Abstract Background Canine elbow dysplasia (CED) is a complex developmental skeletal disorder associated with a number of pathological conditions within the cubital joint. Because CED is a heritable disease, it is important to identify and remove the affected animals from breeding. The first objective of this study was to describe the prevalence of medial coronoid process disease (MCPD) without (MCD) or with (FMCP) fragmented medial coronoid process, osteochondrosis (OC) and/or osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), ununited anconeal process (UAP), radio-ulnar incongruence (INC R-U) and humero-ulnar incongruence (INC H-U) in dogs with the use of CT imaging. The second aim was to determine the influence of demographics on the prevalence of investigated pathologies in dogs with clinical evidence of elbow dysplasia. Results In this retrospective study, CT data records of 169 dogs of different breeds presented to the small animal veterinary clinic from 2012 to 2018 were included. 69.23% of dogs diagnosed with CED were young (≤ 2 years old). The mean age of dogs presented with INC R-U was 1.68 ± 1.82 years, while in dogs without INC R-U the mean age was 2.64 ± 2.59 years. The mean age of dogs with INC H-U was 1.94 ± 2.06 years, while without INC H-U 3.29 ± 2.09 years. Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherd and Bernese Mountain dogs were most frequently presented with CED-associated lameness. In 122 dogs OA of varying severity was found. Conclusion INC H-U, FMCP and MCD were among the most frequently found components of CED found in the present study. OCD and UAP were the least frequently diagnosed. Dogs presented with INC R-U and INC H-U were significantly younger than dogs without these CED components. Boxers, Dog de Bordeaux, American Staffordshire terriers and mixed-breed dogs were diagnosed later in life than the other breeds. OA of varying severity was found in 72.18% of dogs. Males accounted for more than 75% of the study population.

OBJECTIVE This study investigated the benefit of prophylactic vertebroplasty of the adjacent vertebrae in single-segment osteoporotic vertebral body fractures treated with kyphoplasty. METHODS All patients treated with kyphoplasty for osteoporotic single-segment fractures between January 2007 and August 2012 were included in this retrospective study. The patients received either kyphoplasty alone (kyphoplasty group) or kyphoplasty with additional vertebroplasty of the adjacent segment (vertebroplasty group). The segmental kyphosis with the rate of adjacent-segment fractures (ASFs) and remote fractures were studied on plain lateral radiographs preoperatively, postoperatively, at 3 months, and at final follow-up. RESULTS Thirty-seven (82%) of a possible 45 patients were included for the analysis, with a mean follow-up of 16 months (range 3–54 months). The study population included 31 women, and the mean age of the total patient population was 72 years old (range 53–86 years). In 21 patients (57%), the fracture was in the thoracolumbar junction. Eighteen patients were treated with additional vertebroplasty and 19 with kyphoplasty only. The segmental kyphosis increased in both groups at final follow-up. A fracture through the primary treated vertebra (kyphoplasty) was found in 4 (22%) of the vertebroplasty group and in 3 (16%) of the kyphoplasty group (p = 0.6). An ASF was found in 50% (n = 9) of the vertebroplasty group and in 16% (n = 3) of the kyphoplasty group (p = 0.03). Remote fractures occurred in 1 patient in each group (p = 1.0). CONCLUSIONS Prophylactic vertebroplasty of the adjacent vertebra in patients with single-segment osteoporotic fractures as performed in this study did not decrease the rate of adjacent fractures. Based on these retrospective data, the possible benefits of prophylactic vertebroplasty do not compensate for the possible risks of an additional cement augmentation.

The electrocardiography (ECG) QT interval is influenced by fluctuations in heart rate (HR) what may lead to misinterpretation of its length. Considering that alterations in QT interval length reflect abnormalities of the ventricular repolarisation which predispose to occurrence of arrhythmias, this variable must be properly evaluated. The aim of this work is to determine which method of correcting the QT interval is the most appropriate for dogs regarding different ranges of normal HR (different breeds). Healthy adult dogs (n=130; German Shepherd, Boxer, Pit Bull Terrier, and Poodle) were submitted to ECG examination and QT intervals were determined in triplicates from the bipolar limb II lead and corrected for the effects of HR through the application of three published formulae involving quadratic, cubic or linear regression. The mean corrected QT values (QTc) obtained using the diverse formulae were significantly different (ρ<0.05), while those derived according to the equation QTcV = QT + 0.087(1- RR) were the most consistent (linear regression). QTcV values were strongly correlated (r=0.83) with the QT interval and showed a coefficient of variation of 8.37% and a 95% confidence interval of 0.22-0.23 s. Owing to its simplicity and reliability, the QTcV was considered the most appropriate to be used for the correction of QT interval in dogs.

Objectives: To assess the myringoplasty graft take rate, comparing two methods of post-operative ear packing: bismuth iodoform paraffin paste (BIPP) gauze versus tri-adcortyl ointment (TAO).Methods: A retrospective study of patients who had undergone myringoplasty at our department within a three-year period was undertaken. Data, including age, site and size of perforation, grade of surgeon, surgical approach, use of post-operative ear dressings, complications, and audiometric outcome, were collected from the patient notes and analysed. The overall success rate of the operation (with success being defined as an intact tympanic membrane at six months) was noted. Results: One hundred and seventy myringoplasties were performed over the study period, but data were complete on 154 patients and these constituted the study population. Age ranged from nine to 71 years (mean age 34 years) and the mean follow-up period was seven months. Consultants performed 62 per cent of the operations, with an 85 per cent success rate, whereas trainees performed the remaining 38 per cent, with a success rate of 73 per cent (p=0.059). The overall success rate was 80 per cent; 79 per cent for BIPP and 83 per cent for TAO (p=0.55), and 87 per cent for small perforations and 75 per cent for subtotal perforations (p=0.22). There was audiometric improvement in 74 per cent of cases. Conclusion: We found no significant difference in outcome between patients packed with TAO and BIPP. Packing with TAO is therefore a suitable alternative to BIPP gauze ear dressing following myringoplasty.

Background Whether concomitant cholecystectomy is needed during laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) in patients with asymptomatic cholelithiasis is controversial. In this study, our aim is to show the follow-up results in patients with asymptomatic cholelithiasis who underwent LSG alone. Methods Patients undergoing primary LSG between March 2018 and September 2020 with asymptomatic gallbladder stones were included in this retrospective study. All patients underwent abdominal ultrasound (US) before surgery. Patients’ demographics and postoperative outcomes were recorded. Results A total of 180 patients underwent primary LSG and completed the 1-year follow-up. The study population consisted of 42 patients (23%) with asymptomatic cholelithiasis. The mean age was 41.1±7.1 years (31-56, 63% female), and mean body mass index (BMI) was 44 ± 6.7 kg/m2. Average BMI decreased to 31.1 ± 4.7 kg/m2 at 6 months and to 27.3 ± 3.6 kg/m2 at 1 year. The average follow-up period was 17 ± 5.7 months (range, 12-28 months). Of the 42 patients, only 1 patient (2.4%) became symptomatic during the follow-up period. Discussion We do not recommend cholecystectomy in patients with asymptomatic gallstones during the same session with LSG. An observational approach should be adopted for these patients.

Abstract Background: The primary aim of the retrospective study was to study whether the number of births in women ( primipara, multipara and grand multipara women ) the long term after deliveries has an impact on the development of Carpal tunnel syndrome ( CTS ).Methods: Our study population is composed of patients who are referred with suspicion of CTS. Four hundred and fifty female patients ( 150 primara, 150 multipara and 150 grand multipara women ) referred to the electrophsiology laboratory with clinical suspicion CTS were included into the descriptive and retrospective study between November 2016 and June 2018. Primiparity, multiparity and grand multiparity were defined as women having 1, 2 – 5 and 6 - 9 deliveries, respectively. Patients who passed 2 years after their last birth were included in the study. All of the patients were assessed and compared in terms of electrophysiological CTS presence and degree of CTS. Also BMI was calculated for each patient and it compared among groups. Results: The disease has not been changed with the number of births ( p > 0.05 ). The mean BMI of the primipara, multipara and grand multipara women were 28,06 ± 1,12 kg / m2, 27,59 ± 3,72 kg / m2 and 27,82 ± 3,11 kg / m2, respectively. There was no significant statistically difference in BMI among groups ( p > 0.05). However, the severity of the disease varies according to BMI ( p < 0.05 ). It was calculated that as the BMI increases, the severity of the disease increases. Conclusions: Number of pregnancies in women ( primipara, multipara and grand multipara women ) concerning the long term after deliveries has not impact on the development of CTS. Other risk factors such as BMI may play a significant role in the development of CTS in these patients.

Objectives The aim of this multicentre retrospective study was to review the clinical data, outcomes and histopathological features of cats that had been treated for ocular surface dermoids. Methods Thirteen cats from various private practices in France with a clinical diagnosis of ocular surface dermoid were included in the study. Results The mean age of the study population at the time of diagnosis was 5 months. There were nine males and four females. Three different breeds were, including: domestic shorthair (n = 7), Birman (n = 4) and Havana Brown (n = 2). Two of the four Birmans were related (same sire). The two Havana Browns were also related (same sire). All of the dermoids were unilateral. Five of the dermoids were strictly conjunctival. Four affected both the conjunctiva and the cornea. Three affected both the conjunctiva and the eyelid, and one was strictly corneal. They were located in various positions: temporal (n = 9), inferonasal (n = 1), dorsonasal (n = 1) and dorsotemporal (n = 1). The last dermoid was heterogeneous and involved the nasal, dorsal and temporal quadrants. Concurrent eye diseases were observed in five patients: four cats exhibited associated eyelid agenesis and one cat exhibited persistent iris-to-iris pupillary membranes. Ten dermoids were surgically excised with no recurrences. Surgery was not performed for three cats: one cat died a few days after diagnosis and two cats were lost to follow-up after initial presentation. Conclusions and relevance Ocular surface dermoids are a rare condition in cats that can be treated successfully by surgical excision. Although our study reports only a small number of cases, the observation of ocular surface dermoids in two related cats in two different breeds indicates that genetic transmission is likely.

Extraskeletal osteosarcomas (EOSs) are rare tumors that arise in various soft-tissue sites (e.g., gastrointestinal tract, subcutaneous tissue, spleen, liver, skin, kidney, urinary bladder, muscle, thyroid gland, eye, and mammary glands). Soft-tissue osteosarcomas (STOs) occur in older dogs with no sex predilection; beagles and rottweilers are at higher risk. Mammary gland osteosarcomas (MGOs) occur in older females; mixed-breed dogs, German shepherd dogs, and miniature poodles are at higher risk. The median survival time for cases with STO was 26 days, and the major cause of death was local recurrence (92%). The median survival time for cases with MGO was 90 days, and the major cause of death was pulmonary metastasis (62.5%).

Abstract Purpose: To describe a new phacoemulsification technique without hydro-procedures in patients of posterior polar cataract (PPC) and determine the posterior capsular rate (PCR) and postoperative outcomes. Methods: After capsulorhexis, we insert the phacoemulsification probe inside the eye and shave the cortex and epinucleus within the capsulorhexis area. Then the phaco probe is buried deep into the center, and an anteroposterior crack is fashioned. Then the probe is placed at 7’ o clock to chop away a triangular piece of the nucleus. A similar maneuver is done at a 4' o clock position to take out another piece. The phacoemulsification tip and the chopper are now positioned at the cracked site of the lower fragments. Using the 2 instruments, the fragments are now pushed away and easily emulsified. Results: We conducted a retrospective study with 115 eyes of 77 patients. The mean age of the study population was 51.87 + 14.19 years (range 22-87 years). Out of 77 patients, 39 (50.64%) patients had unilateral PPC, and 38 (49.35%) had bilateral PPC. PCR occurred in 9 eyes (7.82%). Two patients had fragment drop, and only 1 (0.87%) patient was left aphakic. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at postoperative day 30 was 20/20 or better in 102 (88.69%) eyes, 20/32-20/80 was in 11(9.56%) eyes, and BCVA 20/80-20/200 was in 2 (1.73%) eyes. Conclusion: Phacoemulsification without hydro-procedure is a novel technique that can be successfully implemented in PPC cases and expect an excellent visual outcome.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to calculate the collapsibility index (CI) in a group of 15 healthy adult mixed breed cats via right hepatic intercostal ultrasound view. The minimal and the maximal diameters of the caudal vena cava (CVC) were obtained during inspiration and expiration, respectively, then CI was calculated. The mean diameter of the CVC was 0.5cm. The mean CI was 28±3% and CI was not significantly associated with gender. As in human medicine, there is a growing need for less invasive monitoring in small animal practice. The CI enables the assessment of estimated volemia without the need for a central venous catheter. This is the first reported study investigating CI in cats.

Data relating to reproductive parameters of German shepherd bitches were collected from registered German shepherd dog (GSD) breeders with information kept over a 15-year period (1982-1997). The information obtained was verified using the East African Kennel Club records. A total of 594 bitches from 280 breeders were recorded. From these, 798 heats were observed, 594 of which were used for breeding, resulting in 3592 puppies. The mean age at puberty was 519.0 ± 41 days. Heats occurred throughout the year, although significantly (P < 0.05) higher and lower incidences were observed in October and April respectively. Pregnancy significantly (P < 0.01) increased interoestrous interval, which was 247.8 ± 99.6 and 183 ± 52 days among bred/pregnant and non-bred bitches respectively. Most bitches in oestrus (73.7 %) were bred, and breeding was carried out throughout the year, with a distribution closely related to that of heat incidence. Subsequently, whelping occurred throughout the year, and 95.5 %of the bitches that were mated whelped. A mean gestation period of 60.6 ± 5.1 days was observed. The mean litter size was 6.4 ± 0.4 puppies, and did not differ significantly between months. The preweaning losses were low, with 2.3 % stillbirths, 0.9 % culls and 11.4 % mortalities.
