(Not) Just for the Fun of It: The Labor of Social Media Production

This chapter exposes the deep cracks in narratives of social media leisure and amateurism. It looks at how forms of value-generating, gendered self-expression are rife in the social media world through blogs, vlogs, Instagram, and more. Though these activities are superficially framed as amusement and sociality, this chapter contends that many young women do not produce and promote content just for the fun of it. Rather, they approach social media creation with strategy, purpose, and aspirations of career success. Hence, this chapter explores some of the most salient conditions and features of aspirational labor: narratives of creative expression, relationship-building in online and offline contexts, and modes of individualized self-expression that both reveal and conceal normative feminine consumer behavior.

Both broadband society and cloud journalism strengthen the use of social networks in order to achieve engagement between the brand and the end user. The various productive sectors try to optimize their online marketing strategies in networks in order to reach most of their potential audience. Such is the case of telecommunications sector, which is inherently linked with communication. With the aim of discovering social media influence on consumer behavior, in this quantitative research we analyze the use of social networks Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Instagram by Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi and BQ as the axis of promotion of their products, increase of web traffic, improvement of the image of the company or the brand and obtaining brand notoriety. Bearing in mind that the mobile telephony sector is particularly competitive in Spain, it is concluded that the activity of mobile phone manufacturers in social media is positive, and, regarding consumer behavior, that no significant difference is detected between the average of ratings of the advertising of mobile telephony in the social networks, neither in the influence of the same by gender nor by age ranges.

As social media use continues to rise, studies have linked high social media use with rising levels of depression, particularly in young adults. This narrative has pervaded, yet in the research thus far, there is no general consensus as to causation or direction. What remains constant is that when mediators such as 'comparison' and 'envy' are introduced between social media use and depression, there is a negative correlation. In a qualitative study, I examine the connection between social comparison, Instagram use, and envy in young women. I conducted semi-structured interviews with a group of 10 female university students between the ages of 18-24. Interviews were analysed through qualitative descriptive analysis. Overwhelmingly, subjects engaged in frequent social comparison offline, which translated to frequent social comparison, made worse, on Instagram. As a result, participants admitted to feeling envious as well as other feelings like frustration, loneliness, anger, and overwhelm. However, users also reported positive experiences such as inspiration, humour, motivation, and happiness, when they are on Instagram. Offline affect proved to be the biggest moderators and indicators of comparison and the positive or negative experiences of the participants. This research may suggest future care in this area should focus on offline affect rather than the social networks themselves.

As marketing activities have been realized through social media platforms in recent years, it has also made it possible to examine the social media platforms and consumers as users. Influencer Marketing is an increasingly popular method of influencing consumers in social media with the help of influencers. It is important for businesses to send their messages about their brand or products to consumers and affect them. Consumers' evaluation of these messages is realized through their perceptions. The analysis of consumer perceptions in terms of demographic features in social media is also the focus of this study.

Pandemic like COVID-19 has triggered disruptions in personal and collective lives globally. It is not only a pandemic, but also an Infodemic of misinformation about the virus which raises demand for reliable and trustworthy information. With the advent of social media creation and consumption of news have been changing among the young generation. Student leaders have taken on additional work and assumed new responsibilities by volunteering in their communities and creating awareness among the public about the accuracy of information and measures to be taken against the deadly virus. This study explores the use of Facebook handles by the student leaders of two universities in Guwahati in creating awareness about the health-related messages regarding Covid-19 and its vaccination. The researcher will use critical discourse analysis to evaluate the use of social networking sites by the students’ leaders. To understand the usage by the leaders, Facebook pages of the leaders would be followed and studied backed with unstructured interviews with the leaders to understand the purpose of and pattern of using the social media handles.

Conventional ‘normative’ theories of public relations have often centred on relationship building, dialogic theory and two-way communication. Despite these theories dominating much of the academic literature, practitioners continue to seek control in relationships to produce ‘value outcomes’ and meet measurable objectives for the organisations they work for. Public relations workers’ ability to influence the influencers has been framed as relationship development, and payment for editorial content or other influence has been seen as unethical. With the rise of social media, the so-called ‘new’ influencers are now bloggers and Instagrammers. Given that most social media influencers now wish to be compensated with payment or in-kind for any work related to brands, this article discusses the implications for ethical practice and public relations theory. The mask of relationship building in the social media age needs to be removed and the importance of payment to bloggers needs to be acknowledged for the theories of public relations to develop.

This study combines data analysis with multilevel processing of visual communication to classify the visual frames of state-sponsored social media propaganda. We relied on Twitter’s Election Integrity data to sample five propaganda targets of the Internet Research Agency, including Russian and American partisan groups, and explored how their operations deviated from canonical state propaganda marked by symbols of national identity and heroic masculinity. The results show that the visual frames employed by the Internet Research Agency are designed to embody the vox populi with relatable, familiar, or attractive faces of ordinary people. The results also indicate that Internet Research Agency influence operations displayed cultural acuity and familiarity with the social identity of their targets, and that the visual narrative the agency crafted trafficked primarily in the tropes of regular guys or attractive young women. We discuss these findings and argue that state-sponsored propaganda has attuned to subcultural and visual affordances of social platforms.

AbstractSocial media is popular in our society right now. People are using social media platforms to purchase various products. We collected the data from various social media platforms. We analyzed the data for prediction of the consumer behavior on the social media platform. We considered the consumer data from Facebook, Twitter, Linked In and YouTube, Instagram, and Pinterest, etc. There are diverse and high-speed, high volume data which are coming from social media platform, so we used predictive big data analytics. In this paper, we have used the concept of big data technology to process data and analyze it to predict consumer behavior on social media. We have analyzed consumer behavior on social media platforms based on some parameters and criteria. We analyzed the consumer perception, attitude towards the social media platform. To get good quality of result, we pre-process data using various data pre-processing to detect outlier, noises, error, and duplicate record. We developed mathematical modeling using machine learning to predict consumer behavior on the social media platform. This model is a predictive model for predicting consumer behavior on the social media platform. 80% of data are used for training purposes and 20% for testing.
