Intellectual capital approaches become critical at universities mainly due to the fact that knowledge is the main output as well as input in these institutions. Although some attempts to measure intellectual capital have been made so far, there is still a long way to go. The purpose of the present article is to provide a model for the measurement of intellectual capital in higher education institutions. The results of a study done at Spanish public universities are used to indicate which intangible elements need to be measured, and a new framework for the measurement and management of intellectual capital is presented. Points for practitioners The main contribution of this article is the validation of the consensus on the key intangible elements and indicators that should comprise a university intellectual capital model. Our proposed intellectual capital model helps universities on the path to presenting information that is useful to their stakeholders, contributing to greater transparency, accountability and comparability in the higher education sector. This article offers useful and specific guidelines for intellectual capital reporting practice in universities. The creation of a framework of intellectual capital reporting facilitates benchmarking analysis and comparative studies in order to help decision-making processes, improve the articulation of public policies and increase transparency in the whole system.

This article is devoted to the assessment of intellectual capital of a teacher in the system of inclusive education. It is indisputable that at present there is no unanimous opinion regarding the approaches to evaluate and the methods used to assess intellectual capital. Based on the review of methods for the evaluation of intellectual capital, methods used often are presented in the context of modernity. The authors have developed a comprehensive assessment of the intellectual capital of a teacher in an educational organization of higher education. The stages of such an assessment are considered in detail: Stage 0 - goals and objectives of the assessment, Stage 1 - teacher’s self-assessment, Stage 2 - experts' assessment, Stage 3 - customers and consumers assessment; Stage 4 - the results of a comprehensive assessment and recommendations. There are many reasons for assessing the intellectual capital of a teacher, one of the main reasons is the constant improvement of the quality of education, which is directly related to modern requirements: expanding the range of educational services and accessibility of education for all (inclusive education).

‘To learn about X, observe what happens to the system when X is removed.’ What happens to the higher education student experience when, during a pandemic, so many of the avenues for building a sense of belonging are radically and fundamentally disrupted? How should we respond as individuals, a collective and a sector, to redress this? The national student survey data in Australia has highlighted a significant drop in learner engagement and their sense of belonging as a result of the pandemic. Indeed, the pandemic has been a significant point of anxiety for students, educators, and universities globally. We see the pandemic as a unique opportunity to critically examine belongingness among university students in a climate where their normal avenues to feel they belong need to establish a new kind of normal. In this article, we seek to articulate what can be learned from the pandemic experience about student belongingness and what instructors can do to improve it, even under difficult circumstances. We found opportunities to strengthen a students’ sense of belonging in online environments, when necessary, and how responses within the constraints of lockdown and emergency remote teaching can still support student success.

Their impacts on the environmental awareness of college students are analyzed using the propensity score matching method. The analysis results for 485 survey data points from college students show that both of these two pedagogies influence college students’ environmental awareness positively, and the effect of student-driven pedagogy is higher. The conclusion provides insight for the further development of college students’ environmental education.

The growth in inter-cultural relations among global academic circles and the globalization of scientific thought it entails, have led to a conflict between various cultures and languages, which is more evident at the language level. English has become a universal language of communication and serves as a tool to disseminate the results of scientific research conducted in various countries, to exchange ideas, to accept or decline hypotheses. One could suppose that English used in a given branch of science includes cultural and linguistic characteristics of scholars of various nationalities which need to be specified and investigated thereby contributing to the further development of scientific communication in the field. The present article offers two models of written and oral academic discourse.

Abstract. Although the development of research competency is an important goal of higher education in social sciences, instruments to measure this outcome often depend on the students’ self-ratings. To provide empirical evidence for the utility of a newly developed instrument for the objective measurement of social-scientific research competency, two validation studies across two independent samples were conducted. Study 1 ( n = 675) provided evidence for unidimensionality, expected differences in test scores between differently advanced groups of students as well as incremental validities over and above self-perceived research self-efficacy. In Study 2 ( n = 82) it was demonstrated that the competency measured indeed is social-scientific and relations to facets of fluid and crystallized intelligence were analyzed. Overall, the results indicate that the test scores reflected a trainable, social-scientific, knowledge-related construct relevant to research performance. These are promising results for the application of the instrument in the evaluation of research education courses in higher education.
