This article explores the extent to which the regional higher education system (HES) influences the location of foreign research and development (R&D). To do so, we use a dataset with information on the location choices of new foreign R&D establishments within Spain from 2005 to 2013. Similarly, we use a multiple measure of the three university missions, distinguishing between research capacity training, scientific research, and technology transfer. We find that the probability of a foreign R&D establishment being located in a region is positively affected by the strength of the region’s HES missions, and more specifically by the quality of its scientific research, while its research training capacity and knowledge transfer activities do not seem to play a significant role. Moreover, the strength of the research mission has a positive influence on the location choice of foreign units conducting research activities but is weak to explain the location of those performing development activities. Abstract Background Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) suffers from a dearth of concrete information on the causes of women’s under-representation in scientific research workforce particularly at higher levels compared with the wealth of information that exists in the global north. The goal of this study was to illuminate familial and socio-cultural drivers that contribute to intersectional gender inequities in scientific career progression in SSA to inform strategies that could promote career equity for African scientific researchers. Methods This study was nested within the context of ‘Developing Excellence in Leadership, Training and Science in Africa’ (DELTAS Africa)—a health-based scientific research capacity strengthening initiative. It adopted an exploratory qualitative cross-sectional study design. In-depth interviews were conducted among 58 (32 Female and 26 Male) trainees/research fellows at various career stages, affiliated to three purposively selected African Research Consortia. The interviews were conducted between May and December 2018 in English. The data were analysed inductively based on emergent themes. Results The study participants were nationals of thirteen SSA countries. More female than male participants had young children. Four themes were identified. They illustrate women’s and men’s characterisation of the normative career pathway and progression requirements which calls for significant ‘time’ commitments (theme 1), and how social power relations of gender within the family and wider society shapes their participation in scientific research activities (theme 2). This culminates in researchers'' differential experiences of navigating between the ‘two different lives’—family and career, and the resultant implications for their career progression and personal well-being (theme 3). Women researchers made different and conscious trade-offs for navigating the ‘two different lives’ by utilising various metaphors such as the ‘biological clock and career clock’, the ‘glass ball and rubber ball’, and the concept of ‘sacrifice’ (theme 4). Conclusions This study is the first of its kind to demonstrate how intersectional gender analysis through use of qualitative research methods may provide novel insights into the hidden familial and socio-cultural drivers of gender inequitable scientific research career progression. It offers important policy and practice measures and approaches for fostering career equity for women and men scientists within research capacity strengthening initiatives in SSA.

The article discusses the issues of organizing design and educational research activities of students using tutoring. The relevance of this topic is due to the need for high-quality implementation of the Federal State Educational Standards of General Education, which formulate the task of forming and developing design and research skills of students. The authors propose criteria and tools for diagnosing the success of tutor support, tested in pedagogical practice, cite the results of diagnostics, testifying to the positive influence of tutor support on the formation of schoolchildren’s internal motives and a steady interest in design and research, on the improvement of students’ skills in choosing a topic and formulating a project and research problem, on an increase in the quality of finished works. The article was prepared on the basis of research materials carried out in 2018–2021 in Ulyanovsk Gymnasium No. 34.

With the move towards converged all-IP wireless network environments, managing end-user Quality of Experience (QoE) poses a challenging task, aimed at meeting high user expectations and requirements regarding reliable and cost-effective communication, access to any service, anytime and anywhere, and across multiple operator domains. In this paper, we give a survey of state-of-the-art research activities addressing the field of QoE management, focusing in particular on the domain of wireless networks and addressing three management aspects: QoE modeling, monitoring and measurement, and adaptation and optimization. Furthermore, we identify and discuss the key aspects and challenges that need to be considered when conducting research in this area.

Introduction: Continuing medical education (CME) is increasingly important for all practicing nurses to improve qualifications and skills. Objective: To describe the current situation of CME for internal nurses at Phu Tho Provincial General Hospital in the period 2020-2021. Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive design, combining qualitative and quantitative. Results: All nurses were able to participate in CME, but not all  were able to attend the whole CME course due to long courses, lack of time, lack of certificate, difficult techniques, no routine tasks, or specialized tasks or scientific research activities. The hospital staffs explained that due to the specific characteristics of the profession, it is difficult to arrange the time to attend the CME and the nurses can be mastered difficult techniques. Conclusion: It is necessary to arrange CME with short training time, suitable content according to majors, and to increase scientific research training activities in hospitals.

This study aims to look at the GAP between lecturers' perceptions and preferences related to research activities and publications. Question material related to Perception and Preference aspects. Before the workshop, a questionnaire was given to assess the Perception aspect, then after the workshop, respondents were again given the same question to assess the Preference aspect. The data is in the form of cross sectional and is processed using descriptive statistics and GAP analysis models. Before conducting research and publication workshops, lecturers' interests and perceptions were still very minimal. But after the activities of the Lecturer began to be interested and interested in researching and publicizing. As a suggestion, this activity should be carried out continuously and continued with assistance so that the developed interest can be implemented in real activities.

This study aims to examine graduate students’ academic experiences in conducting scientific research activities at graduate schools, which have been impacted by the use of information and communication technologies. They advance their experiences by taking courses, conducting research, assisting in the research of their advisors, and teaching through the adoption of digital technologies. The data were collected from graduate students who enrolled at five universities in metropolitan areas of South Korea. The results of the quantitative analysis in this study are based on the answers of 188 graduate students who responded via an online survey regarding their individual research activities and use of technology. Our results revealed that graduate students who engaged in research projects, courses involving research methods, and courses based on integrated technology use had significantly higher mean scores for the use of technology in scientific research activities.

Objective Resource allocation to research activities is challenging and there is limited evidence to justify decisions. Members of AO Spine were surveyed to understand the research practices and needs of spine surgeons worldwide. Methods An 84-item survey was distributed to the AO Spine community in September of 2020. Respondent demographics and insights regarding research registries, training and education, mentorship, grants and financial support, and future directions were collected. Responses were anonymous and compared among regions. Results A total of 333 spine surgeons representing all geographic regions responded; 52.3% were affiliated with an academic/university hospital, 91.0% conducted clinical research, and 60.9% had 5+ years of research experience. There was heterogeneity among research practices and needs across regions. North American respondents had more research experience ( P = .023), began conducting research early on ( P < .001), had an undergraduate science degree ( P < .001), and were more likely to have access to a research coordinator or support staff ( P = .042) compared to other regions. While all regions expressed having the same challenges in conducting research, Latin America, and Middle East/Northern Africa respondents were less encouraged to do research ( P < .001). Despite regional differences, there was global support for research registries and research training and education. Conclusion To advance spine care worldwide, spine societies should establish guidelines, conduct studies on pain management, and support predictive analytic modeling. Tailoring local/regional programs according to regional needs is advised. These results can assist spine societies in developing long-term research strategies and provide justified rationale to governments and funding agencies.
