ABSTRACT: Annatto (Bixa orellana L.) is an arboreal species domesticated in Amazonia from its wild ancestor (B. orellana var. urucurana). Bixin extracted from its orthodox seeds is a natural dye widely used in the food industry. This study evaluated methods to overcome seed dormancy and determine the germination potential, comparing domesticated and wild annatto populations. Seeds from two domesticated-type populations and two families of a wild-type population, stored for two years after field collection, were submitted to five treatments to overcome dormancy: T1 - control; T2 - mechanical scarification (with sandpaper); T3 - mechanical scarification (with sandpaper) + immersion in water at 36 ºC overnight (12 hours); T4 - immersion in water at room temperature (23 ºC, on average) for 24 h; T5 - immersion in concentrated sulfuric acid (95 - 98%) for 15 min + running water for 3 min. Highly significant differences (P < 0.001) were observed in the germination percentage of annatto seeds between wild and domesticated types, and among the treatments tested. Domesticated types showed higher germination percentage (10 - 58%) over all treatments when compared to the wild type (0 - 44%). The best treatments were those performed with mechanical scarification. Given the simplicity, we concluded that mechanical scarification with sandpaper is a good alternative to overcome dormancy of annatto seeds.

Under the conditions of modernization of Russian thermal power plants (TPP), water treatment plants based on imported membrane technologies are often put into operation without consideration of the quality of the source (natural) water and variable-performance operating modes. At the same time long-running water treatment plants and their capabilities are not considered. In this regard, the cost of additional water is three or more times higher, and the average output is respectively lower than at traditional water treatment plants. Often, one doesn’t take the advantages of reverse osmosis installations based on the rejection of the use of aggressive reagents such as sulfuric acid, etc. The aim of the study is to increase the efficiency of desalinated water production. It is especially important to conduct studies of natural waters with high content of iron-organic compounds characteristic of the regions of the center and north of Russia. The authors have carried out laboratory studies of various, primarily new filter materials, regents, and devices, both at the stages of pre-purification of water i.e., clarification, and at the stages of demineralization of clarified water. Water treatment plants of Ivanovo combined-cycle plant (CCP) and Cherepovets state district power station (GRES) are considered as the subject of the research. It is found out that if one applies ion-exchange and membrane water treatment technologies to treat water with high content of iron-organic compounds, high-quality desalinated water can be obtained. The properties of water are the following: specific electrical conductivity of no more than 0,2 mcm/cm and permanganate oxidizability of no more than 1 MgO/l. Results of studies at the Ivanovo CCP and Cherepovets GRES have shown practicability to coagulate water with aluminum sulfate using an anionactive flocculant, for example, during the flood period. Application of coagulation and ultrafiltration units before reverse osmosis installation ensures removing organic impurities from the water. Based on the obtained research results, recommendations are given for the implementation of the results at Ivanovo water treatment plants.

The health effects of infectious diseases affecting school-aged children continue to be a source of concern in the majority of low- and middle-income nations, owing to poor personal hygiene habits and insufficient sanitary facilities in public primary schools. Schoolchildren and primary school pupils are at increased risk due to a lack of attention to a fundamental yet crucial aspect of personal hygiene, such as continually washing hands with soap under running water, and even due to a lack of information of correct hand washing with soap practice. In recent years, public health concerns about communicable diseases such as respiratory infection and pneumonia have increased. The majority of school students are more exposed to infectious risk factors as a result of their frequent engagement in unhealthy behaviors. The purpose of this study is to determine the handwashing habits of Saudi Arabian secondary school students. The study employed a cross-sectional design in which an online survey was used to assess handwashing habits. Boys and girls from Saudi Arabia's secondary schools were included in the population. Statistical software was used to synthesize and analyze the data collected. The findings indicate that there was a relatively high level of commitment to hand washing. Additionally, findings indicated that the primary reason for skipping hand washing was a lack of recall. When it comes to handwashing materials in schools, the majority of participants prefer water and soap. The study discovered that the majority of secondary school students are unaware of the dangers associated with improper handwashing. Regression analysis revealed that there are significant predictors of handwashing commitment. Factors influencing secondary school students' handwashing habits include their region, academic year, gender, age, and parent's education. Thus, hygiene education programs in schools and communities should be implemented to raise awareness about the importance of hand hygiene.

It is well know that recirculating open cooling water system at metal/ water surface contact appear frequent corrosion products, like scales, foaling and material losses which are have great effect on cooling process. Passivation helps to maintain clean heat transfer surface by inhibiting oxides scales through creating outer passive layer. Passivators are substances which usually have a sufficiently high equilibrium potential and sufficiently low over potential decrease corrosion rate on attainment of passivity. One of the most popular passivator is organic phosphate Phosphinosuccinic oligomer C15H14O4P component (PSO) The study of passivation of carbon steel pipe line in recirculating open cooling water system was the aim of this present work. Maximum efficiency of passivator was determined and surface morphology were investigated using optical, scanning microscopy, phase analysis of the formed protective layer was exam by XRD and EDX. Corrosion in running water with and without PSO at 2 m3/hr flow rate was investigated using corrosion coupon rack. It was found that 200 ppm (PSO) decreases corrosion rate of carbon steel pipe in 3.5% NaCL solution from 23 to 7 mpy in stagnate water corrosion testing, while in running water in 3.5% NaCL solution it decreases from 45 to 18 mpy. XDR showed that the protective layer due to passivation is mainly Magnetite (Fe3O4) compound.

Sea urchin is an indicator of coastal environmental changes in the global warming era, and is also a model organism in developmental biology and evolution. Due to the depletion of wild resources, new aquaculture techniques for improving stocks have been well studied. The gut microbiome shapes various aspects of a host’s physiology. However, these microbiome structures and functions on sea urchins, particularly Mesocentrotus nudus and Strongylocentrotus intermedius which are important marine bioresources commonly found in Japan, have not been fully investigated yet. Using metagenomic approaches including meta16S and shotgun metagenome sequencings, the structures, functions, and dynamics of the gut microbiome of M. nudus and S. intermedius, related to both habitat environment and host growth, were studied. Firstly, a broad meta16S analysis revealed that at the family level, Psychromonadaceae and Flavobacteriaceae reads (38–71%) dominated in these sea urchins, which is a unique feature observed in species in Japan. Flavobacteriaceae reads were more abundant in individuals after rearing in an aquarium with circulating compared to one with running water. Campylobacteraceae and Vibrionaceae abundances increased in both kinds of laboratory-reared sea urchins in both types of experiments. 2-weeks feeding experiments of M. nudus and S. intermedius transplanted from the farm to laboratory revealed that these gut microbial structures were affected by diet rather than rearing environments and host species. Secondly, further meta16S analysis of microbial reads related to M. nudus growth revealed that at least four Amplicon Sequence Variant (ASV) affiliated to Saccharicrinis fermentans, which is known to be a nitrogen (N2) fixing bacterium, showed a significant positive correlation to the body weight and test diameter. Interestingly, gut microbiome comparisons using shotgun metagenome sequencing of individuals showing higher and lower growth rates revealed a significant abundance of “Nitrate and nitrite ammonification” genes in the higher-grown individuals under the circulating water rearing. These findings provide new insights on the structure-function relationship of sea urchin gut microbiomes beyond previously reported nitrogen fixation function in sea urchin in 1950s; we discovered a nitrate reduction function into ammonium for the growth promotion of sea urchin.

Humans categorize unwanted sounds in the environment as noise. Consequently, noise is associated with negative human and ecological values, especially when it is derived from an anthropogenic source. Although evidence confirms that many machine-generated anthropogenic sounds have negative impacts on animal behavior and communication, natural sources of non-biological sound, such as wind, rain, running water, and sea waves (geophonies) have also been categorized as noise and are frequently dismissed or mischaracterized in acoustic studies as an outside factor of acoustic habitats rather than an integrated sonic component of ecological processes and species adaptations. While the proliferation of machine-generated sound in the Biosphere has become an intrusive phenomenon in recent history, geophony has shaped the Earth’s sonic landscapes for billions of years. Therefore, geophonies have very important sonic implications to the evolution and adaptation of soniferous species, forming essential ecological and semiotical relationships. This creates a need to distinguish geophonies from machine-generated sounds and how species respond to each accordingly, especially given their acoustic similarities in the frequency spectrum. Here, we introduce concepts and terminology that address these differences in the context of ecoacoustics. We also discuss how Acoustic Complexity Indices (ACIs) can offer new possibilities to quantifiably evaluate geophony in relation to their sonic contest.

Erosion, transportation and deposition by running water are closely related and these works are performed in association and not in isolation. One cannot be performed without others. These works are determined on other factors like topography, geology, structure and composition of rocks, slope, amount of water availability and its characteristics, climate etc. Huge catchment area of the Gandak River is lying in the Himalayan mountainous region. This region is receiving good amount of rainfall concentrated in four months of monsoonal period June to September (JJAS). This period has also high temperatures leading to large amount of glacial ice melt. Hence, enormous water is drained off the mountain steep slope. The Himalaya is very young and has fragile rocks and ecosystem. Anthropogenic activities in those areas are primary cause, apart from natural weathering, for generation of more and more shattered materials which are brought by running water downstream much easily. Therefore, highly sediment concentrated water brings large quantity of loads. It is deposited in suitable conditions along its paths in the plain and with flood water. It results the formation of flood plain. According to the erosion and deposition, different types of major and minor features are formed. In other words, water and sediment determine the layout of the plain appearance. In this background, it is attempted to (i) study sediment concentration in discharged water and (ii) illustrate the channel planform of the Gandak River in the plain. To achieve these aims, secondary data has been collected and analyzed. It is expected that this study will help in executing an integrated development plan for the flood affected area of Lower Gandak River Plain. Keywords: sediment load, channel bars, channel planform, meandering, braiding, slope/gradient and channel cutoff.
