<p>An inherent characteristic of the many imaging modalities such as fluorescence microscopy and other microscopic modalities is the presence of intrinsic Poisson noise that may lead to degradation of the captured image during its formation. A nonlinear complex diffusion-based filter adapted to Poisson noise is proposed in this paper to restore and enhance the degraded microscopic images captured by imaging devices having photon limited light detectors. The proposed filter is based on a maximum a posterior approach to the image reconstruction problem. The formulation of the filtering problem as maximisation of a posterior is useful because it allows one to incorporate the Poisson likelihood term as a data attachment which can be added to an image prior model. Here, the Gibb's image prior model-based on energy functional defined in terms of gradient norm of the image is used. The performance of the proposed scheme has been compared with other standard techniques available in literature such as Wiener filter, regularised filter, Lucy-Richardson filter and another proposed nonlinear anisotropic diffusion-based filter in terms of mean square error, peak signal-to-noise ratio, correlation parameter and mean structure similarity index map.The results shows that the proposed complex diffusion-based filter adapted to Poisson noise performs better in comparison to other filters and is better choice for reduction of intrinsic Poisson noise from the digital microscopic images and it is also well capable of preserving edges and radiometric information such as luminance and contrast of the restored image.</p><p><strong>Defence Science Journal, 2011, 61(5), pp.452-461</strong><strong><strong>, DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.14429/dsj.61.1181</strong></strong></p>

Aim: Image is the most powerful tool to analyze the information. Sometimes the captured image gets affected with blur and noise in the environment, which degrades the quality of the image. Image restoration is a technique in image processing where the degraded image can be restored or recovered to its nearest original image. Materials and Methods: In this research Lucy-Richardson algorithm is used for restoring blurred and noisy images using MATLAB software. And the proposed work is compared with Wiener filter, and the sample size for each group is 30. Results: The performance was compared based on three parameters, Power Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM), Normalized Correlation (NC). High values of PSNR, SSIM and NC indicate the better performance of restoration algorithms. Lucy-Richardson provides a mean PSNR of 10.4086db, mean SSIM of 0.4173%, and NC of 0.7433% and Wiener filter provides a mean PSNR of 6.3979db, SSIM of 0.3016%, NC of 0.3276%. Conclusion: Based on the experimental results and statistical analysis using independent sample T test, image restoration using Lucy-Richardson algorithm significantly performs better than Wiener filter on restoring the degraded image with PSNR (P<0.001) and SSIM (P<0.001).

Image de-noising has been a challenging issue in the field of digital image processing. It involves the manipulation of image data to produce a visually high quality image. While maintaining the desired information in the quality of an image, elimination of noise is an essential task. Various domain applications such as medical science, forensic science, text extraction, optical character recognition, face recognition, face detection etc. deal with noise removal techniques. There exist a variety of noises that may corrupt the images in different ways. Here, we explore filtering techniques viz. Mean filter, Median filter and Wiener filter to remove noises existing in facial images. The noises of our interest are namely; Gaussian noise, Salt & Pepper noise, Poisson noise and Speckle noise in our study. Further, we perform a comparative study based on the parameters such as Mean Square Error (MSE), Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Structure Similarity Index Method (SSIM). For this research work, MATLAB R2013a on Labeled faces in Wild (lfw) database containing 120 facial images is used. Based upon the aforementioned parameters, we have attempted to analyze the performance of noise removal techniques with different types of noises. It has been observed that MSE, PSNR and SSIM for Mean filter are 44.19 with Poisson noise, 35.88 with Poisson noise and 0.197 with Gaussian noise respectively whereas for that of Median filter, these are 44.12 with Poisson noise, 46.56 with Salt & Pepper noise and 0.132 with Gaussian noise respectively. Wiener filter when contaminated with Poisson, Salt & Pepper and Gaussian noise, these parametric values are 44.52, 44.33 and 0.245 respectively. Based on these observations, we claim that the Median filtering technique works the best when contaminated with Poisson noise while the error strategy is dominant. On the other hand, Median filter also works the best with Salt & Pepper noise when Peak Signal to Noise Ratio is important. It is interesting to note that Median filter performs effectively with Gaussian noise using SSIM.

A 2-D Adaptive Trimmed Mean Autoregressive (ATMAR) model has been proposed for denoising of medical images corrupted with poisson noise. Unfiltered images are divided into smaller chunks and ATMAR model is applied on each chunk separately. In this paper, two 5x5 windows with 40% overlapping are used to predict the center pixel value of the central row. The AR coefficients are updated by sliding both windows forward with 60% shift. The same process is repeated to scan the entire image for prediction of a new denoised image. The Adaptive Trimmed Mean Filter (ATMF) eradicates the lowest and highest variations in pixel values of the ATMAR model denoised image and also average out the remaining neighborhood pixel values. Finally, power-law transformation is applied on the resultant image of the ATMAR model for contrast stretching. Image quality is judged in terms of correlation, Mean Squared Error (MSE), Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM) and Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) of the image with latest denoising techniques. The proposed technique showed an efficient way to scale down poisson noise in scintigraphic images on a pixel-by-pixel basis.

Recently, due to the increase in popularity of the Internet, the problem of digital data security over the Internet is increasing at a phenomenal rate. Watermarking is used for various notable applications to secure digital data from unauthorized individuals. To achieve this, in this article, we propose a joint encryption then-compression based watermarking technique for digital document security. This technique offers a tool for confidentiality, copyright protection, and strong compression performance of the system. The proposed method involves three major steps as follows: (1) embedding of multiple watermarks through non-sub-sampled contourlet transform, redundant discrete wavelet transform, and singular value decomposition; (2) encryption and compression via SHA-256 and Lempel Ziv Welch (LZW), respectively; and (3) extraction/recovery of multiple watermarks from the possibly distorted cover image. The performance estimations are carried out on various images at different attacks, and the efficiency of the system is determined in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and normalized correlation (NC), structural similarity index measure (SSIM), number of changing pixel rate (NPCR), unified averaged changed intensity (UACI), and compression ratio (CR). Furthermore, the comparative analysis of the proposed system with similar schemes indicates its superiority to them.

In computational auditory scene analysis, the accurate estimation of binary mask or ratio mask plays a key role in noise masking. An inaccurate estimation often leads to some artifacts and temporal discontinuity in the synthesized speech. To overcome this problem, we propose a new ratio mask estimation method in terms of Wiener filtering in each Gammatone channel. In the reconstruction of Wiener filter, we utilize the relationship of the speech and noise power spectra in each Gammatone channel to build the objective function for the convex optimization of speech power. To improve the accuracy of estimation, the estimated ratio mask is further modified based on its adjacent time–frequency units, and then smoothed by interpolating with the estimated binary masks. The objective tests including the signal-to-noise ratio improvement, spectral distortion and intelligibility, and subjective listening test demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method compared with the reference methods.

This paper proposes an encryption-based image watermarking scheme using a combination of second-level discrete wavelet transform (2DWT) and discrete cosine transform (DCT) with an auto extraction feature. The 2DWT has been selected based on the analysis of the trade-off between imperceptibility of the watermark and embedding capacity at various levels of decomposition. DCT operation is applied to the selected area to gather the image coefficients into a single vector using a zig-zig operation. We have utilized the same random bit sequence as the watermark and seed for the embedding zone coefficient. The quality of the reconstructed image was measured according to bit correction rate, peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), and similarity index. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed scheme is highly robust under different types of image-processing attacks. Several image attacks, e.g., JPEG compression, filtering, noise addition, cropping, sharpening, and bit-plane removal, were examined on watermarked images, and the results of our proposed method outstripped existing methods, especially in terms of the bit correction ratio (100%), which is a measure of bit restoration. The results were also highly satisfactory in terms of the quality of the reconstructed image, which demonstrated high imperceptibility in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR ≥ 40 dB) and structural similarity (SSIM ≥ 0.9) under different image attacks.

Image denoising is an inseparable pre-processing step of many image processing algorithms. Two mostly used image denoising algorithms are Nonlocal Means (NLM) and Block Matching and 3D Transform Domain Collaborative Filtering (BM3D). While BM3D outperforms NLM on variety of natural images, NLM is usually preferred when the algorithm complexity is an issue. In this thesis, we suggest modified version of these two methods that improve the performance of the original approaches. The conventional NLM uses weighted version of all patches in a search neighbourhood to denoise the center patch. However, it can include some dissimilar patches. Our first contribution, denoted by Similarity Validation Based Nonlocal Means (NLM-SVB), eliminates some of those unnecessary dissimilar patches in order to improve the performance of the algorithm. We propose a hard thresholding pre-processing step based on the exact distribution of distances of similar patches. Consequently, our method eliminates about 60% of dissimilar patches and improves NLM in terms of Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Stracuteral Similarity Index Measure (SSIM). Our second contribution, denoted by Probabilistic Weighting BM3D (PW-BM3D), is the result of our thorough study of BM3D. BM3D consists of two main steps. One is finding a basic estimate of the noiseless image by hard thresholding coefficients. The second one is using this estimate to perform wiener filtering. In both steps the weighting scheme in the aggregation process plays an important role. The current weighting process depends on the variance of retrieved coefficients after denoising which results in a biased weighting. In PW-BM3D, we propose a novel probabilistic weighting scheme which is a function of the probability of similarity of noiseless patches in each 3D group. The results show improvement over BM3D in terms of PSNR for an average of about 0.2dB.

In hearing aid devices, speech enhancement techniques are a critical component to enable users with hearing loss to attain improved speech quality under noisy conditions. Recently, the deep denoising autoencoder (DDAE) was adopted successfully for recovering the desired speech from noisy observations. However, a single DDAE cannot extract contextual information sufficiently due to the poor generalization in an unknown signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the local minima, and the fact that the enhanced output shows some residual noise and some level of discontinuity. In this paper, we propose a hybrid approach for hearing aid applications based on two stages: (1) the Wiener filter, which attenuates the noise component and generates a clean speech signal; (2) a composite of three DDAEs with different window lengths, each of which is specialized for a specific enhancement task. Two typical high-frequency hearing loss audiograms were used to test the performance of the approach: Audiogram 1 = (0, 0, 0, 60, 80, 90) and Audiogram 2 = (0, 15, 30, 60, 80, 85). The hearing-aid speech perception index, the hearing-aid speech quality index, and the perceptual evaluation of speech quality were used to evaluate the performance. The experimental results show that the proposed method achieved significantly better results compared with the Wiener filter or a single deep denoising autoencoder alone.
