When the road tunnel is excavated, the multi lining is used to being applied. In order to keep the surrounding rock stabilize and arouse the self-stability of the surrounding rock, building the first support is essential. But the slabbing often occurs near the spring line on the surface of the first lining, and because the slabbling is a common failing and not attracted our most attentions, it will develop to the crack and threaten the stability of the structure finally. This paper uses the line elastic method to analyze the mechanics that causes this slabbing phenomenon via the interaction between the surrounding rock and the first lining, and suggests the measure that escape the slabbing.

Axial fans play a pivotal role in the road tunnel ventilation system. Qualified performance of the axial fan is important for both safety and air quality maintenance reasons. Axial fans performance in situ test of Qinling Zhongnan Mountain highway tunnel, the second longest road tunnel in the world, is presented in this research. Performance test items and the qualification criterion, as well as a general framework for the road tunnel axial fan assessment, are recommended. Log-Tchebycheff method is suggested to confirm the location for the measuring lines and points. The precision of the log-Tchebycheff method in air flow rate measuring is verified by comparing with the biharmonic spline interpolation fitting result. The research shows that the log-Tchebycheff method has high precision and good efficiency in the air flow rate measurement of the road tunnel air duct. What is more, the biharmonic spline interpolation fitting method can be applied to obtain a more accurate result. The number of interpolation points of the biharmonic spline interpolation fitting method should be bigger than 2000 to provide quality results.

In order to insure the safe and reliable road-tunnel composite structure, it is important to consider the influence of different foundation treatment ways on the differential settlement of the composite structure. Based on the nonlinear FEM, connecting with the western corridor connecting project from Shenzhen to Hong Kong in China, a numerical model has been established to estimate the settlement of the road- tunnel composite structure under three different foundation treatment ways, such as pressure grouting, PHC piles (prestressed high-strength concrete piles) and foundation in natural state. This study shows that the influence of the different foundation treatment ways on the transverse and longitudinal differential settlement of the composite structure of road-tunnel is strong. The results from this study provide a useful guideline for settlement control of other similar projects composed of tunnel and road structure.

With continued economic development, movement and logistics to various parts of the country are increasing. Consequently, long tunnels in the mountains and the large city underground road tunnels under construction have become increasingly important. Further, the escalating number of road tunnels has resulted in the deepening of tunnels and an increase in the number of long tunnels. Because it is highly possible fora traffic accident inside a tunnel to cause further accidents, various safety improvement measures should be prepared. To resolve the problem, dualizing the emergency power of CCTVs (which perform the major functions of tunnel safety) is proposed for application in a plan to improve safety. This plan improves safety control inside the tunnel and contributes to its maintenance. This study was prompted by the expressway tunnel accidents that occurred in the Central Region Expressway in October 2015 and February 2016. The safety security system based on the dualization of the emergency power inside the road tunnel is being monitored, with its application in some tunnels as the pilot project of an actual lab concept. Moreover, measures on safety control inside the road tunnel can be prepared through the monitoring.

This paper presents the results of hot smoke tests, conducted in a real road tunnel. The tunnel is located within the expressway S69 in southern Poland between cities Żywiec and Zwardoń. Its common name is Laliki tunnel. It is a bi-directional non-urban tunnel. The length of the tunnel is 678 m and it is inclined by 4%. It is equipped with the longitudinal ventilation system. Two hot smoke tests have been carried out according to Australian Standard AS 4391-1999. Hot smoke tests corresponded to a HRR (Heat Release Rate) equal to respectively 750 kW and 1500 kW. The fire source was located in the middle of the road lane imitating an initial phase of a car fire (respectively 150 m and 265 m from S portal). The temperature distribution was recorded during both tests using a set of fourteen thermocouples mounted at two stand poles located at the main axis of the tunnel on windward. The stand poles were placed at distances of 5 m and 10 m. The recorded data were applied to validate of a numerical model built and solved using Ansys Fluent. The calculated temperature distribution matched the measured values.

The authors demonstrate how expert knowledge about the construction and operation phases combined with monitoring data can be utilized for the diagnosis and management of risks typical to large civil engineering projects. The methodology chosen for estimating the probabilities of risk elements is known as Bayesian Belief Networks (BBN). Using a BBN model one can keep on updating the risk event probabilities as the new evidence (monitoring information) becomes available. Furthermore, the updated probabilities estimated using the available data for the construction phase serve as background information for the subsequent phase. The integrated two-object model of construction-operation may be then used to optimize the decision making, thus minimizing the risks. To better show how the proposed approach works the authors use the example of the road tunnel constructed and operated under the Dead Vistula River in Gdansk.

The damage of the road tunnel during tunnel ventilation tests is prevented by using specific testing aerosol representing fire smoke. This study compares optical density profiles of aerosol and fire smoke using the well-known FDS simulation system, testing the suitability of aerosol to represent fire smoke realistically. The movement of aerosol and fire smoke downstream of the aerosol/fire source is investigated for a case of a 240 m long section of a road tunnel. Similarity of optical density profile for both cases under given conditions is confirmed. The influence of mesh resolution and the way of computational domain decomposition is evaluated as well. In case of fire smoke, the influence of domain decomposition and mesh resolution is very slight, while in case of aerosol it is more pronounced due to effect of relatively course numerical grid. The results support the hypothesis that the aerosol is suitable to represent the fire smoke for steady-state conditions occurring downstream of the fire in tunnel ventilation tests.
