In this study, 2D finite element (FE) solving process with the conformal perfectly matched layer (PML) is elucidated to perform the electromagnetic scattering computation. With the 2D monostatic RCS as the optimization objective, a sensitivity analysis of the basic design parameters of conformal PML (e.g., layer thickness, loss factor, extension order and layer number) is conducted to identify the major parameters of conformal PML that exerts more significant influence on 2D RCS. Lastly, the major design parameters of conformal PML are optimized by the simulated annealing algorithm (SA). As revealed from the numerical examples, the parameter design and optimization method of conformal PML based on SA is capable of enhancing the absorption effect exerted by the conformal PML and decreasing the error of the RCS calculation. It is anticipated that the parameter design method of conformal PML based on RCS optimization can be applied to the cognate absorbing boundary and 3D electromagnetic computation.

Abstract This paper describes a system for parametric design and optimization of complex products. In the system, the use of knowledge-based and mathematical programming methods is combined. The motivation is that while knowledge-based methods are well suited for modeling products, they are insufficient when dealing with design problems that can be given an optimization formulation. This weakness was approached by including the information necessary for stating an optimization problem in the product models. A system optimization method can then be applied. The system also performs sensitivity analysis and has an interactive optimization module. The use of the system is illustrated by an example; the design and optimization of a two-speed gearbox.

In this paper, the optimization method we obtained from dual-orifice atomizers previously is used to design and optimize new dual-orifice atomizers, whereas there are some differences between the new dual-orifice atomizer and dual-orifice atomizer used in Part I. For example, the mass flow is much smaller, there is an expansion angle at pilot nozzle to regulate pilot stage spray cone angle, and there is no recess length between main nozzle and pilot nozzle. Influences of structure parameters on mass flow, spray cone angle and liquid film fusion and separation are investigated, which are consistent with the expectation. Structure parameters that meet performance requirements of dual-orifice atomizer are analyzed. In addition, a new phenomenon has been found is that liquid film oscillation appears with the increase of Δ P, which should be avoided during the design and optimization of new atomizers. Pilot liquid film oscillation will influence the development of dual-orifice liquid film. Pilot swirling groove depth and expansion angle of pilot nozzle are key parameters that influence liquid film oscillation. Conclusions in this paper can be used to guide the design and optimization of new dual-orifice atomizers.

As an important overcurrent component in a waterjet propulsion system, the inlet passage is used to connect the propulsion pump and the bottom of the propulsion ship. The anticavitation, vibration, and noise performance of the waterjet propulsion pump are significantly affected by the hydraulic performance of the inlet passage. The hydraulic performance of the inlet passage directly affects the overall performance of the waterjet propulsion system, thus the design and optimization method of the inlet passage is an important part of the hydraulic optimization of the waterjet propulsion system. In this study, the hydraulic characteristics of the inlet passage in the waterjet propulsion system with different flow parameters and geometric parameters were studied by a combination of numerical simulation and experimental verification. The model test was used to verify the hydraulic characteristics of the waterjet propulsion system, and the results show that the numerical results are in good agreement with the test results. The numerical results are reliable. The hydraulic performance of the inlet passage is significantly affected by the inlet velocity ratio. There is a certain correlation between the hydraulic performance of the inlet passage and ship speed, and the hydraulic performance of the inlet passage is limited by ship speed. The geometric parameters of the best optimization case are as follows: the inflow dip angle α is 35°, the length L is 6.38D0, and the upper lip angle is 4°. The optimal operating conditions are the conditions of IVR 0.69–0.87.

The shape of the tuning stub of the wide slot printed antenna is an important factor which affects the antenna’s performances. In this paper, a new design and optimization method of wideband printed slot antenna using a shape blending algorithm is presented. The proposed antenna consists of a wide rectangular slot and a tuning stub, whose profile is formed by the shape blending outcome from a pie and a diamond shape. The method is used to design an ultra-wideband antenna. The impact on the impedance bandwidth through the antenna geometry change with the different shape blending results has been investigated and analyzed. To verify the proposed design, the antenna prototype was designed, fabricated, and measured. The measured results are compared with the simulation and show good agreement.
