The Fluid-structure Coupling Analysis of Steel-Wire-Reinforced Flexible Pipe Under Inner Fluid Pressure Impact

Identifying dynamic characteristics of the fluid filled steel-wire-reinforced flexible pipe is vital in controlling the pipe vibration. A direct fluid-structure coupling method based on finite element analysis is proposed and validated by modal simulation of an oil filled T-shape pipe. An innovative way of modeling steel-wire-reinforced rubber pipe is put forward. The modeling method is validated by modal test of the water-filled pipe. The 2nd Mooney-Rivlin constitutive model is used for the rubber material. Transient dynamic simulations of a bending steel-wire-reinforced pipe filled with water under step and sine-shape pressure impact are performed for the first time. Different fluid turbulence models are used to evaluate the influences on pipe vibration. The dynamic characteristics of the water filled flexible pipe is researched under different fluid pressures. The vibration peak frequencies of the water-filled pipe under various impact excitations coincide well with the fluid-structure coupling modes of the pipe.

Nonlinear, time-domain hydroelastic analysis of flexible offshore structures requires that the structural motion be transferred to the fluid model and the resulting fluid pressure at the fluid-structure interface be transferred from the fluid model to the structure. When the structural mesh and the fluid mesh describe two distinct three-dimensional surfaces, the transfer of displacement and pressure is both difficult and non-unique. In this paper, a new transfer strategy based on the variational-based smoothing element analysis (SEA) technique is presented. The displacement transfer uses the original formulation of the SEA method, although the application of the procedure to displacement transfer is new. For energy conservation during the reverse pressure transfer, the original functional in the SEA method is enhanced with a new term that attempts to conserve the work done by the hydrodynamic forces when obtaining the global structural nodal forces. To evaluate the transfer methodology, the hydrodynamic response of three rigid bodies are considered. Pressure contours, hydrodynamic coefficients, and motions that are calculated based on the data transferred with the proposed method are compared with the results that are obtained from standard rigid-body hydrodynamics theory that does not include a structural finite element model. The method is shown to work very well. In addition, it has general applicability and it can deal with relatively large geometric differences in the meshes.

Abstract A procedure based on steady state rolling contact Finite Element Analysis (FEM) has been developed to predict tire cross section tread wear profile under specified vehicle driving conditions. This procedure not only considers the tire construction effects, it also includes the effects of materials, vehicle setup, test course, and driver's driving style. In this algorithm, the vehicle driving conditions are represented by the vehicle acceleration histogram. Vehicle dynamic simulations are done to transform the acceleration histogram into tire loading condition distributions for each tire position. Tire weight loss rates for different vehicle accelerations are generated based on a steady state rolling contact simulation algorithm. Combining the weight loss rate and the vehicle acceleration histogram, nine typical tire loading conditions are chosen with different weight factors to represent tire usage conditions. It is discovered that the tire tread wear rate profile is changing continuously as the tire is worn. Simulation of a new tire alone cannot be used to predict the tire cross-section tread wear profile. For this reason, an incremental tread wear simulation procedure is performed to predict the tire cross section tread wear profile. Compared with actual tire cross-section tread wear profiles, good results are obtained from the simulations.

AbstractIn this work, the mechanical response of a steel wire mesh panel against a punching load is studied starting from laboratory test conditions and extending the results to field applications. Wire meshes anchored with bolts and steel plates are extensively used in rockfall protection and slope stabilization. Their performances are evaluated through laboratory tests, but the mechanical constraints, the geometry and the loading conditions may strongly differ from the in situ conditions leading to incorrect estimations of the strength of the mesh. In this work, the discrete element method is used to simulate a wire mesh. After validation of the numerical mesh model against experimental data, the punching behaviour of an anchored mesh panel is investigated in order to obtain a more realistic characterization of the mesh mechanical response in field conditions. The dimension of the punching element, its position, the anchor plate size and the anchor spacing are varied, providing analytical relationships able to predict the panel response in different loading conditions. Furthermore, the mesh panel aspect ratio is analysed showing the existence of an optimal value. The results of this study can provide useful information to practitioners for designing secured drapery systems, as well as for the assessment of their safety conditions.

This paper provides a mathematical description of hydromechanical coupling associated with propagation of localized damage. The framework incorporates an embedded discontinuity approach and addresses the assessment of both hydraulic and mechanical properties in the region intercepted by a fracture. Within this approach, an internal length scale parameter is explicitly employed in the definition of equivalent permeability as well as the tangential stiffness operators. The effect of the progressive evolution of damage on the hydro-mechanical coupling is examined and an evolution law is derived governing the variation of equivalent permeability with the continuing deformation. The framework is verified by a numerical study involving 3D simulation of an axial splitting test carried out on a saturated sample under displacement and fluid pressure-controlled conditions. The finite element analysis incorporates the Polynomial-Pressure-Projection (PPP) stabilization technique and a fully implicit time integration scheme.

As a general trend, in order to reduce material consumption or to reduce the mass of the structures, composite floor slabs solutions are used to achieve large spans floor slabs. This solutions led to floors sensitive to vibrations induced generally by human activities. As a verification of the design concepts of the composite floors, usually, it is recommended a further examination of the floor after completion by experimental tests. Although the experimental values of the dynamic response of the floor are uniquely determined, the processing can take two directions of evaluation. The first direction consist in determining the dynamic characteristics of the floor and their comparison with the design values. Another way that can be followed in the processing of the experimental results is to consider the human perception and comfort to the vibration on floors. The paper aims to present a case study on a composite floor, with steel beams and concrete slab, tested on-site. Both aspects of data processing are analyzed, in terms of the structural element, and in terms of the effect on human perception and comfort. Experimentally obtained values for the dynamic characteristics of the floor are compared with numerical values from finite element analysis, while the second type of characteristic values are compared with various human comfort threshold values found in international standards.

Suspension-bridge cables are constructed from strands of galvanized steel wire. They are failure-critical structural members, so a fundamental understanding of their mechanics is imminently important in quantifying suspension bridge safety. The load-carrying capabilities of such strands after local wire failures have been the subject of many theoretical studies utilizing analytical equations and finite-element analysis. Little experimental data, however, exists to validate these models.Over the past five years we have developed a methodology for measuring stress/strain transfer within parallel wire strands of suspension bridge cables using neutron diffraction [1,2]. In this paper we describe the design and verification of parallel cable strands used in our studies. We describe the neutron diffraction strain measurements performed on standard 7-wire and expanded 19-wire models in various configurations at both the Los Alamos National Laboratory Spectrometer for Materials Research at Temperature and Stress (LANL SMARTS) and at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory VULCAN Engineering Materials Diffractometer (ORNL VULCAN). Particular attention is placed on the challenges of aligning and measuring multibody systems with high strain gradients at body-to-body contact points.
