Abstract This paper presents the possibilities of forming the microstructure as well as mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of Cu-3Ti alloy (wt.%) in thermal and thermomechanical processes that are a combination of homogenising treatment, hot and cold working, solution treatment and ageing. Phase composition of the alloy following various stages of processing it into the specified semi-finished product was being determined too. It was demonstrated that the application of cold plastic deformation between solution treatment and ageing could significantly enhance the effect of hardening of the Cu-3Ti alloy without deteriorating its electrical conductivity. It was found that for the investigated alloy the selection of appropriate conditions for homogenising treatment, hot and cold deformation as well as solution treatment and ageing enables to obtain the properties comparable to those of beryllium bronzes.

Effect of cold plastic deformation prior to ageing at 180°C on a microstructure and mechanical properties at room temperature for an AA2519 alloy was examined subjected to solution treatment and water quenching initially. It was found that cold rolling with a reduction of 15% or equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) up to a true strain of ~1 leads to acceleration of age-hardening response of this alloy. Peak hardness values of 127, 175 and 169 HV0.2were achieved by ageing following quenching, cold rolling and ECAP, respectively. The highest values of yield stress (YS) of 475 MPa and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 520 MPa, were attained after ECAP followed by ageing. The effect of cold plastic deformation prior to ageing on the precipitation behavior and its relation with mechanical properties of the AA2519 is discussed.

The present paper analyzed the microstructural characteristics and the mechanical properties of a Ti–Nb–Zr–Fe–O alloy of β-Ti type obtained by combining severe plastic deformation (SPD), for which the total reduction was of etot = 90%, with two variants of super-transus solution treatment (ST). The objective was to obtain a low Young’s modulus with sufficient high strength in purpose to use the alloy as a biomaterial for orthopedic implants. The microstructure analysis was conducted through X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) investigations. The analyzed mechanical properties reveal promising values for yield strength (YS) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of about 770 and 1100 MPa, respectively, with a low value of Young’s modulus of about 48–49 GPa. The conclusion is that satisfactory mechanical properties for this type of alloy can be obtained if considering a proper combination of SPD + ST parameters and a suitable content of β-stabilizing alloying elements, especially the Zr/Nb ratio.

Due to low density and good mechanical properties, aluminium alloys are widely applied in transportation industry. Moreover, they are characterized by the specific physical properties, such as high electrical conductivity. This led to application of the hypoeutectic Al-Si-Mg alloys in the power generation industry. Proper selection of the alloys chemical composition is an important stage in achievement of the demanded properties. The following paper presents results of the research on the influence of alloys chemical composition on their properties. It has been revealed that Si and Ti addition decreases electrical conductivity of the Al-Si-Mg alloys, while Na addition increases it. The mechanical properties of the investigated alloys are decreased by both silicon and iron presence. Sodium addition increases ductility of the Al-Si-Mg alloys.

Electrical conductivity, tensile strength and micro-hardness of Cu-3.5wt.%Ti-0.1wt.%Zr-RE alloy were investigated after optimizing technics of plastic deformation and the heat treatment. The results show that good combination of the physical and mechanical properties, such as tensile strength 1160 MPa, micro-hardness 335 Hv and electrical conductivity 15 IACS% can be obtained on peak aging at 420°C for 7 h. Maximum strength was associated with the precipitation of metastable, ordered and coherent β/ (Cu4Ti) phase on peak aging. Then the strength decreased due to the precipitation of β (Cu3Ti) phase in alloys overaged.

Copper-based microcomposites fabricated by powder metallurgy with subsequent plastic deformation have received increasing attention over recent years. These microcomposites possess good electrical conductivity in combination with high mechanical properties. The present study aims to explore potential technical merits in developing a prealloyed powder metallurgy copper based composites with silica sand nanoparticles reinforcement. Relevant mechanical properties and electrical conductivity improvements are the main targets. A copper based composite with 5, 10, 15 and 20 wt.% of silica sand nanoparticles were developed through the powder metallurgy process. It was observed that by addition of silica sand nanoparticles with 20% increased the hardness up to 143HV. Optimum electrical conductivity of the composites was achieved in the 15 wt.% silica sand nanoparticles. Advanced particle rearrangement mechanism due to homogeneous and fine distribution of silica sand nanoparticles into pore sites of the composites was also observed. The silica sand nanoparticles composites properties that are much more surface-related seen to be improved convincingly compared with the bulk controlled.

Taking into consideration increased quantity of accessories used in modern cars, decreasing car’s weight can be achieved solely by optimization of sections of sheets used for bearing and reinforcing elements as well as for body panelling parts of a car. Application of sheets with lower thickness requires using sheets with higher mechanical properties, however keeping adequate formability. The goal of structural elements such as frontal frame side members, bumpers and the others is to take over the energy of an impact. Therefore, steels that are used for these parts should be characterized by high value of UTS and UEl, proving the ability of energy absorption. Among the wide variety of recently developed steels, high-manganese austenitic steels with low stacking faulty energy are particularly promising, especially when mechanical twinning occurs. Beneficial combination of high strength and ductile properties of these steels depends on structural processes taking place during cold plastic deformation, which are a derivative of SFE of austenite, dependent, in turn on the chemical composition of steel and deformation temperature. High-manganese austenitic steels in effect of application of proper heat treatment or thermo-mechanical treatment can be characterized by different structure assuring the advantageous connection of strength and plasticity properties. Proper determinant of these properties can be plastic deformation energy supply determined by integral over surface of cold plastic deformation curve. Obtaining of high strength properties with retaining the high plasticity has significant influence for the development of high-manganese steel groups and their significance for the development of materials engineering.

The microstructural features and heat treatment response of Cu-2.1Ni-0.5Si-0.2Zr-0.05Cr (wt.%) alloy have been investigated. The alloy was aged at 400°C、450°C and 500°C after a cold deformation of 70% reduction. The variation in hardness and electrical conductivity of the alloy was measured as a function of aging time. The results indicated the highest peak hardness value of approximately 205HV for the alloy aged at 400°C for 4h after the solution treatment and cold deformation. The alloy has two main phases, one is Ni2Si phase, and the other is Cr2Zr phase. The strengthening mechanisms of the alloy include spinodal decomposition strengthening, ordering strengthening and precipitation strengthening.

Specialists of metallurgy and mechanical engineering are intensively working at materials with controlled properties. In fact, at this stage we are already talking about the design of new materials for the specific tasks of the industry. One of the ways to achieve the regulated mechanical properties of metal products is to use the influence of plastic deformation with its different parameters in individual sections of the deformable material. In this study, we studied the effect of cold rolling on the properties of a strip of aluminum alloy EN AW-1050 with artificially created differences in the deformation parameters in different parts of the cross section of the profile. For this, a pre-shaped sample was prepared by conducting joint cold rolling of a strip of the specified material 420 mm long, 180 mm wide and 2.9 mm thick with a steel profiling tape 80 mm wide and 2 mm thick superimposed on it (length of an aluminum strip and steel profiling tape are the same). As a result of joint deformation, the steel strip rolled into the base metal and changed the geometry of the cross section and the properties of the obtained strip. Next, the obtained strip was subjected to heat treatment and rolled in a duo mill. After rolling, thin samples were made from fabricated flat strips to assess mechanical properties, in particular tensile tests were performed according to ISO 6892-1: 2009 and Brinell hardness tests were performed according to ISO 6506-1: 2014. Experimental studies of cold rolling of strips with profiled cross section of aluminum alloy EN AW-1050 were carried out. The possibility of forming heterogeneous properties in a flat aluminum strip by cold plastic deformation is shown and the maximum average values of the increase in the main indicators of mechanical properties on individual elements of the strip are determined. The maximum difference between the mechanical properties of the thick and thin elements of the profiled strip is observed in the hardness index and reaches 37.5%. The maximum obtained average value of the increase in yield strength and tensile strength is 26% and 18%, which is achieved with true deformation of the thick element of the profiled strip 0.165 and 0.234.
