Abstract Demographic problems, obsolescence of existing buildings, unstable economy, as well as misunderstanding of the mechanism that turn city quarters into areas in need for intervention result in the implementation of improvement measures that prove inadequate. The paper puts forward an algorithm of revitalization program for housing developments and presents its implementation. It also showed the effects of periodically run (10 years) three-way diagnostic tests in correlation with the concept of settlement management.

In 2004, in response to France’s 1960s and 1970s urban regeneration program proposing the demolition and redevelopment of large scale social housing developments, Frédérik Druot, Anne Lacaton, and Jean-Philippe Vassal created their PLUS theory (PLUS—Les grands ensembles de logements–Territoires d’exception). Its main aim was to modernize the existing buildings, and to add extra living space, functional freedom, and comfort. This essay examines the PLUS strategy and two of the architects’ projects: the Bois le Prêtre Tower in Paris and the Grand Parc housing estate in Bordeaux. Its aim is to examine the tools used by the architects and investigate the purposefulness and potential of using their solutions in Polish large-scale prefabricated housing estates. Combining the categories of luxury and saving in redevelopment of housing estates paves the way for a new outlook. Maximizing living space, quality, and freedom of living in housing facilities that are not part of the commercial luxury segment of the housing market may prevent potential gentrification and homogenization of the social structure in individual city districts.

LARGE HOUSING DEVELOPMENTS IN THE CITY OF UBERLÂNDIA – MGGRANDES EMPRENDIMIENTOS HABITACIONALES EN LA CIUDAD DE UBERLÂNDIA – MGO presente artigo busca demostrar e equiparar algumas formas de ocupação do espaço territorial urbano, onde os empreendimentos imobiliários, em parcerias com o Governo Federal, trazem para os municípios os conjuntos habitacionais, que comtemplam principalmente a população de baixa renda. Este trabalho objetiva analisar os empreendimentos habitacionais de interesse social implantados ao longo de décadas na cidade de Uberlândia, os quais implicam grandes efeitos na conjuntura urbana da cidade. Utiliza-se, como metodologia principal, pesquisas de arquivos da Prefeitura Municipal de Uberlândia, tendo como resultado o número de famílias atendidas pelos programas de habitação popular, o que traz a lume o grande valor da expansão das políticas públicas em relação à casa própria. In case of progressive degradation of the natural environment, more emphasis is put on the actions which would minimize the humanity’s negative influence on the environment. An attempt to answer ecological issues is the concept of sustainable development which assumes permanent development of humanity but not at the expense of the natural environment. Nowadays environmentally friendly solutions are frequently used in modern residential buildings. However major challenge is to adapt existing buildings to contemporary requirements. Especially demanding problems are large housing estates built in socialism which dominated the structure of Polish cities before the propagation of sustainable development principles. Research problem of this article is a question: can blocks of flats develop in a sustainable way? In order to answer this question a research based on a methodology by Beata Komar1 through the example of Radogoszcz-East – housing complex located in Łódź was conducted. The object of this study was appraisal of particular aspects of sustainable development (ecological, economic, social and cultural) with reference to block of flats. Additional materials to this analysis were questionnaires for inhabitants about the quality of life in this area.

This study attempts to assess housing developments on the island of Cyprus by referring to the various actions taken and policies implemented during different periods as a result of changing socio-economic and political dynamics. From this perspective, the methodology of the study is based on an assessment of housing developments throughout periods which coincide with certain socio-political thresholds in the history of the island, such as the year 1974, which resulted in the division of the island into two as Northern and Southern parts, and the year 2004, in which the overall setting is changed as Southern part of the island became member of EU. The overall developments and transformations in housing developments are considered as a mirror image of the actors, actions and associations in building activity throughout the periods referred to in this paper. Nicosia as the capital city of the island, has experienced different spatial transformations, and is comprised of a diversity of housing schemes ranging from the low cost housing units of urban workers, located next to the centers of traditional employment, to the large refugee housing estates and to the institutionalized social housing settlements. In this regard, the study aims to understand, interpret and learn from past experiences in the field of housing developments in order to provide lessons which will serve to support future sustainable living environments, since the current situation is at a critical point, and is currently requiring the interest and attention of the responsible authorities.

Both psychotherapists and their clients have mental representations of old age and the aging process. In this conceptual review, we draw on available research from gerontology, social and developmental psychology, and communication science to consider how these “images of aging” may affect the psychotherapeutic process with older clients. On the basis of selected empirical findings we hypothesize that such images may affect the pathways to psychotherapy in later life, therapist-client communication, client performance on diagnostic tests as well as how therapists select and apply a therapeutic method. We posit that interventions to help both older clients and therapists to reflect on their own images of aging may increase the likelihood of successful treatment. We conclude by making suggestions for future research.

SummaryAntiplatelet therapy has demonstrated significant clinical benefit in the treatment of acute coronary syndrome. However, as with any treatment strategy it has been unable to prevent all cardiovascular events. This is far from surprising when considering the complexity of arterial thrombosis and more specifically platelet physiology. This lack of treatment success has provoked the introduction of various diagnostic tests and testing platforms with the intent of guiding and optimizing clinical treatment. Such tests have resulted in the generation of clinical data that suggest suboptimal response to antiplatelet agents such as aspirin and clopidogrel.In the case of both aspirin and clopidogrel, this suboptimal response has been termed resistance. Drug resistance would imply a lack of pharmacological response that has not been specifically investigated in many of the clinical studies performed to date. Rather, the term resistance has been used to describe various facets of platelet activation and aggregation relative to the testing method. Many of these measured parameters are not addressed in the therapeutic intent of the antiplatelet drug in question.

Abstract:The problem of deciding the optimal sequence of diagnostic tests can be structured in decision trees, but unmanageable bushy decision trees result when the sequence of two or more tests is investigated. Most modelling techniques include tests on the basis of gain in certainty. The aim of this study was to explore a model for optimizing the sequence of diagnostic tests based on efficiency criteria. The probability modifying plot shows, when in a specific test sequence further testing is redundant and which costs are involved. In this way different sequences can be compared. The model is illustrated with data on urinary tract infection. The sequence of diagnostic tests was optimized on the basis of efficiency, which was either defined as the test sequence with the least number of tests or the least total cost for testing. Further research on the model is needed to handle current limitations.
