A multidimensional analysis of the state of Russian studies on the education issues over 1993–2016 was carried out based on the materials of the data contained in the Web of Science (SSCI, A & HCI and SCI-E databases). There were determined the dynamics and trends of a number of relevant indicators, such as the number of Russian publications by year, the share of these publications in the global flow of publications on education issues, the dynamics of the share of publications made in co-authorship with foreign colleagues, etc. A number of distributions of Russian publications on educational issues was compiled and analyzed: by journals, by Russian regions and cities, by organizations and authors of the publications. It was found that most of these distributions were characterized by a high level of non-uniformity. A list of journals (125 titles) in which Russian works on education issues had been published was compiled. Russian organizations (308) and domestic researchers (about two thousand) engaged in studying the issues of education were identified. It was discovered that more than 200 organizations and about 400 academicians from 60 foreign countries had participated in Russian studies on the education issues.

When we perform particle-based water simulation, water particles are often increased dramatically because of particle splitting around breaking holes to maintain the thin fluid sheets. Because most of the existing approaches do not consider the volume of the water particles, the water particles must have a very low mass to satisfy the law of the conservation of mass. This phenomenon smears the motion of the water, which would otherwise result in splashing, thereby resulting in artifacts such as numerical dissipation. Thus, we propose a new fluid-implicit, particle-based framework for maintaining and representing the thin sheets and turbulent flows of water. After splitting the water particles, the proposed method uses the ghost density and ghost mass to redistribute the difference in mass based on the volume of the water particles. Next, small-scale turbulent flows are formed in local regions and transferred in a smooth manner to the global flow field. Our results show us the turbulence details as well as the thin sheets of water, thereby obtaining an aesthetically pleasing improvement compared with existing methods.

A fluid flow through an ∊-periodic array of obstacles distributed on a hypersurface (filter) is considered. The study of the asymptotic behavior as ∊→0 for two critical sizes of obstacles ∊ and ∊2 gives two different laws describing a global flow. In this paper we study the case of an intermediate obstacle size ∊β, 1 < β < 2 and we prove the continuity of the filtration law in the low-volume fraction limit.

The time-averaged flow dynamics of a suspended cylindrical canopy patch with a bulk diameter of $D$ is investigated using large-eddy simulations (LES). The patch consists of $N_{c}$ constituent solid circular cylinders of height $h$ and diameter $d$, mimicking patchy vegetation suspended in deep water ($H/h\gg 1$, where $H$ is the total flow depth). After validation against published data, LES of a uniform incident flow impinging on the canopy patch was conducted to study the effects of canopy density ($0.16\leqslant \unicode[STIX]{x1D719}=N_{c}(d/D)^{2}\leqslant 1$, by varying $N_{c}$) and bulk aspect ratio ($0.25\leqslant AR=h/D\leqslant 1$, by varying $h$) on the near-wake structure and adjustment of flow pathways. The relationships between patch geometry, local flow bleeding (three-dimensional redistribution of flow entering the patch) and global flow diversion (streamwise redistribution of upstream undisturbed flow) are identified. An increase in either $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}$ or $AR$ decreases/increases/increases bleeding velocities through the patch surface area along the streamwise/lateral/vertical directions, respectively. However, a volumetric flux budget shows that a larger $AR$ causes a smaller proportion of the flow rate entering the patch to bleed out vertically. The global flow diversion is found to be determined by both the patch geometrical dimensions and the local bleeding which modifies the sizes of the patch-scale near wake. While loss of flow penetrating the patch increases monotonically with increasing $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}$, its partition into flow diversion around and beneath the patch shows a non-monotonic dependence. The spatial extents of the wake, the flow-diversion dynamics and the bulk drag coefficients of the patch jointly reveal the fundamental differences of flow responses between suspended porous patches and their solid counterparts.

The question of place is becoming more important in an increasingly globalised, cosmopolitan world. Has the global flow of culture and the movement of people around the world meant a decline in the importance of place as a form of identity? Have local, regional and national identities lost their significance for people? The article begins to explore these key issues. In particular it looks at Ireland which, from the 1990s, moved from being relatively insular and homogeneous to becoming one of the most globalised societies. The authors use a mixed method approach. First they examine data from the International Social Survey Project (ISSP) to see if there is any evidence of a decline in identity with place, how this varies between rural and urban dwellers, and levels of age and education. They then use findings from a qualitative study to examine the complex ways in which people talk about and identify with place, where they were brought up, where they live now and being Irish. The findings show that level of identity with place is still strong in Ireland and in some cases is increasing. The authors argue that increased identification with the local is an equal and opposite reaction to globalisation.
