The visualization of organic macromolecules such as proteins, nucleic acids, viruses and virus components has reached its high degree of effectiveness owing to refinements and reliability of instruments and to the invention of methods for enhancing the structure of these materials within the electron image. The latter techniques have been most important because what can be seen depends upon the molecular and atomic character of the object as modified which is rarely evident in the pristine material. Structure may thus be displayed by the arts of positive and negative staining, shadow casting, replication and other techniques. Enhancement of contrast, which delineates bounds of isolated macromolecules has been effected progressively over the years as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 by these methods. We now look to the future wondering what other visions are waiting to be seen. The instrument designers will need to exact from the arts of fabrication the performance that theory has prescribed as well as methods for phase and interference contrast with explorations of the potentialities of very high and very low voltages. Chemistry must play an increasingly important part in future progress by providing specific stain molecules of high visibility, substrates of vanishing “noise” level and means for preservation of molecular structures that usually exist in a solvated condition.

The output of the ultramicrotomy process with its high strain levels is dependent upon the input, ie., the nature of the material being machined. Apart from the geometrical constraints offered by the rake and clearance faces of the tool, each material is free to deform in whatever manner necessary to satisfy its material structure and interatomic constraints. Noncrystalline materials appear to survive the process undamaged when observed in the TEM. As has been demonstrated however microtomed plastics do in fact suffer damage to the top and bottom surfaces of the section regardless of the sharpness of the cutting edge or the tool material. The energy required to seperate the section from the block is not easily propogated through the section because the material is amorphous in nature and has no preferred crystalline planes upon which defects can move large distances to relieve the applied stress. Thus, the cutting stresses are supported elastically in the internal or bulk and plastically in the surfaces. The elastic strain can be recovered while the plastic strain is not reversible and will remain in the section after cutting is complete.

The paper deals with development of a general theory of the firm. It discusses the demand for such a theory, reviews existing approaches to its generalization, and offers a new variant of general theory of the firm based on the contract theory. The theory is based on minimization of opportunistic behaviour determined by the material structure of production (a classification of ten structural factors is offered). This framework is applied to the analysis of three boundaries problems (boundaries of the job, boundaries of the unit, boundaries of the firm) and five integration dilemmas (vertical, horizontal, functional, related, and conglomerate).

AbstractExpanding thermal plasma CVD (ETP CVD) has been used to deposit thin microcrystalline silicon films. In this study we varied the position at which the silane is injected in the expanding hydrogen plasma: relatively far from the substrate and close to the plasma source, giving a long interaction time of the plasma with the silane, and close to the substrate, resulting in a short interaction time. The material structure is studied extensively. The crystalline fractions as obtained from Raman spectroscopy as well as from X-ray diffraction (XRD) vary from 0 to 67%. The average particle sizes vary from 6 to 17 nm as estimated from the (111) XRD peak using the Scherrer formula. Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and flotation density measurements indicate void volume fractions of about 4 to 6%. When the samples are tilted the SAXS signal is lower than for the untilted case, indicating elongated objects parallel to the growth direction in the films. We show that the material properties are influenced by the position of silane injection in the reactor, indicating a change in the plasma chemistry.

A method of ultrasonic control of the mechanical stresses which takes into account the heterogeneity of the material structure and does not require unloading of the structure or using reference samples is considered. The procedure is based on echo-method of measuring time of the bulk elastic wave propagation and determination of the relative values ν31 and ν32 related to the material structure and mechanical stresses. It is shown that stresses violate the linearity of the relationship observed between the parameters in the absence of the mechanical stresses in the rolled material. This effect formed a basis for developing a method of the deviator stress determination. The purpose of the study is to demonstrate the main advantages of the developed method against the known ultrasonic techniques used for evaluation of the mechanical stresses, give theoretical grounds to the effect which allows taking into account the heterogeneity of the material structure, and also to exemplify the procedure. An analytical expression is derived using bulk elastic wave velocity in an orthotropic material composed of cubic crystallites and an assumption on the existence of simple proportional relationship between the coefficients of the orientation distribution function in rolled metal. Presented results of the mathematical modeling confirm the experimentally observed linear dependence between the parameters ν31 and ν32 in the absence of mechanical stresses. The results of evaluating residual stresses in a welded steel plate are presented as an example of the applicability of the developed procedure. Data of ultrasonic technique and data of strain gage measurements are compared. The features of the described method of stress determination are marked and the applicability limits are specified.

Composite materials are very often used in the manufacture of lightweight parts in the automotive industry, manufacturing of cost-efficient elements implies proper technology combined with a structural optimization of the material structure. The paper presents the manufacturing process, experimental and numerical analyses of the mechanical behavior for two composite hoods with different design concepts and material layouts as body components of a small electric vehicle. The first model follows the black metal design and the second one is based on the composite design concept. Manufacturing steps and full details regarding the fabrication process are delivered in the paper. Static stiffness and strain values for lateral, longitudinal and torsional loading cases were investigated. The first composite hood is 254 times lighter than a similar steel hood and the second hood concept is 22% lighter than the first one. The improvement in terms of lateral stiffness for composite hoods about a similar steel hood is for the black metal design concept about 80% and 157% for the hood with a sandwich structure and modified backside frame. Transversal stiffness is few times higher for both composite hoods while the torsional stiffness has an increase of 62% compared to a similar steel hood.

Continuous carbon fibre-reinforced thermoplastic composites have convincing anisotropic properties, which can be used to strengthen structural components in a local, variable and efficient way. In this study, an additive manufacturing (AM) process is introduced to fabricate in situ consolidated continuous fibre-reinforced polycarbonate. Specimens with three different nozzle temperatures were in situ consolidated and tested in a three-point bending test. Computed tomography (CT) is used for a detailed analysis of the local material structure and resulting material porosity, thus the results can be put into context with process parameters. In addition, a highly curved test structure was fabricated that demonstrates the limits of the process and dependent fibre strand folding behaviours. These experimental investigations present the potential and the challenges of additive manufacturing-based in situ consolidated continuous fibre-reinforced polycarbonate.

As a kind of low-frequency vehicle interior noise, tire acoustic cavity resonance noise plays an important role, since the other noise (e.g., engine noise, wind noise and friction noise) has been largely suppressed. For the suspension system, wheels stand first in the propagation path of this energy. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the influence of wheel design on the transmission characteristics of this vibration energy. However, currently the related research has not received enough attention. In this paper, two sizes of aluminum alloy wheel finite element models are constructed, and their modal characteristics are analyzed and verified by experimental tests simultaneously. A mathematically fitting sound pressure load model arising from the tire acoustic cavity resonance acting on the rim is first put forward. Then, the power flow method is applied to investigate the resonance energy distribution and transmission characteristics in the wheels. The structure intensity distribution and energy transmission efficiency can be described and analyzed clearly. Furthermore, the effects of material structure damping and the wheel spoke number on the energy transmission are also discussed.
