with clients on modifications to support participation.

The article characterizes the essence of the concepts of “competence”, “speech competence”, “communicative and speech competence”. Separation of the essence of these concepts gave grounds to consider the terminological phrase “formation of communicative and speech competence of preschool age children” as a complex purposeful process of forming an individual integrative quality of the child’s personality, which is determined by the ability to use language correctly and unmistakably in everyday life, and takes place as a result of mastering language, extra lingual and intonation means of speech expression. The potential possibilities of using cartoons in forming preschool age children’s communicative and speech competence are analyzed. It is established that a cartoon is close to a child, arouses his interest, allows to qualitatively change the nature of social-communicative interaction. The criteria for selecting cartoons from the point of view of their suitability for use as a means of forming communicative and speech competence of preschool age children are determined, namely: emotional and speech saturation of the plot of the cartoon; correspondence of the cartoon texts structure to the possibilities of children’s perception and understanding, their correlation with children’s experience and past events; dynamism of a cartoon, sharpness and expressive development of the plot, exciting events for the child; brightness, originality, and individuality of the characters’ images – they are remembered; connection of the film with the real life situation of the child, his relationship with the environment; awakening the desire to imitate a positive hero, in particular his nobility and success. The stages of work on cartoons in the context of forming communicative and speech competence of preschool age children are identified: propaedeutic, viewing, reflexive.

The state policy of health preservation of Russians and the process of introducing a healthy lifestyle into their everyday life is hampered by the lack of sufficient self-activity and purposefulness of the individual ecological and valeological behavior of representatives of various population groups. According to the authors of the article, one of the important indicators of the maturity of professional and labor competencies of school and student youth is their readiness and desire for permanent self-preserving behavior. “With numbers in hand,” the authors show the scale of deviant deviations and the phenomena of spontaneous irresponsibility in the educational and leisure activities of students, hindering the preservation and development of physical culture, the accumulation and effective use of their psychophysiological and labor potential. The conclusions of the proposal of the authors of the article are based on the results of a number of sociological surveys conducted in 2000-2020. at the Institute of Economics of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in a number of secondary schools and universities of the Ural and Volga Federal Districts.

Since the middle of the 1980s French Canadian novelist Sylvain Trudel has constantly put his characters in contentious situations from which they try to escape by way of creating alternative worlds at the same time real and fantastical. This device takes the characters away from their trite everyday life and into a symbolic and mystical universe. The synthème seems to be fit into that symbolic frame. Through the child’s point of view – which seems then to become some sort of secret language – each object belonging to the realm of the profane becomes tinted with a sacred meaning. Synthème and symbol would then be considered as vehicles for the sacred, that which shows through Sylvain Trudel’s novels.
