This research was performed for a period of three years to determine the effect of natural seed ageing on different physiological and biochemical changes in three extensively cultivated onion cultivars in Northern India. Seed storage studies showed that germination percent, seed viability and other seed quality parameters decreased significantly with increasing storage time. The onion seed can be stored for a maximum period of one year under ambient conditions to maintain required germination percentage (>70%). Overall, Hisar Onion-4 stored better when compared to Hisar Onion-3 and Hisar-2. As the ageing progressed the seed antioxidants, namely superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), dehydrogenase (DHA) and peroxidase (POD) decreased significantly (p < 0.05) in all cultivars whereas, the electrical conductivity (EC) of seed leachates increased significantly. Under the field conditions, seedling establishment percent (SE) onion seed was positively correlated (R2 = 0.98; p < 0.05) with germination percent (GP). Overall, more than one year period of seed storage was associated with poor germination and seedling establishment potential in onion.

An experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of fungicides and packaging materials on longevity of chilli (variety: RCH-1) and brinjal (variety: Hisar Shyamal) seeds. The seeds were treated with 15 fungicides and were kept in three containers viz. Metal box, Cloth bag and Plastic zipling bag up to 12 months under ambient conditions in seed pathology laboratory of Department of Seed Science & Technology, CCSHAU, Hisar, India. The samples were drawn at quarterly intervals for ascertaining the seed quality parameters. The seeds treated with flusilazole and carbendazim (2 g kg-1 seed) in case of chilli and brinjal and stored in metal-box were found better for maintenance of higher seed quality parameters [electrical conductivity and dehydrogenase activity] during the study period. The study suggested that use of appropriate packaging material and seed treatment could be useful to prolong the storage life of chilli and brinjal seeds.

Abstract The effect of cone storage on seed viability during 5 years of storage at 35°F was tested with seeds from studies with loblolly (Pinus taeda L.), slash (P. elliottii Engelm.), longleaf (P. palustris Mill.), and eastern white (P. strobus L.) pines. Results showed that: (1) with the exception of slash pine, seeds from cones stored for the longer periods retained quality during storage better than seeds from cones that were stored only short periods; (2) all species exhibited slight, but statistically significant, decreases in seed quality after 3 years of storage, and with the exception of loblolly, more substantial decreases in germination rate at 5 years; (3) with the exception of eastern white pine, declining rates of germination indicated losses of seed quality at least one year before total percent germination decreased, and (4) slash pine seeds from cones in the center of 20-bushel crates performed better in storage than those from cones at the top of the crates or from cones stored in bags, but storage container made no difference for loblolly. Good quality seeds are one of the least expensive but vital factors influencing yield potential and key to agriculture progress. Studies were conducted both in the field and laboratory with the objective to observe the impact of harvest stage on the seed, quality and storability of French bean. Five harvest stages viz. H1- deep green with light yellow colours of pod, H2-50% green and 50% yellowing of pods, H3-light brown with few yellow colour pods, H4-90% brown colour of pods and H5-100% brown colour and dried pods were considered as treatments for field trial. Harvested seeds were then stored in both cool room and ambient conditions up to 16 months and performed seed quality studies in every 4 months. The treatments combination of laboratory studies were T1: H1 seed storage in cool room (SSCR), T2: H1 seed storage in ambient (SSAB), T3: H2 SSCR, T4: H2 SSAB; T5: H3 SSCR; T6: H3 SSAB; T7: H4 SSCR; T8: H4 SSAB; T9: H5 SSCR and T10: H5 SSAB. Experiments were laid out in a RCBD and CRD in the field and laboratory, respectively. Results revealed that the highest seed yield and quality of French bean was observed in H3. On the contrary, seed harvested in H4 and stored in cool room (with the mean temperature 18-20oC and relative humidity around 60-70%) recorded the highest storability compared to ambient condition. However, seeds harvested in H3 and H5 were also showed better storability in cool room as well as ambient conditions. The study revealed that China aster seeds lose viability quickly if stored under ambient conditions. At the end of 12th months, seeds stored at refrigerated condition (5-70C) still maintained high seed germination (64.00%) at field condition well above the minimum seed certification standards. However, in case of ambient storage very drastic reduction in seed germination was observed. It was 32.43 % for first months and reduced to 14.95 % for second month by declining 53.90% as compared to first month and thereafter no germination was recorded at field condition. Results from the interaction effect indicated that previously stored seeds of China aster for six months in aluminium foil and kept under refrigerated condition recorded higher seed quality parameters viz. percent seed germination at field (92.67 and 72.00%), percent survival of seedlings (89.33 and 70.67%), height of seedling (11.53 and 8.60 cm), shoot length (7.00 and 5.10 cm), root length (4.53 and 3.50 cm), shoot weight (0.42 and 0.33 g), root weight (0.040 and 0.027 g), root:shoot ratio (0.095 and 0.082) and percent seed germination at laboratory (97.33 and 76.00%) for first and sixth month, respectively.

An attempt was made to predict the relative storability of seeds of soybean varieties (JS-335 and DSB-21) through accelerated ageing technique in comparison with that of natural ageing where both the varieties had similar initial germination (93 %). The seeds were subjected to accelerated ageing conditions at 41 oC temperature and 95 ± 5 per cent relative humidity up to 180 hours. While, for natural ageing, the seeds were packed in cloth bag with the initial moisture of 9.5 per cent and stored under ambient conditions. The experimental results revealed that with the subsequent increase in accelerated ageing duration from 24 hours onwards up to 180 hours, the seed quality parameters viz., seed germination percentage, mean germination time, seedling vigour index and dehydrogenase enzyme activity decreased significantly. While the electrical conductivity increased significantly. When the accelerated ageing results were compared with that of natural ageing, accelerated ageing for 132 hours (67 % germination) was nearly equal to nine months of natural ageing (69 % germination) in case of JS-335 whereas in DSB-21, 144 hours of accelerated ageing (70 % germination) was equal to nine months of natural ageing (70 % germination). Hence, the accelerated ageing test can be used to predict the relative storability of soybean seeds. Hence, the seed producers can take decision regarding which seed lot can be stored for longer time and which one should be immediately sold to the market without any compromise in seed quality. It also helps in taking other management decisions.

Seed plays an important role in agricultural sector for both production and consumption purpose. Availability of vigour seed is one of the major constraints for maximizing crop production. However, healthy seed can also lose its viability during seed storage by changing different physio-chemical properties. Influence of environmental factors and seed containers during storage leading to seed deterioration. In this research, mid storage seed hardening treatment was applied in different aged seeds of jute species (C. Capsularis & C. olitorius) with two types of storage bags. Seed hardening treatment showed the less moisture content with better germination percentage compared to the untreated species of jute seeds. Seed packing in polythene bags during both short and long term seed storages had higher viable seeds compared to the cloth packing seeds. The effect of seed hardening treatment on seed oil content and pattern of oil degradation is distinct in early period of storage. The faster rate of oil degradation, soluble protein and free amino acids was found in seeds of un-treated stored seeds in cloth bag. Contrary, very slow rate of oil degradation was observed in harden seed and stored in polythene bag which indicated better storability of harden seeds.

The continuous rise in global population demands more food production under limited land resources accompanied by climate change. More oversupply of quality seeds to meet ever-growing food demand is a highly challenging task. Seeds with low vigour level limit the growth and yield of crops at varied field conditions. Hence, an experiment was conducted to develop a technique for the fast and homogeneous growth of kabuli chickpea seeds. The priming treatments evaluated in the present study enhanced the various seed quality parameters of kabuli chickpea significantly when compared to control. Hydro-priming for 4 hours (at 20°C) and air drying for 72 hours showed better results compared to rest of the treatments both in fresh seeds which recorded higher first count (66.38%), germination (92.50%) root length (11.85 cm), shoot length (6.16), mean seedling length (18.01), dry seedling weight (747 mg), seedling vigour index-I (1665), higher speed of emergence (0.3992) and old seeds with higher first count (61.88%), germination (74.13%) root length (8.15 cm), shoot length (5.85 cm), mean seedling length (14.00 cm), seedling dry weight (611 mg), seedling vigour index-I (1056), higher speed of emergence (0.3814). The aged seeds have recorded 29 % increase in germination percentage in contrast to 8 percent increases in fresh seeds. Kabuli chickpea seeds could be subjected to hydropriming, an affordable, alternative, and eco-friendly technique for improving seed and seedling vigour of kabuli chickpea.

Seeds of 20 pigeon pea (<em>Cajanus cajan </em>(L.) Millsp.) genotypes were evaluated for seed longevity and vigour under humid ambient conditions. Cleaned seeds of each genotype were packed into a polyethylene bag, the packaged lot was electrically sealed and thereafter placed in a seed store under ambient conditions (30 ºC, RH 75 %). Seed samples were withdrawn at 0, 60, 120, 180 and 240 days after storage for seed quality parameters evaluation. The experiment consisted of two factors which were genotype and storage duration and was a laid out in a completely randomized design with three replications. Data were collected on rate of seed germination, seed viability, seedling length, seedlings fresh mass, seedlings dry mass and seedling vigour index. Data collected were subjected to analysis of variance and significant treatment means were separated using Tukey’s HSD test at 5 % probability level. PROBIT modelling was also used to predict the seed longevity of stored pigeon pea. Significant differences were observed in all seed quality attributes evaluated among the 20 pigeon pea genotypes and storage time except seedling fresh mass. Seed quality attributes decreased significantly with increasing storage periods. Genotypes NSWCC-18A, NSWCC-24, NSWC-34 and NSWCC-29A were identified to be superior for most of the seed quality attributes evaluated. PROBIT modelling result revealed that genotype NSWCC-29b had the highest storage life (16.28 months) and the highest storage potentials in terms of seed viability and other seed quality attributes of all seed lots.

Gliricidia sepium is a drought-tolerant species, easily multiplied by seeds, and has been exploited by farmers as a source of forage in the semi-arid region of northeast Brazil. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of seed storage on the mobilization of reserves during imbibition of "Gliricidia" seeds. Freshly-harvested seeds were packed in kraft paper bags and stored for three and six months in the laboratory under ambient conditions (25 º C ± 3 T and 75% ± 3 RH). Cotyledons were isolated from imbibed seeds and macerated for the extraction and quantification of total soluble sugars, reducing sugars, sucrose and starch, as well as of proteins, amino acids and for amylase activity. Storage under these conditions resulted in an increase in seed water content although germination remained at relatively high levels (86%). Seed macromolecule levels showed significant variation with the storage period and imbibition and these variations were associated with a loss in seed viability due to inadequate storage conditions.
