In order to contribute to the improvement of aquaculture production, reproductive parameters of three populations of Oreochromis niloticus of Cameroon were studied between March and May 2019 at the research station of Foumban. At this effect, a total of 81 parents (27 males and 51 females with respective weight 124 ± 6g and 144 ± 5g) coming from three hydrogeographicals origins (Niger, Sanaga and IRAD Station) were randomly distributed in triplicate in nine concrete tanks of a m² each with a sex ratio of one male for two females (1♂/2♀). Throughout the test, six females carrying eggs in the oral cavity were collected in each population and 45 days after the start of the trial, all the offspring were collected and the adults sacrificed. At the end of experiment, the IRAD population presented highest significant values (p ≤ 0.05) regardless of the performances considered. The values of the gonado-somatic and the gonado-metric characteristics significantly lower (p ≤ 0.05) were obtained in Niger population (GSR = 0.04 ± 0.02, GSI = 0.05 ± 0.03 and GMR=0.19 ± 0.08;GMI= 0.24±0.07). Considering sex, males presented the lowest significant values (p ≤ 0.05) for all the characteristics studied (GSR = 0.04±0.01, GSI = 0.04±0.01 and GMR= 0.23±0.08;GMI= 0.29±0.09).

In this study, a total of 1068 specimens Sardinella aurita of which 553 females and 515 males were examined. The objectif of this study was to determine the reproductive parameters of Sardinella aurita. The sex ratio was significantly in favor of females (55%). The size at first sexual maturity was estimated at 18.9 cm for females and 18.0 cm for males. The monthly variation of sexual maturity stages and gonado-somatic index (GSI) allowed to locate the reproduction periods from February to June and from September to December. The mean absolute fecundity was estimated at 110.794 ± 7582 oocytes whereas relative fecundity was about 422 ± 26 oocytes per gram of female.

Abstract A total of 871 females (76–122 cm) and 86 males (68–100 cm) of Centroscymnus coelolepis caught in Portuguese mainland waters were examined for reproductive characteristics. One hermaphroditic individual of 95 cm was found. Males were few in numbers and dominated by immature specimens. Female length at first sexual maturity was 98.5 cm. Mean ovarian and uterine fecundity were 13.2 oocytes per female and 9.9 embryos per pregnant female, respectively. Total length of embryos with completely absorbed external yolk sacs ranged between 233 and 300 mm. Sex ratio (F/M) of embryos with completely absorbed external yolk sac was 0.9. All stages of reproduction were found during the 12-month sampling period. Results were compared with those from other regions. A hypothesis is formulated on the existence of several regional populations based on morphometric and reproductive parameters observed in different areas.

Aflatoxin contamination, particularly common in cultured fishes in Asian countries, are considered unsafe both for fish and human health. However, the presence of aflatoxin in cultured fish feed and their effect are still under estimated in Bangladesh. The present study aimed to assess the effects of aflatoxin on growth performance and residues in tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fingerlings. Fish feed were treated with several concentration of aflatoxin as 0 ppb (T0, control), 25 ppb (T1), 50 ppb (T2) and 100 ppb (T3) and fed the tilapia fingerlings (n=10) in individual glass aquaria (24×12×12 inch, 105-litre capacity) conditions for 12 weeks. Comparatively higher body length (cm) and weight gain (g) were observed in treatment T0 (1.68 and 4.98) and T1 (1.60 and 5.48) than those of treatment T2 (1.31 and 4.06) and T3 (1.20 and 3.10), respectively. The specific growth rate (SGR) were almost similar in treatment T0 (52%), T1 (51%) and T2 (52%) whereas declined significantly (p<0.05) in T3 (39%). Higher survival rate was also demonstrated in treatment T0 (90%) and T1 (90%) whereas significantly decreased in treatment T2 (60%) and T3 (40%). The residue of aflatoxin was not detected in T0 and T1. On the contrary, the residual effect in tilapia fingerling was evident in T2 and T3 treatment. The findings of the present study revealed that aflatoxin contaminated feed is harmful for the growth performance and survival of O. niloticus fingerlings. Further study is necessary to safeguard the aquaculture production as well as to produce healthy food for human consumption.

Investigating the determinants of reproductive biology of fishes is an essential component of biological research. Breeding pattern was investigated to determine the impact of exotic Oreochromis niloticus on the native congeneric Oreochromis macrochir in the upper Kabompo River. Gonado-somatic index and sex ratio was used to investigate the breeding pattern in both invaded (where O. niloticus is present) and uninvaded (where O. niloticus is absent) sections of the river. Oreochromis macrochir was the only native congeneric species found in both sections. Results showed that the overall gonado-somatic index means for both sexes of O. macrochir in both sections were similar. For O. niloticus in invaded section indicated all year reproduction though reduced spawning in cold season (May-June), but with increased spawning activity in wet season (February-March). In O. macrochir, males and females were found breeding in both dry and wet seasons only, as for cold season no reproduction was recorded. Sex ratio (females: males) was 1:1.3 and 1:1.7 for O. niloticus and O. macrochir respectively, and both significantly deviated from the sex ratio of 1:1 (ꭓ2=8.42 and 9.37; p<0.05). Oreochromis niloticus formed the most abundant fish caught 221(63.5%) than O. macrochir 127(36.5%). Our study has revealed that O. niloticus was able to spawn in all seasons with 23% higher breeding population than O. macrochir, which explains the suppression in the abundance. We expect O. niloticus to invade further downstream of the Kabompo River due to natural dispersion.

Characterization of the reproduction of local guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus L.) raised in Kipushi and Lubumbashi (DRC) ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to study the reproductive and growth characteristics of local guinea pigs. Sixty-six (66) guinea pigs were divided into 2 lots (Lubumbashi and Kipushi) of 30 females subdivided by lot of ten (10) reared in a 1 m2 cage and 6 males with a sex ratio of 1 male versus 10 females and natural projections. The results obtained showed that the fertility rate was high for Kipushi females (86.67%) compared to that recorded in Lubumbashi (80.00%). Moreover, the weight of the females at birth and at weaning was not influenced by their origin. At the level of the litter at birth, Lubumbashi presented a higher number (58%) than Kipushi (53%) for born babies. Therefore, the average individual weight at birth (70.4g) the average individual weight at weaning (167.4g) the average weight per litter at birth 71.3g and at weaning 168.03g were higher for the Kipushi animals (p˂0,05). While the litter at weaning, the number of pups per weaning was similar between sites (P˃ 0.05). In addition, numerical and weight productivity was high for Kipushi females (1.57) and low for Lubumbashi females (1.17). The evolution of the weight of the guinea pigs varied according to the site. These results on reproductive parameters reveal the existence of great variability between these two local populations, which creates an opportunity for the genetic improvement of local guinea pigs.
