Abstract The present paper is founded on two pillars. Firstly, it is one of the current trends in education worldwide, i.e. to connect theory and practice. Secondly, it is the need to be interculturally competent speakers of a foreign language in today’s globalized world of massive migration flows and signs of increasing ethnocentrism. Based upon these two requirements, the ability to communicate in a FL effectively and interculturally appropriately in the tourism industry is a must, since being employed in whichever of its sectors means encountering other cultures on a daily basis. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to find out undergraduate tourism students’ opinion on the importance of intercultural communicative competences for their future profession as well as their self-assessment in the given field. The findings of the research, which are to be compared to employers’ needs, revealed that there is considerable difference between the respondents’ views on the significance of the investigated issues and their self-esteem.

In the era of information and technology, every people are demanding to master the English language for communication purpose. Nowadays English is widely used for different purpose such as academic, business, diplomacy, news and information, entertainment and others. It proves that the English language has become a basic requirement for students and job seeker in this increasingly globalized world. In order to meet the needs for international communication, Indonesians students need to be proficient in English, especially in oral communication skill. Communication skill is highly needed by students in order to prepare them for their possible further academic career and future workplace. This paper is intended to discuss about classroom discussion. Classroom discussion is one kinds of activity that is done by the teacher in teaching and learning. In this activity, the students will present their opinions to the class. Therefore, the students get the opportunities to speak English well. It also gives valuable experience for them to prepare themselves to use English in multi society where English is a demanding tool for communication in our today’s life.

Durch die Analyse einer Auswahl von interaktionsgeleiteten Aufgaben aus einem Lehrwerk für den Deutschunterricht an Universitätsstudenten wird gezeigt, wie im studienbegleitenden Deutsch- und Fremdsprachenunterricht die Handlungskompetenz in der Zielsprache aufgebaut werden kann. Das Lehrwerk ist als Umsetzungsversuch einer Anzahl von Rahmencurricula für den studienbegleitenden Deutschunterricht entstanden, die während eines seit über zwanzig Jahren laufenden Projekts mit dem Ziel entwickelt wurden, Dozenten und Lehrbuchautoren zu helfen, Studierende auf ihre Zukunft in einer globalisierten Berufswelt vorzubereiten und ihnen durch die Fremdsprache die dafür notwenigen Kompetenzen zu vermitteln.Interaction in cross-faculty foreign language courses for development of communicative competences in tertiary education, work and everyday lifeThrough the analysis of interactional tasks taken from a university course book for teaching German, the paper shows how in this type of course, L2 competence can be radically improved. The course book applies the principles of framework curricula developed over the last twenty years in a cross-faculty language course project involving ten countries, with the aim of supporting university teachers and authors in preparing students in their professional lives in our globalized world.

The improvement in learning English is based on how students are enthusiastic about the subject of English. Learning languages, mainly English, is a great need, even for our primary students who have the responsibility to develop in the globalized world (Muñoz, 2002). These traits are the critical parts of one’s personality because they make him unique, and what psychologists have desired to study and measure in the process of learning English as the foreign or second language. Indeed, the variations between individuals, their learning situations and the contexts where they learn are some features that can illustrate the complexity of learning a foreign language. Conversely, in research on the acquisition of foreign languages, it is essential to consider the differences between individuals, their different ways of learning styles and the environment where they are involved.

Implementing learning or communicative strategies are not enough to develop oral production when learning English as a Foreign language; indeed, it is necessary to provide authentic activities that engage students in the act of speaking. The objective of this research is to know if the interactive activities operated in the Moodle platform promote oral production and identify the possible association between their scores from the instructional design and their speaking level from a standardized exam. For this, a longitudinal quantitative approach was carried out during spring 2020 in the Teaching English Bachelor at BUAP, having a sample of 20 subjects. The results demonstrated that the use of authentic-interactive activities improved the students’ speaking competence significantly. Furthermore, this study pretends to contribute with useful theoretical information for teachers and students who want to select appropriate tasks to improve this competence. It is essential to clarify that this is an innovative study since it promotes the use of activities and strategies mediated by technology asynchronously and synchronously, which are flexible and suitable for students’ needs in times of contingence.

Although cosmopolitanism has a long history, it has become even more relevant in the global era and, especially, since the COVID-19 global pandemic has made communication and understanding across cultures more important than ever. Multilingualism is the essential cosmopolitan skill and tool, empowering those who are proficient in one or more additional languages to understand, and to communicate and interact with others more effectively. The United States suffers from a foreign language deficit, and there is an urgent need to build both motivation and interest in other languages along with sustainable skills in other languages in the US. Steps to effectively address this deficit include prioritizing language learning and use, and providing the opportunity to all interested students to learn one or more additional languages.
