Seed plays an important role in agricultural sector for both production and consumption purpose. Availability of vigour seed is one of the major constraints for maximizing crop production. However, healthy seed can also lose its viability during seed storage by changing different physio-chemical properties. Influence of environmental factors and seed containers during storage leading to seed deterioration. In this research, mid storage seed hardening treatment was applied in different aged seeds of jute species (C. Capsularis & C. olitorius) with two types of storage bags. Seed hardening treatment showed the less moisture content with better germination percentage compared to the untreated species of jute seeds. Seed packing in polythene bags during both short and long term seed storages had higher viable seeds compared to the cloth packing seeds. The effect of seed hardening treatment on seed oil content and pattern of oil degradation is distinct in early period of storage. The faster rate of oil degradation, soluble protein and free amino acids was found in seeds of un-treated stored seeds in cloth bag. Contrary, very slow rate of oil degradation was observed in harden seed and stored in polythene bag which indicated better storability of harden seeds.

Storage Potentials and Tolerance of High Protein Maize (HPM) and Quality Protein Maize (QPM) to Seed Storage Pests in Controlled EnvironmentStudies on seed storage were conducted at seed processing and storage section of the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training, Obafemi Awolowo University, Moor Plantation, Ibadan Nigeria in 2007 and 2008, to evaluate High protein maize (HPM) seed for resistance/tolerance to storage insect pest, and assess the resultant effect of seed treatment chemicals on its germination potential. Seeds of HPM variety (ART-98-SW1) and Quality protein maize (QPM) variety (ILE-1-OB) and two varieties of field corn (SUWAN-1-SR and TZPB-SRW) were treated with chemicals, namely Fitscophos™, Actellic 25 EC™, Apron Star™ and combination of Actellic 25 EC and Fitscophos before storing them under controlled environment for six months. The results show that HPM, QPM and field corn require storage chemicals for effective storage, but both QPM and HPM varieties were significantly damaged by storage insect pests compared to field corn varieties regardless of the chemical used. Apron Star effectively reduced infestation by insect pests, but it may bring about significant reduction in seed viability if used for long term storage. Combination of Actellic 25 EC and Fitscophos successfully reduced infestation by insect pests without significant injurious effect on seed viability. Breeding programmes for resistance to storage pests is recommended while long term effects of Apron Star on seed viability needs to be investigated before recommending it for use in HPM/QPM maize varieties.

Sorghum and wheat are the premier food grain crops of the peninsular central India and in particular of Maharashtra. There has been a phenomenal increase in its production after mid sixties with the introduction of high yielding varieties. Increase in production was achieved through increase in area as well as productivity. Inputs like improved seeds, irrigation, fertilizers etc. has given a boost to productivity. Continuous addition of chemical fertilizers poses problems like toxicity due to high amounts of salts as residues of fertilizer and deterioration of the physico-chemical properties. Organic manure ameliorates this problem as organic matter helps in increasing adsorptive power of soil for cations and anions particularly phosphate and nitrate. Long term manuring and fertilizer experiments conducted in India showed declining trend in productivity even with the application of NPK fertilizers under modern intensive farming. Neither organic source alone nor inorganic fertilizers can achieve sustainability in crop production under intensive agriculture, where nutrient turnover in soil-plant system is much higher. However, their combined use appeared promising in enhanced crop productivity besides improving soil fertility.

There are few studies in Botswana which have examined the relationship between agriculture and economic growth. The uniqueness of this study is grounded in investigating disintegrated agriculture components into crop production and livestock production and investigating their nexus with economic growth. This study estimated the short and long term effects between crop production, livestock production and economic growth in Botswana for the period 1990 to 2017. The Auto-Regressive Distributed Lagged (ARDL) bounds testing approach was employed to investigate the stated relationship. Study findings from the ARDL bound testing approach confirm evidence of a long-run equilibrium relationship between crop production, livestock production and economic growth. Results indicated that livestock production has a positive and significant impact on economic growth both in the short run and long run. On the other hand crop production has a positive and significant impact on economic growth only in the long run. Efforts towards supporting agricultural sector growth should be emphasized to promote agricultural sector productivity in a bid to forge a move away from dependence on imports of food in Botswana. To enhance economic growth, in both the short run and long run, the government of Botswana and all relevant stakeholders should invest in and promote livestock production. In the long term, policies that foster crop production are essential for economic growth.

In recent decades, the agricultural sector has witnessed rapid technological interventions from field to the production stage. Thus, the importance of these technological interventions must be strictly evaluated. The traditional statistical method often deems low statistical differences as a significant one, which cannot be considered effective from different perspectives. In this sense, the aim of this research was to develop a new statistical method for evaluating agricultural experiments based on different criteria; hence, the significant importance of the technological interventions can be clearly determined. Data were collected from of a long-term (13-year) crop production experiment (Central Europe, Hungary), which involved five different fertilization levels, along with non-fertilized treatment (control), two irrigation treatments (irrigated and non-irrigated), and 15–20 genotypes of maize. The output of this research showed that the classic statistical approach for testing the significant differences among treatments should be accompanied with our new suggested approach (i.e., professional test), which reflect whether treatments were professionally effective or not. Also, results showed that good statistical background is not enough for interoperating the analysis of agricultural experiments. This research suggested that erroneous conclusions can be avoided by merging classical and professional statistical tests, and correct recommendations could be provided to decision makers and farmers based on their financial resources.

Long-term ex-situ seed storage under controlled conditions in gene banks has become an important tool for conserving threatened Australian plants; however, there is scant information about the seed longevity of most species. The aim of the present study was to determine whether the seed longevity of two contrasting Australian species could be modelled using the seed viability equation, and whether the universal temperature constants are applicable to these species. Seeds of Eucalyptus erythrocorys F.Muell. (Myrtaceae) and Xanthorrhoea preissii Endl. (Xanthorrhoeaceae) were aged at moisture contents ranging from 3.9 to 15.7% and temperatures between –20 and 60°C. Survival data were fitted to the seed viability equation in one step and the species constants for each species determined. Both E. erythrocorys and X. preissii seeds exhibited orthodox seed storage behaviour whose longevity could be modelled using the seed viability equation. The viability constants were KE = 8.81, CW = 4.97, CH = 0.0412 and CQ = 0.000379 for E. erythrocorys and KE = 8.77, CW = 5.29, CH = 0.0382 and CQ = 0.000473 for X. preissii. The universal temperature constants could not be used without a significant increase in error. The storage behaviour of these two Australian species is in keeping with that of orthodox species from around the world. Predictions are that E. erythrocorys will be long-lived under gene bank conditions, whereas X. preissii would be moderately long-lived. Current long-term gene bank storage conditions appear suitable for storage of these species; however, recommendations for short-term storage need to be re-evaluated.

Chinese cork oak (Quercus variabilis) is a widely distributed and highly valuable deciduous broadleaf tree from both ecological and economic perspectives. Seeds of this species are recalcitrant, i.e., sensitive to desiccation, which affects their storage and long-term preservation of germplasm. However, little is known about the underlying molecular mechanism of desiccation sensitivity of Q. variabilis seeds. In this study, the seeds were desiccated with silica gel for certain days as different treatments from 0 (Control) to 15 days (T15) with a gradient of 1 day. According to the seed germination percentage, four key stages (Control, T2, T4, and T11) were found. Then the transcriptomic profiles of these four stages were compared. A total of 4,405, 4,441, and 5,907 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in T2 vs. Control, T4 vs. Control, and T11 vs. Control, respectively. Among them, 2,219 DEGs were overlapped in the three comparison groups. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis showed that these DEGs were enriched into 124 pathways, such as “Plant hormone signal transduction” and “Glycerophospholipid metabolism”. DEGs related to hormone biosynthesis and signal transduction (ZEP, YUC, PYR, ABI5, ERF1B, etc.), stress response proteins (LEA D-29, HSP70, etc.), and phospholipase D (PLD1) were detected during desiccation. These genes and their interactions may determine the desiccation sensitivity of seeds. In addition, group specific DEGs were also identified in T2 vs. Control (PP2C62, UNE12, etc.), T4 vs. Control (WRKY1-like, WAK10, etc.), and T11 vs. Control (IBH1, bZIP44, etc.), respectively. Finally, a possible work model was proposed to show the molecular regulation mechanism of desiccation sensitivity in Q. variabilis seeds. This is the first report on the molecular regulation mechanism of desiccation sensitivity of Q. variabilis seeds using RNA-Seq. The findings could make a great contribution to seed storage and long-term conservation of recalcitrant seeds in the future.

Achieving the optimum moisture content for long-term seed storage usually requires that seeds be dried after receipt at a genebank. Soybean (Glycine max L.) seeds were dried using four procedures: over concentrated H2S O4, over silica gel, at 15% relative humidity (RH), or in an oven at temperatures of 30, 35 and 40C. Following dying seeds were stored at 40C for 10 days and at 5C for one yr. Seeds were evaluated for germination and vigor (root length, dehydrogenase, and leachate conductivity). Initial moisture content (mc) was reduced from 8.3% to between 6.6% (24 hr at 30C) and 4.6% (H2S O4, 30 days). Germination and vigor of seeds was essentially unchanged immediately following the drying treatments. Storage for 10 days at 40C reduced germination by up to 12% while storage for one yr at 5C had a similar effect (14% maximum loss) for most treatments. The treatments having the lowest drop in germination after one yr of storage treatment were the silica gel and the 30C oven treatments, which dropped only 3% in germination. Drying at 15% RH, also resulted in a lower loss in germination. In all three tests, vigor of seeds after storage at 40C was higher than controls for the the silica gel and 15% RH treatments as well as for the 30C and 35C oven treatments. Storage at 5C gave similar results for all three vigor assessments.

The objective of this article is to assess the effect of the agricultural sector on the economic growth in Ivory Coast.The data used are those of the World Bank and cover the period from 1985 to 2015. The analysis of the data required the use of the AutoRegressive Distributed Lag (ARDL). It emerges from this study that there is a positive and significant relationship between manufacturing agriculture and economic growth in the short and long term. On the other hand, the food-crop production has a negative effect on GDP, even if it is significant. The variable of interest such as agricultural investment has a positive and significant effect on economic development, while cash crop production have a positive but not significant effect on long-term economic growth. Therefore, in view of these results, the State must promote the processing of agricultural products in order to create more value added.

This research was performed for a period of three years to determine the effect of natural seed ageing on different physiological and biochemical changes in three extensively cultivated onion cultivars in Northern India. Seed storage studies showed that germination percent, seed viability and other seed quality parameters decreased significantly with increasing storage time. The onion seed can be stored for a maximum period of one year under ambient conditions to maintain required germination percentage (>70%). Overall, Hisar Onion-4 stored better when compared to Hisar Onion-3 and Hisar-2. As the ageing progressed the seed antioxidants, namely superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), dehydrogenase (DHA) and peroxidase (POD) decreased significantly (p < 0.05) in all cultivars whereas, the electrical conductivity (EC) of seed leachates increased significantly. Under the field conditions, seedling establishment percent (SE) onion seed was positively correlated (R2 = 0.98; p < 0.05) with germination percent (GP). Overall, more than one year period of seed storage was associated with poor germination and seedling establishment potential in onion.

Little information is available on phosphorus (P) solubility in long-term cultivated calcareous soils. Improved characterisation of P-containing minerals and soil P species in calcareous soils leads to better management of crop production, water quality and soil quality. In this study, we investigated the solubility relationships of P for 20 surface-soil samples from Hamedan, western Iran, with a wide range of physical and chemical properties. Two equilibration times (0.5 and 168h) were used to evaluate the effect of equilibration times on P activities. We observed up to 67% decrease in mean P concentration when equilibration time was increased from 0.5 to 168h. Solubility diagrams support the stability of hydroxyapatite with 0.5h equilibration and hydroxyapatite and β-tricalcium phosphate with 168h equilibration. Geochemical modelling predicted that dicalcium phosphate, dicalcium phosphate dihydrate and magnesium-P minerals would be unstable and thus would gradually dissolve and supply P in solution in these calcareous soils. The information obtained can be used to predict the behaviour of P and its availability for agricultural crops in calcareous soils.
