This study explored Finnish students’ perceptions of online language courses with the KiVAKO project (KiVAKO is an acronym in Finnish meaning strengthening the language capital at higher education institutions). The aim was to identify and make visible the aspects that need to be taken into account in designing an effective online language course. The research context included eight pilot courses created and implemented within the framework of the KiVAKO project, which seeks to develop a nationwide online language course offering. Language instruction is offered in Chinese, Estonian, Finnish Sign Language, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish on Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) levels A1-C1. The research data consisted of responses to a post-course online questionnaire. The data were analysed according to a qualitative content analysis method. The findings indicate that clearly structured course design, relevant learning materials, appropriate teacher activities, and aligned assignments enhanced the students’ positive learning experiences.

This project was conducted in a five credit course in English as a Foreign Language, which was a compulsory module in first year business administration studies. The data includes students’ learning diaries and a post-course online questionnaire (N=21). The data were analysed using a content analysis method. The results indicate that the students perceived the multimodal task design as enjoyable and students’ engagement was fostered by course design, teacher’s activity, student’s activity, and collaboration.

The concept of inclusive education is considered as a tendency for the development of educational system. The effective implementation of this concept is closely related to the expansion of the professio-nal functions of the teachers. Accordingly, the teachers need professional competence, which allows to respect the educational needs of each student. The phenomenological study, presented in the publication, analyses teachers' associations about inclusive education. In this context, associations are considered as a philosophical-psychological category, which includes a link between the ideas and concepts, recalling their nature and defining their value. The research data is analysed employing a qualitative content analysis method. The results of the study revealed two directions related to the assumptions about inclusive edu-cation: some of the participants link their associations with available or well-known definitions of inclusive education, while some express associations based in their experience.

Abstract Objectives: Problem students is one of the important issues in medical education. This qualitative study aimed to identify the problem students and the ways for managing these students from the educational experts view. Purposive sampling was used, and data collection continued until data saturation was achieved. The participants were 12 higher education experts and policymakers. Data analysis was performed by the content analysis method based on the Heidegger approach.Results: After data analysis, five main themes and 28 categories, and 164 codes were extracted. The reasons for changing a student to a problem students was: student self-regulation skills, multilayer interactions, curriculumfailure, identification policy and supportive solutions. The results indicated that despite revision in the curriculum, there were shortcomings in identification and management of problem students. This study emphasized that we could identify and manage this type of students with the best approach by faculty development, reviewing the faculty member recruitment, strengthening counseling centers, improving the exams, and screening the students on arrival.

PurposeThe housing construction industry is one of the most lucrative sectors for developed countries. However, homebuyers are often vulnerable when left with latent building defects in their new-build house. Many nations have thus implemented new home warranty schemes to protect consumers and stimulate residential production. These warranty programs vary excessively from state to state given the distinct nature of environments. Previous studies have attempted to compare one with another but did not apply a consistent comparative method when doing so. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics defining a new home warranty and to develop a standardised comparative framework.Design/methodology/approachAfter evaluating the characteristics outlined in multiple home warranty programs, a qualitative content analysis method was used to establish coding, categories and themes in order to create the framework. The methodology relied mostly on cross-referencing from academic papers, methodical reviews, government documents and professional consultant reports.FindingsThis paper reviewed warranty schemes from six countries: Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, France and Malaysia. The findings suggest that home warranty programs are defined by five main themes: political involvement; homeowner protection; financial sustainability; quality management; and dispute resolution. At the end, the research created a comparative framework of 101 codes that could be used to accurately measure the efficiency of a home warranty scheme.Originality/valueGathering all defining characteristics of new housing warranties into a unique comparative framework rectifies a gap in the literature. Such a flexible tool will aid future practitioners in the field to undertake comparative case study analysis through qualitative research methods.

Multipurpose products are the artifacts with more than one intended or realized purposes. Abundance of multipurpose products in the market raises interesting questions about the desired customer preferences that lead to success or failure of such products in the market. This study aims to set the premise for developing design guidelines for multipurpose products. The study described in this paper is a qualitative content analysis of reviews of multi-purpose products available from online vendors. A traditional content analysis method is followed, where each sentence from the reviews is coded and categorized by three reviewers. Each category is then carefully analyzed and any redundancies are resolved. Finally, an interrater agreement is achieved between the three coders. The obtained categories shed light on customer expectations from multi-purpose products, their concerns, comments and experiences and their advice from the customer’s viewpoint for the design of such products. Each category identified here shows a potential research direction and a foundation for developing new guidelines for the development of such products.

Mobile learning and connecting development and trends are widely discussed globally. Literature evidences exist confirming mobile learning and its impact on higher education. Mobile learning opportunities can be one option for higher education institutions to reach a dispersed population of the Maldives. Although readiness of mobile learning has been analysed in several counties and contexts, this contributes as the first research on this subject in the Maldives. Therefore this article is intended to find out students' readiness for mobile learning (mLearning) in the higher education institutes of Maldives. Basic readiness and mobile usage readiness of students from three different higher education institutions contributed to the research. A total of 343 institutional students enrolled in flexible delivery programs responded to the online questionnaire survey. Considering the level of programs, cluster sampling technique was used in shaping the sample of the research. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics and SPSS to interpret the findings on student readiness for mobile learning. The findings indicated that the students were confident in using mobile and other mobile devices in daily activities. Also, findings indicated that majority of students were confident with the basic and advanced mobile skills of mobile learning.

This study discusses the positive politeness strategies in Kupang Malay on Facebook social media which are related with the politeness strategy theory  by Brown and Levinson. This research is a qualitative descriptive study with content analysis method. The research data were the status posts/comments in the Kupang Malay language on the Facebook which were selected based on the suitability of the research objectives. The selected data are then collected and analyzed according to theory. As a result, there are 12 strategies used by Facebook users in Kupang Malay namely (1) give sympathy to the interlocutor; (2) exaggerating sympathy for the interlocutor; (3) pay special attention to the interlocutor; (4) increase interest in the interlocutor; (5) use markers that show similarities; (6) seek the approval of the interlocutor; (7) avoid conflict with the interlocutor; (8) presupposes the interlocutor; (9) the strategy of making jokes; (10) strategies for making offers and promises; (11) showing a sense of optimism; and (12) trying to involve the interlocutor. Penelitian ini membahas strategi kesantunan positif dalam bahasa Melayu Kupang pada media sosial Facebook yang dikaitkan dengan teori strategi kesantunan yang dikemukakan oleh Brown dan Levinson. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dengan metode analisis isi (content analysis). Data penelitian adalah tulisan status/komentar dalam bahasa Melayu Kupang pada Facebook yang dipilih berdasarkan kesesuaian terhadap tujuan penelitian. Data yang dipilih kemudian dikumpulkan dan dianalisis sesuai teori. Hasilnya, ada 12 strategi yang digunakan oleh pengguna Facebook berbahasa Melayu Kupang, dan ada 12 strategi yang ditemukan dalam penggunaanya dalam Facebook, yaitu (1) memberikan simpati pada lawan tutur; (2) melebih-lebihkan simpati pada lawan tutur; (3) memberikan perhatian khusus pada lawan tutur; (4) meningkatkan rasa tertarik pada lawan tutur; (5) menggunakan penanda yang menunjukkan kesamaan; (6) mencari dan mengusahakan persetujuan lawan tutur; (7) menghindari pertentangan dengan lawan tutur; (8) mempresuposisikan lawan tutur; (9) strategi membuat lelucon; (10) strategi membuat penawaran dan janji; (11) menunjukkan rasa optimism; dan (12) berusaha melibatkan lawan tutur.

This study investigates the portrayal of women in contemporary Nollywood films, using Isoken (2017) and King of Boys (2018) as case studies. The objective was to highlight the various ways in which women in the films are portrayed to viewers and ascertain whether contemporary Nollywood movies are an improvement on the issues of gender stereotypes and sexism which are hitherto prevalent in the industry. Anchored on the cultivation theory, the study adopted the qualitative content analysis method. Findings showed that women in the studied films are negatively portrayed in various ways and that these portrayals are, at best, parallel to the stereotypical ways in which women were portrayed in previous Nollywood movies. Taking cognizance of the fact that both films are directed by women, the researcher recommends that Nollywood female directors should look beyond the lenses of financial gains and set a pace with regards to changing the narrative and portraying Nigerian women in a positive light.

This study explores the negotiations taking place in LGBTQ families before a child is born or added to the family. It asks who takes part in the negotiations and what issues are negotiated about. An online questionnaire answered by LGBTQ parents (n = 74) was analyzed with qualitative content analysis. The chain of phases leading to having a child can be referred to as a family forming process with various negotiation topics. The four phases are identified as parental desires, consideration of practices, reflecting on the decision, and concrete actions toward having a child. Besides the LGBTQ parents-to-be, significant others such as friends and the family of origin and external others such as donors and fertility clinics took part in the negotiations. Future parents needed to think about their desires in advance to enable fair and equal negotiations.

Purpose: In this article, Mr. Naseem Hijazi, a lesser-known hero of the Pakistan Movement, is highlighted. The primary purpose of this paper is to expose the hidden aspects of Mr. Naseem Hijazi's life. He was a well-known novelist and writer, as well as a freedom fighter. He was a member of the Pakistan Movement, but few people were aware of his involvement. He was a devoted Muslim and a firm believer in Islam. This research paper investigates and analyses the life of Naseem Hijazi to get a complete image of him. Design/Methodology/Approach: This research demonstrates that delving into individual biographies might provide a contextualized view of Naseem Hijazi's life, allowing for a complete picture of him. This study employed a qualitative content analysis method to examine Naseem Hijazi's biography during the Independence Movement. Findings: The finding shows that Naseem Hejazi had a passion for life that could enthrall any of his companions. During a radio interview, Syed Hashim Raza described his relationship with Naseem Hejazi, saying that the Muslim League was the only party working to establish Pakistan between 1940 and 1947. Naseem Hejazi was one of those who stood behind Quaid-e-Azam throughout those times and was respected by all. Naseem Hejazi, I believe, ran half of the pro-Muslim League propaganda effort in Baluchistan, while Mir Jaffer Khan Jamali ran the other half. Quetta's Pasban Fortnightly, June 15 (1939: 6). Implications/Originality/Value: In such a situation, history books about the Pakistan Movement should be rewritten to acknowledge Naseem Hejazi's work as one of the nation's benefactors.”
