Cognitive linguistics has been aimed at revealing the very nature of language for the last several decades. One of the field’s most significant contributions has been the abstraction of the general patterns, or image schemas, underlying grammatical concepts. In this paper, we propose that English grammar-teaching methods adopting image schema theory offer strong benefits for language teaching. As schematic explanations given to learners are more visible and comprehensible than ordinary verbal-based ones, this method offers a clearer and more engaging way to understand the target grammar. We also present data collected from experiments conducted with more than 400 native Japanese-speaking students at one national and one private university that support the effectiveness of this method.

The web-based collaborative teaching mode is the key to reforming the teaching mode and developing the teaching practice. To improve the traditional English teaching mode, this paper puts forward an innovative English teaching method for elementary, secondary and higher education based on the massive open online course (MOOC) and Google Collaboration platform. The research shows that it is possible for students to learn collaboratively under the guidance of teachers; the students can broaden their horizon by searching for more materials on the online collaboration platform, according to the objectives and themes laid down by the teachers; the proposed innovative English teaching method can improve the learning efficiency of the students, encourage them to participate in learning and collaboration, arouse their interest and enthusiasm in foreign language learning, and help them to gain insights into learning. The research findings provide technical support to the reform and innovation of English teaching mode, and lays a theoretical basis for deepening the reform of teaching methods in various disciplines.

AbstractImage schemas are recognised as a fundamental ingredient in human cognition and creative thought. They have been studied extensively in areas such as cognitive linguistics. With the goal of exploring their potential role in computational creative systems, we here study the viability of the idea to formalise image schemas as a set of interlinked theories. We discuss in particular a selection of image schemas related to the notion of ‘path’, and show how they can be mapped to a formalised family of microtheories reflecting the different aspects of path following. Finally, we illustrate the potential of this approach in the area of concept invention, namely by providing several examples illustrating in detail in what way formalised image schema families support the computational modelling of conceptual blending.

Abstract The present study adopts a context-based approach to the meaning of up. The analysis draws on the notion of “context” defined as a composite of surrounding linguistic cues, world knowledge and physical environment of the utterance, and on a parsimonious criterion of sense establishment. I demonstrate that the proposed model is capable of distinguishing context-sensitive implicatures and senses, with only two separate senses listed: “vertically higher” and “completive”. I propose a developmental hierarchy in the meaning network that refines Hampe’s (2005. When down is not bad, and up not good enough: A usage-based assessment of the plus-minus parameter in image-schema theory. Cognitive Linguistics 16(1). 81–112) challenge to the axiological parameter by unhooking “completive” from “good”. The proposed model finally addresses cases of seeming oxymora to explicate the context-sensitivity of interpretations. The paper concludes with a two-fold implication: first, the context-oriented methodology is capable of distinguishing context-induced implicatures and context-insensitive senses. Second, it captures the details of lexical meaning as contextualization patterns by explicating how the prototypical sense of a spatial particle, undergoing the fine-tuning of linguistic, encyclopedic and physical context, derives diverse contextual implicatures in real use.

Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is an important tool to improve the au-tonomous learning of students and the teaching effects of the courses. Focusing on the online teaching of college English courses, this paper proposes a simple design of blended English teaching mode for the requirements of MOOC plat-form. Using the Model-View-Controller (MVC) framework and the Java pro-gramming language, the author realized the database-related functions of the plat-form by SQL server database, designed the backend server on the Spring and Hibernate integrated frameworks, and developed the entire platform using the browser/server (B/S) structure. The platform test results show that the MOOC-based blended English teaching mode satisfies the teaching demands, achieves stable performance, and wins the recognition of most students. The research find-ings shed new light on the innovation of college English teaching.

The study of conceptual interaction has attracted the attention of many scholars in Cognitive Linguistics. Primarily, the analysis has focused on the role of image-schemas in the construction of metaphors. This study explores the PATH and the CONTAINER image-schemas and the role they play in conceptual formation of metaphors in political discourse in Kenya. The study presents the PATH and its subsidiary image schemas of Verticality, Process and Force-Motion and the CONTAINER image-schema and the subsidiary image-schemas of Excess and In-Out. The analysis reveals that both the PATH and the CONTAINER image-schemas structure the relationship between the source domains (journey and container) and the target domain (politics) by activating subsidiary image-schemas in metaphors of politics in Kenya. The study further reveals that image-schemas provide the axiological value (positive or negative) of metaphorical expressions in political discourse. A positive political environment is a key ingredient for green growth and knowledge economy. The study contributes to the field of metaphor in political discourse by examining the politicians’ conceptualization of politics as a journey, which consists of four structural elements (a source, a destination, contiguous locations which connect the source and the destination and a direction) and as a container, which consists of an interior, an exterior and a boundary. The study used the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) as a tool to establish conceptual metaphors used during the 2005 Draft Constitution referendum campaigns in Kenya and the Image-Schema Theory to account for the presence of image-schemas in political discourse in Kenya. Lakoff and Johnson’s (1980) Conceptual Metaphor Theory is the locus classicus of the image schema theory.

Dealing with phrasal verbs (PV) in TOEFL test is one of challengingpartsfor students. They usually learn PV by heart. Nevertheless, their PV mastery has not improved because implementing “blind” memorizing without knowing the concept is harder and will only stay temporarily. Besides, it cannot solve the unfamiliar PV in TOEFL test. Based on the problems, it needs a particular method to make students do not only understand PV meaning easier but also learn it meaningfully. This research is classroom action research. It aims to investigate the students’ improvement in PV mastery using cognitive linguistics approach. The research objects are beginner level of adult learners in TOEFL Preparation class. The data were collected from observation, interview and written test. Cognitive linguistics approach employed in this research was image schema introduced by Johnson and Lakoff (1987).In image schema concept, PV which has abstract meaning is construed in a concrete visualization of CONTAINER to understand the meaning more easily, practical and fun. By implementing cognitive linguistics approach in teaching PV, teachers activate students’ cognition of PV concept which is basically embodied as it arises from human’s mind and body experience. The result shows that there is significant improvement in students’ PV mastery.

With the advent of the Internet age, network information technology is rapidly entering college English classes, which fundamentally changes the mode of college English teaching. In college English classroom teaching mode, as a brand teaching form, College English multimedia network teaching environment has brought advantages to classroom teaching, but also brought about impacts on teaching concepts, teaching models, teaching methods and other aspects. There are some phenomena that are inconsistent with the reform model at the students, teachers and the environment. The balance of traditional English classroom teaching has been broken, which has affected the smooth progress of college business English classroom teaching mode reform. It is very important to analyze and resolve these imbalances and find ecological methods for optimizing university English education. In this context, the advent of multimedia-assisted education technology has provided better conditions for the implementation of Business English classroom education in universities. Multimedia-powered business English education allows teachers to create a better language learning environment in class more conveniently and quickly, helping students acquire grammar knowledge and achieve their educational objectives.
