ABSTRACT Mangrove crab (Scylla serrata) and swimming crab (Portunus pelagicus) are economically important marine commodities produced from the coastal waters of Sangihe Islands Regency. But those marine commodity products are usually only caught accidentally with a bottom gill net. There has been a special trap fishing gear for that resources, but not known well by local fishermen. Addition of squid oil extraction baits could increase the fishing power of mangrove crab and swimming crab traps. This research aims to study the effect of squid oil extract on traps bait to catch mangrove crab and swimming crab; and identify the types of biota captured. This research was done in coastal waters of Malise village, Tabukan Tengah District of Sangihe Islands Regency for 2 weeks September 2015; based on experimental method. Six unit traps were operated ten trips where three units of them used scad mackerel bait that injected with squid oil extract, and tree other units just used scad mackerel bait without extract; and the capture data were analyzed using t test. The catch was 142 individuals (135 mangrove crabs and 7 swimming crab); where 86 crabs was caught by scad mackerel bait with squid oil extract, and 56 crabs caught with bait without squid oil extract. The analysis showed that the use of squid oil extracts on trap baits increased the catch. Keywords: mangrove crab, swimming crab, trap baits, squid oil extract, Sangihe   ABSTRAK[1] Kepiting bakau (Scylla serrata) dan rajungan (Portunus pelagicus) merupakan komoditi hasil laut ekonomis penting yang dihasilkan dari perairan pantai Kabupaten Kepulauan Sangihe. Kata-kata kunci: kepiting bakau, rajungan, umpan bubu, ekstrak minyak cumi, Sangihe

The purpose of this study was to determine the yield and type of catch, the comparison of the number of catches and the efforts to manage electronic FADs on Gill Net fishing gear. This research was conducted in Bulukumba waters from February to March 2017. Data collection was carried out by direct observation of fishermen in Bulukumba waters. The samples used in this study were FADs installed by fishermen in the waters of Bulukumba as many as 20 locations. Based on the research results, fish catches with electronic FADs ranged from 98 to 131 fish per fishing trip with a total catch of 2,324 fish. Meanwhile, the usual FAD catches ranged from 51 to 84 fish per fishing trip with a total catch of 1,313 fish and the highest type of fish was selar, followed by male mackerel, Selar bentong, white Kuwe, Layang, Barracuda, selangat and Mata goyang. The ratio between the catch and the use of electronic FADs was 64%, while the regular FADs were 36%. Considering that FADs are an effective tool in collecting fish, a sustainable management strategy is needed, including by (1) community based management, (2) limiting fishing efforts, (3) stopping the addition of shallow marine FADs. , (4) use of fishing gear with large mesh sizes and (5) prioritize the use of deep sea FADs.

The incidental capture of sharks in the bottom-set gill-net fishery off the south coast of Ireland was quantified by placing observers on commercial gill-netters for the duration of a fishing trip. Forty fishing trips were sampled resulting in 1,167 km and 19,760 km h of observed fishing effort. Sixty individual sharks of seven species were reported entangled in the fishing gear. Tope, porbeagle and six-gilled sharks were the most frequently caught species, with black-mouthed dogfish, blue shark, basking shark and starry smooth hound also recorded. Total fishing effort along the south coast was calculated and total capture extrapolated from observed catch rates. An estimated 6,000 sharks were caught in this fishery during the study period.

Marine resources are valuable assets to be protected from illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and overfishing. IUU and overfishing detections require the identification of fishing gears for the fishing ships in operation. This paper is concerned with automatically identifying fishing gears from AIS (automatic identification system)-based trajectory data of fishing ships. It proposes a deep learning-based fishing gear-type identification method in which the six fishing gear type groups are identified from AIS-based ship movement data and environmental data. The proposed method conducts preprocessing to handle different lengths of messaging intervals, missing messages, and contaminated messages for the trajectory data. For capturing complicated dynamic patterns in trajectories of fishing gear types, a sliding window-based data slicing method is used to generate the training data set. The proposed method uses a CNN (convolutional neural network)-based deep neural network model which consists of the feature extraction module and the prediction module. The feature extraction module contains two CNN submodules followed by a fully connected network. The prediction module is a fully connected network which suggests a putative fishing gear type for the features extracted by the feature extraction module from input trajectory data. The proposed CNN-based model has been trained and tested with a real trajectory data set of 1380 fishing ships collected over a year. A new performance index, DPI (total performance of the day-wise performance index) is proposed to compare the performance of gear type identification techniques. To compare the performance of the proposed model, SVM (support vector machine)-based models have been also developed. In the experiments, the trained CNN-based model showed 0.963 DPI, while the SVM models showed 0.814 DPI on average for the 24-h window. The high value of the DPI index indicates that the trained model is good at identifying the types of fishing gears.

Studies were conducted on catch assessment of some artisanal marine fishing gears operated in Cox’s Bazar and Teknaf areas from April 2014 to April 2015. Sixteen types of fishing gears were identified, of which gill net, beach seine net, estuarine set bag net, marine set bag net and trammel net occupy major fishing activities. Although estuarine set bag net (ESBN) is a legally restricted fishing gear recorded the highest catch per unit effort (CPUE) (110 kg/gear/day) in July followed by marine set bag net (MSBN) (105 kg/gear/day) in Cox’s Bazar and the highest CPUE was recorded 100 kg/gear/day by ESBN in June followed by MSBN (90 kg/gear/day) in Teknaf. Out of 52 species of fishes, the major fish species abundantly caught by these gears were Poa (Otolithoides argenteus), Churi (Trichiurus haumela), Loittya (Harpadon nehereus), Ranga choukha (Lutjanus johni), Lal poa (Johnius argentatus), Olua (Coilia dussumieri), Rup chanda (Stromateus chinensis), (Stromateus argenteus) and Ilish (Tenualosa ilisha). Besides these fish species, 10 commercially important shrimp species and 3 important crab species were also recorded during the study period. The peak season of availability of most fish species was June and July while lean season was December and January. This study indicated that Otolithoides argenteus) was the dominant fish species followed by Trichiurus haumela, Harpadon nehereus and Coilia dussumieri.Progressive Agriculture 27 (2): 228-234, 2016

Terubok (Tenualosa macrura Bleeker, 1852) is an important fish commodity in Bengkalis, Riau Province. The terubok resosurce in Bengkalis is heavily degraded due to the high exploitation even fishing limitation was applied in term of species conservation. Conservation efforts through fishculture are constrained by the availability of live terobuk fish as both parent and adult fish. This paper present the results of fishing trial of double-net fishing gear for catching alive terubok fish. Fishing trial was conducted in 2015-2016 periods in Bengkalis strait waters and its adjascent. The results shown that the dominant fish catches of doublé net were Shorthead hairfin anchovy (Setipinna breviceps) and bombay duck (Harpodon sp). Double gill net catch rate for terubok were between 0,7 -2,6 fish/setting. Number of alive terubok fish was 27,1% of total terubok catches, length of first capture (Lc) value of terubok by using doublé net was 17.4 cm FL.
