MANAGEMENT OF STRUCTURAL INFORMATION AND CONTROLS WITH BIM

The aim of this research is the definition of a control planning for the reinforced concrete structures in place and the organization of all this information with the aid of BIM methodology. To better illustrate the process of information flow through BIM system, structural controls and the control plan have been applied to a case study concerning a new building. The BIM model contains all the information necessary for the design, scheduling, testing, construction, operation, management and maintenance of the structural parts of the building. The use of BIM model with relevant information and control sheet has enabled us to exploit the full potential of BIM during the construction phase; its main value consists in granting immediate access to as-built/as-operated building information. We created two models: the first identifies the technical elements that make up the building (LOD 100); while the second is characterized by a detailed definition (LOD 400). The frequencies systematization, organized according to the flow charts, has allowed the definition of a Gantt chart integrated with the control sheets. Controls referred to initial controls (i.e., acceptance of materials), follow-up controls and final controls. It is also possible to control and automatically update the final technical item tolerances.

<p>Building Information Modelling (BIM) has been increasingly expanding its application to different fields of civil engineering and Historic building information modelling (HBIM) is an example of that. Although, the concept has already drawn the attention of several researchers, there are still many limitations to a full and holistic process that may take HBIM to the same level of applicability that BIM used for new construction has.</p><p>Traditionally, assessment of existing structures, specially heritage structures, begin with the documentation of all important information dealing with the history, characteristics, type, material, uses and applied techniques, among other relevant information that may be retrieved by different sources. Further on, a geometrical survey accompanied with visual inspection and non or semi destructive testing leads to the geometry definition of the structure and to its condition (damage/defects) mapping. All of this information, must be analysed for consequent structural assessment and after stored in a proper database in order to monitor the condition change of the structure along time.</p><p>This paper, presents a framework for use of BIM in rehabilitation and assessment of the built heritage, based on the review of recent works, as to allow a better understanding of the potential for the management of important and significant structures. The paper deals with the dilemma of bringing what a “traditional” assessment can see to how intangible information may be applied.</p>

A standard for weight definition and an approach to weight control is presented for modern motor yachts and other craft. This includes a definition of weight and loading conditions for these vessels which can be related to attainable vessel speeds. The weight control plan addresses concept though detail design, construction, delivery and service life. The procedure is adaptable to all types of hull structural material. Weight curves developed from regression of previous vessel data are included and cover a variety of pleasure and commercial craft. Examples of the effect of weight control on speed are given. Recommendations for application of the procedures are offered.

Trade is of great importance for the national economy and society as a whole. Trade enterprises act as providers between producers of consumer goods and consumers, focused on meeting customer demand, account for a significant share in the formation of gross domestic product. Environmental factors affect the conditions and results of the trade enterprise (e.g., pandemic, hostilities, sanctions, etc.). Society's demands for the social responsibility of trade enterprises are changing and becoming more stringent. All this strengthens the responsibility of enterprise management and leads to the introduction of effective management tools. Such a modern management tool is controlling. The views of scientists on defining the essence and meaning of controlling differ. The study is based on the definition of controlling, according to which controlling is considered as a complete, cyclical, comprehensive process of goal setting, planning and control of activities in conjunction with various management systems. Controllers mainly perform two roles in the enterprise: on the one hand, they are internal consultants and management partners and, thus, responsible for achieving goals. On the other hand, controllers are service providers in which they are responsible for providing accurate and relevant information for consulting. As a result, requests for reliable, timely and relevant information are increasing. Information for management decisions is formed in the system of accounting controlling. The political, economic and social course of the country to meet the goals of sustainable development leads to a radical rethinking of management and the transition from a systemic to a process approach to management. In the main processes, the actual added value is generated at the enterprise. They are defined as directly meeting the needs of consumers and include, for example, research and development, production and sales. The set of all major controlling processes can be represented as a model. The formation of accounting support for controlling is appropriate to carry out on the basis of certain basic processes.

AbstractLoosely structured documents can capture more relevant information about medical events than is possible using today’s popular databases. In order to realize the full potential of this increased information content, techniques will be required that go beyond the static mapping of stored data into a single, rigid data model. Through intelligent processing, loosely structured documents can become a rich source of detailed data about actual events that can support the wide variety of applications needed to run a health-care organization, document medical care or conduct research. Abstraction and indirection are the means by which dynamic data models and intelligent processing are introduced into database systems. A system designed around loosely structured documents can evolve gracefully while preserving the integrity of the stored data. The ability to identify and locate the information contained within documents offers new opportunities to exchange data that can replace more rigid standards of data interchange.

Administrative administration is the activity of recording for everything that happens in the organization to be used as information for leaders. While the definition of administration is all processing activities that start from collecting (receiving), recording, processing, duplicating, minimizing and storing all the information of correspondence needed by the organization. Administration is as an activity to determine everything that happens in the organization, to be used as material for information by the leadership, which includes all activities ranging from manufacturing, managing, structuring to all the preparation of information needed by the organization.

With the attainment of secondary treatment by virtually all municipal discharges in the United States, control of water pollution from combined sewer overflows (CSOs) has assumed a high priority. Accordingly, a national strategy was issued in 1989 which, in 1993, was expanded into a national policy on CSO control. The national policy establishes as an objective the attainment of receiving water quality standards, rather than a design storm/treatment technology based approach. A significant percentage of the CSOs in the U.S. are located along the Ohio River. The states along the Ohio have decided to coordinate their CSO control efforts through the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO). With the Commission assigned the responsibility of developing a monitoring approach which would allow the definition of CSO impacts on the Ohio, research by the Commission found that very little information existed on the monitoring and assessment of large rivers for the determination of CSO impacts. It was therefore necessary to develop a strategy for coordinated efforts by the states, the CSO dischargers, and ORSANCO to identify and apply appropriate monitoring approaches. A workshop was held in June 1993 to receive input from a variety of experts. Taking into account this input, a strategy has been developed which sets forth certain approaches and concepts to be considered in assessing CSO impacts. In addition, the strategy calls for frequent sharing of findings in order that the data collection efforts by the several agencies can be mutually supportive and lead to technically sound answers regarding CSO impacts and control needs.

In this paper, Linear Quadratic (LQ) optimal control concepts are applied for the active control of vibrations in helicopters. The study is based on an identified dynamic model of the rotor. The vibration effect is captured by suitably augmenting the state vector of the rotor model. Then, Kalman filtering concepts can be used to obtain a real-time estimate of the vibration, which is then fed back to form a suitable compensation signal. This design rationale is derived here starting from a rigorous problem position in an optimal control context. Among other things, this calls for a suitable definition of the performance index, of nonstandard type. The application of these ideas to a test helicopter, by means of computer simulations, shows good performances both in terms of disturbance rejection effectiveness and control effort limitation. The performance of the obtained controller is compared with the one achievable by the so called Higher Harmonic Control (HHC) approach, well known within the helicopter community.

AbstractThis paper introduces the notions of chained and semi-chained graphs. The chain of a graph, when existent, refines the notion of bipartivity and conveys important structural information. Also the notion of a center vertex $$v_c$$ v c is introduced. It is a vertex, whose sum of p powers of distances to all other vertices in the graph is minimal, where the distance between a pair of vertices $$\{v_c,v\}$$ { v c , v } is measured by the minimal number of edges that have to be traversed to go from $$v_c$$ v c to v. This concept extends the definition of closeness centrality. Applications in which the center node is important include information transmission and city planning. Algorithms for the identification of approximate central nodes are provided and computed examples are presented.

This paper adopted a case study approach to investigate the sustainability practices of a Scottish university in order to understand if sustainability forms part of its central policy agenda. As such, the paper focuses on the levels of awareness and disclosure of their sustainable practices, measuring the impacts and effectiveness of those initiatives. This paper introduces signaling theory to explore the idea that appropriate communication via integrated thinking can close the gap between the organization and its stakeholders. We believe that the provision of this relevant information will lead to better communication between the organization and its stakeholders, supporting a signaling theory interpretation. Therefore, we are suggesting that integrated thinking is an internal process that organizations can follow to increase the level of disclosure as a communication tool with stakeholders. From the literature reviewed, four themes were identified (definition of university sustainability, sustainability awareness, disclosure framework within universities, and level of accountability). The research adopted a pragmatic view and conducted individual interviews with participants belonging to three stakeholder groups (members of the university’s senior management, the governing council, and the student union executive). Although this study focused on just one Scottish university, it should still provide some insight for the better understanding of the underpinning issues surrounding the sustainability accountability practices of Scottish universities in general. The research findings indicated that the university prioritized only two sustainability dimensions—economic and environmental—and that the university still perceived sustainability as a voluntary exercise. Additionally, it is evident that the university had no framework in place for measuring its sustainability delivery—and therefore had no established medium of communicating these activities to its stakeholders. Moreover, research findings showed that the social and educational context of sustainability was lacking at the university. The university has done little or nothing to educate its stakeholders on sustainability.

Reflectance spectroscopy allows cost-effective and rapid mineral characterisation, addressing mineral exploration and mining challenges. Shortwave (SWIR), mid (MIR) and thermal (TIR) infrared reflectance spectra are collected in a wide range of environments and scales, with instrumentation ranging from spaceborne, airborne, field and drill core sensors to IR microscopy. However, interpretation of reflectance spectra is, due to the abundance of potential vibrational modes in mineral assemblages, non-trivial and requires a thorough understanding of the potential factors contributing to the reflectance spectra. In order to close the gap between understanding mineral-diagnostic absorption features and efficient interpretation of reflectance spectra, an up-to-date overview of major vibrational modes of rock-forming minerals in the SWIR, MIR and TIR is provided. A series of scripts are proposed that allow the extraction of the relative intensity or wavelength position of single absorption and other mineral-diagnostic features. Binary discrimination diagrams can assist in rapidly evaluating mineral assemblages, and relative abundance and chemical composition of key vector minerals, in hydrothermal ore deposits. The aim of this contribution is to make geologically relevant information more easily extractable from reflectance spectra, enabling the mineral resources and geoscience communities to realise the full potential of hyperspectral sensing technologies.
