The effects of tangential gas flow, arc current, and water irascible solvents on the sensitivity of the plasma jet source, when used with aqueous solutions, have been studied. The optimum conditions for sensitivity have been established and the use of certain mixed aqueous/organic media have been found to improve the limits of detection significantly The effects of hydrochloric, nitric, and sulphuric acid were investigated and found to depend on the nature of the acid but not on the concentration. The matrix effect was found to be less severe than with many methods of excitation. Two examples of the application of the plasma jet to analytical problems are reviewed briefly.

Abstract In D.C. plasma guns used for plasma spraying, the properties of the plasma forming-gas control, to a great extent, the characteristics of the plasma jet and the momentum, heat and mass transfer to the particles injected in the flow. This paper deals with mixtures of argon, helium and hydrogen and the effect of the volume composition of these mixtures on the dynamic and static behavior of the plasma jet. Both were investigated from the measurements of arc voltage and gas velocity. Correlations between these parameters and the operating variables (arc current, gas flow rate, gas mixture composition) were established from a dimensional analysis. The results were supported by the calculation of the thermodynamic and transport properties of the ternary gas mixtures used in this study.

Background:Increased consumer demand for curry leaves free from pesticides demands fast and reliable analytical methods for the analysis of pesticide residues.Objective:The optimization of a QuEChERS based sample preparation technique with improved analytical accuracy by removing interfering matrix components for LC-MS/MS analysis of pesticide residues from curry leaves.Methods:A modified QuEChERS solid phase extraction method was developed and validated for the analysis of 26 pesticides in fresh and dried curry leaves. The effects of the sample preparation steps and column retention time on the matrix suppression of analyte ions were also evaluated.Results:Validation parameters were found within an acceptable range. The matrix effect evaluation studies showed that the QuEChERS sample preparation was able to minimize the ion suppression of analytes due to co-eluting matrix of components and that a d-SPE clean up step had major role in reducing matrix effect. The gradient mobile phase with longer retention time for analytes resulted in comparatively lesser matrix effects than the isocratic mobile phase of non-polar nature. Even after the clean up, a considerable number of compounds had more than 20% reduction in their MS response in the gradient mobile phase.Conclusion:This study emphasized the need of proper sample clean up before a LC-MS/MS analysis and the usage of matrix matched standards and mobile phase that ultimately results in an appropriate analyte separation in reasonable retention times.

The authors investigated periodic potential changes measured on oriented sections of Al single crystals during spontaneous dissolution in dilute aqueous solutions of KOH, with the aim to find optimum conditions for the formation of potential oscillations. It was found that this phenomenon is related with the kinetics of the reaction investigated, whose rate also changed periodically. The mechanism of the oscillations is discussed in view of the experimental findings.

The paper reviews the preparation of the different metallic nanocomposites. In the preparation of composites, especially in the case of nanocomposites, interfacial phenomena play an important role. This review summarizes the literature on various interfacial phenomena, such as wettability and reactivity in the case of casting techniques and colloidal behavior in the case of electrochemical and electroless methods. The main contribution of this work lies in the evaluation of collected interfacial phenomena and difficulties in the production of metal matrix composites, for both nano-sized and micro-sized reinforcements. This study can guide the composite maker in choosing the best criteria for producing metal matrix composites, which means a real interface with good adhesion between the matrix and the reinforcement. This criterion results in desirable mechanical and physical properties and homogenous dispersion of the reinforcement in the matrix.

In situ NbC and VC nanoparticles reinforced Fe-Si-Mn-Nb-V matrix composite was carried out using a plasma jet with a plasma gas flow of (Ar + CH4) for very short time. The process involve improving the efficiency of the reaction in terms of consumption of the available active nitrogen atoms as well as the production of very fine and homogeneous distribution of all reinforcing phases of ceramic particles, preferable in the nanometer range. The nanoreinforcements synthesized by in situ reaction in this hybrid composite are NbC and VC ceramic particles.
