Introduction: Currently, we witness an explosive growth in the amount of information produced by humanity. This raises new fundamental problems of its efficient storage and processing. Commonly used magnetic, optical, and semiconductor information storage devices have several drawbacks related to small information density and limited durability. One of the promising novel approaches to solving these problems is DNA-based data storage. Purpose: An overview of modern DNA-based storage systems and related information-theoretic problems. Results: The current state of the art of DNA-based storage systems is reviewed. Types of errors occurring in them as well as corresponding error-correcting codes are analized. The disadvantages of these codes are shown, and possible pathways for improvement are mentioned. Proposed information-theoretic models of DNA-based storage systems are analyzed, and their limitation highlighted. In conclusion, main obstacles to practical implementation of DNA-based storage systems are formulated, which can be potentially overcome using information-theoretic methods considered in this overview.

In the onboard equipment, components of electronics, which have increased sensitivity to the effects of ionizing radiation are widely used. The transient processes in electronic products are particularly dangerous, associated with an absorbed dose of radiation, leading to functional or irre-versible failures in the operation of onboard systems.

The problem of SMART-data ambiguity in different models of hard disk drives of the same manufacturers is considered. This circumstance creates obstacles for the use of SMART technology when assessing and predicting the reliability of storage devices. The scientific task of the work is to study the dependence of the hard disk failure probability on the reliability parameters values for each individual storage device of any model of any manufacturer. In the course of the study, two interrelated parameters were analyzed: “5 Reallocated sectors count” and “9 Power-on hours” (the number of hours spent in the on state). As a result of the analysis, two types of dependences were revealed: drooping and dome shaped. The first means the maximum failure frequency of information storage devices immediately after commissioning, the second - after a certain period of time, actually coinciding with the warranty period for the products (two years). With the help of clustering in plane according to the coordinates of the number of reallocated sectors and the time of operation, two different reasons for the failure of the drives were discovered: due to deterioration of the disk surface and due to errors in the positioning of the read / write heads. Based on the variety of types of causes and consequences of equipment failure, the task of individual assessment of an individual data storage device reliability is proposed to be solved using several parameters simultaneously.

AlO. Metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) structures are key elements of modern electronic technology, including devices operating under conditions of exposure to penetrating radiation. One of the possible approaches to reducing radiation effects in MIS structures is the use of dielectrics, which reduce the generation and accumulation of excess space charge in the bulk of the dielectric. We investigated the system of dielectrics AlO - SiO. The study shows the suitability of using MIS structures based on a system of dielectrics for formation of devices with high radiation resistance. Applying a AlO layer on top of the SiO layer improves the performance of MIS structures by increasing the uniformity of parameters. The main effect of the influence of the AlO layer on the parameters of the structures is to reduce the mechanical stresses at the interface SiO -substrate. The trapping of electrons in AlO, compensates for the charge of the trapped holes in SiO, and reduces the parasitic current through AlO.

Development of software for automation of electrical characteristics measurement plays an important role, because this approach contributes to a significant time reduction. This article discusses the development and application of software for the study of electrical characteristics of miniature data storage modules developed by 3D integration technology for aerospace applications. In outer space there are a number of problems affecting the functioning of microelectronic equipment, in particular - heavy charged particles (HCP) that can lead to both single failures and latch-up effect, which is critical for memory chips. Therefore, there is a need to check the electrical parameters, such as the response time of protection against HCP. The software is developed in LabVIEW and can be used in manual and automatic modes, what allows to improve the efficiency of the testing process. The full range of measurements can be done by one operator in a short period of time.

Current data storage technologies cannot keep pace longer with exponentially growing amounts of data through the extensive use of social networking photos and media, etc. The "digital world” with 4.4 zettabytes in 2013 has predicted it to reach 44 zettabytes by 2020. From the past 30 years, scientists and researchers have been trying to develop a robust way of storing data on a medium which is dense and ever-lasting and found DNA as the most promising storage medium. Unlike existing storage devices, DNA requires no maintenance, except the need to store at a cool and dark place. DNA has a small size with high density; just 1 gram of dry DNA can store about 455 exabytes of data. DNA stores the informations using four bases, viz., A, T, G, and C, while CDs, hard disks and other devices stores the information using 0’s and 1’s on the spiral tracks. In the DNA based storage, after binarization of digital file into the binary codes, encoding and decoding are important steps in DNA based storage system. Once the digital file is encoded, the next step is to synthesize arbitrary single-strand DNA sequences and that can be stored in the deep freeze until use. When there is a need for information to be recovered, it can be done using DNA sequencing. New generation sequencing (NGS) capable of producing sequences with very high throughput at a much lower cost about less than 0.1 USD for one MB of data than the first sequencing technologies. Post-sequencing processing includes alignment of all reads using multiple sequence alignment (MSA) algorithms to obtain different consensus sequences. The consensus sequence is decoded as the reversal of the encoding process. Most prior DNA data storage efforts sequenced and decoded the entire amount of stored digital information with no random access, but nowadays it has become possible to extract selective files (e.g., retrieving only required image from a collection) from a DNA pool using PCR-based random access. Various scientists successfully stored up to 110 zettabytes data in one gram of DNA. In the future, with an efficient encoding, error corrections, cheaper DNA synthesis, and sequencing, DNA based storage will become a practical solution for storage of exponentially growing digital data.
