SummaryNot only that consumers take it often for granted that product prices are good indicators of product quality, but also many experts in consumer economics expect a high positive price-quality relationship. However, for more than 50 years numerous studies in more than 10 countries all over the world have shown low price-quality correlation coefficients, mostly close to 0.2. These results have been interpreted twofold: (a) consumers cannot use prices as valid indicators of quality and (b) markets do not function well. In contrast to the second interpretation, this paper argues that, according to the economic theory of price formation, prices are not an indicator of quality, but an indicator of scarcity. This allows the conclusion that workable consumer goods markets, as seen from a welfare point of view, should be characterized by low or even negative correlations between price and objective quality rather than by strong positive coefficients. All the more it is the availability of valid information about product quality which is necessary to enable consumers to avoid inefficient product choices.

AbstractIn Nakuru, a secondary city in Kenya, herbal doctors argue that African bodies are infested by ‘dirt’. Gathering at crossroads, they teach about the dangerous effects of processed foods on African bodies. During public product demonstrations, they patch together urban gossip, kemikali (chemicals in Kiswahili) and consumer goods from abroad to demonstrate their overheating effects on stomachs. In this article, I think through metabolism and digestion to demonstrate how ‘navigating’ urban toxicity in Nakuru implies a bodily praxis that hinges on debates about the porosity of the nation's borders responding to the afflictions of globalization. I show how the occult character of kemikali pivots on the collapse between insides and outsides, leading to overheating stomachs, and consequently argue that herbal interventions coating the lining of the stomach and the gut do what national borders are unable to achieve: keeping out toxic intrusions. From this point of view, herbal practices in Nakuru demonstrate agency and resistance to worlds perceived as increasingly toxic and polluted.

Abstract The application of flexural joints in mechanisms has a number of advantages. Extreme repeatability of position is obtained because of the absence of backlash and friction. From a tribological point of view, no lubrication is needed and no wear exists. In many cases their application gives rise to a low cost assembly. Flexural elements have their particular drawbacks as well. Deflections are limited; only oscillating motions can be performed and work has to be done as a consequence of the elastic deflection. Flexural fatigue sets another limit to their application. The paper gives an overview of a design methodology that has been developed at the Philips Center for Industrial Technology by the author and his colleagues over the last several decades. Some aspects of this methodology are well known; other aspects are unique. The methodology is described in detail in a book by the author about design principles (Koster 1998). The methodology has been used to design hundreds of practical mechanisms incorporated in scientific instruments, manufacturing equipment and consumer goods. Many examples are given in (Koster 1998). Several interesting examples are given in this paper.

Oaks are among the most important broad-leaved species in Romanian forests from both an economic and socio-ecological point of view. A significant decline of these species has been observed, which was first evident in various studies and investigations followed by the more results of interdisciplinary research performed in intensive monitoring plots (level II) showing that the decline is climate induced. Thus, it is important to understand the climate change conditions and factors that influence Quercus spp. Typical dendroclimatological investigations were conducted on an intensive forest monitoring network based on four oak species (Q. robur, Q. petraea, Q.cerris, and Q. frainetto) in 7 permanent plots placed in southern Romania. Three patterns of climate-growth relationships were identified and discerned in accordance with the Quercus species. All oak species were found to have a positive correlation with the level of precipitation. In addition, the intensity and level of significance of correlation coefficients differ from one species to another and from one region to another.

The aim of the study is to examine the effect of technology Orientation characteristics (commitment R & D, technology acquisition and technology application) and dummy variable to product quality  of Consumer Goods Companies in Surabaya. The population of the study is all Consumer goods (food and beverage companies), which are operated until the end of 2010, and located in Surabaya Industrial Estate Rungkut (SIER), the companies also joined in GAPMMI of East Java branch and received facilities from East Java Board of Investment. This research employs complete enumeration since the number of  population is relatively small (29 food and beverage companies), where as the analysis tool is multiple linier regression analysis with independent variable which are quantitative and qualitative (dummy variable). Multiple linier regression is used to analyse the effect of technology orientation characteristics that reflect three factors on product quality. Dummy variable is used to analyse the differences of product quality of Consumer Goods campanies with go public status and without go public status. The test results shows either simultaneously or parsial,  indicates that the variable of technology Orientation characteristics consisting of commitment R & D, technology acquisition and technology application have a  significant effect on product quality of Consumer Goods companies. And the result also show that product quality of consumer goods companies with go public status is higher than product quality of the consumer goods companies without go public status.

In Scandinavia we have for two decades been concerned with participation and skill in the design and use of computer-based systems. Collaboration between researchers and trade unions on this theme, starting with the pioneering work of Kristen Nygaard and the Norwegian Metal Workers’ Union, and including leading projects like DEMOS and UTOPIA, has been based on a strong commitment to the idea of industrial democracy. This kind of politically significant, interdisciplinary, and action-oriented research on resources and control in the processes of design and use has contributed to what is often viewed abroad as a distinctively Scandinavian approach to systems design. This Scandinavian approach might be called a work-oriented design approach. Democratic participation and skill enhancement, and not only productivity and product quality, are themselves considered objective of design. [Based on the two research projects, DEMOS and UTOPIA, I have elaborated this approach in detail in Work-Oriented Design of Computer Artifacts (1989). This paper is based on that work.] Two important features of participatory design shape its trajectory as a design strategy. The political one is obvious. Participatory design raises questions of democracy, power, and control in the workplace. In this sense it is a deeply controversial issue, especially from a management point of view. The other major feature is technical—its promise that the participation of skilled users in the design process can contribute importantly to successful design and high-quality products. Some experiences, perhaps most developed in Scandinavia, support this prediction and contribute to the growing interest in participatory design in the United States and other countries; by contrast, “expert” design strategies have too often turned out to be failures in terms of the usability of the resulting systems. These two features together suggest that there should be a strong link between the skill and product quality aspect of user participation and the democracy and control aspect, or else participatory design will be a deeply controversial issue from the point of view of the employees and trade unions. The trade-union-oriented democracy aspect of skill and participation in design is discussed in the first part of the chapter.

Purpose: The studies on consumer behavior on the market should take into account not only the criteria of product choices, but also the factors determining the choice of the place of purchase. The purpose of the paper is to assess the knowledge about the factors influencing the consumer choices with respect to a beauty parlor on the part of owners and managers offering cosmetic services in parlors located in Kraków and in other cities of the Małopolska Province. The significance of individual factors was assessed. Methodology: A diagnostic survey method was used for the study. An interview questionnaire comprising 51 questions was used as the research tool. The research was carried out with the use of PAPI (Paper and Pen Interview). 298 correctly completed questionnaire were qualified for statistical analyses. The choice of companies was non-random, purposeful and depended on their location in the area of Kraków and the Małopolska Province. Findings: The received results show which factors – according to the owners and managers – guide consumers in their choices of a beauty parlor. Research limitations: When analyzing the generalizing conclusions, caution should be exercised as to uncertainty with respect to the validity of the population list in the address database purchased for the study purposes from an external company. However, attempts were made to make the study representative, yet certain caution should be exercised during the generalization of the findings with respect to the entire population. Implications: Identification of factors determining the choice of a place of purchase of services is valid especially from the point of view of companies operating at a competitive market. Skillful use of knowledge on the consumer behavior often determines the efficiency of actions and the success of an enterprise. Originality: The paper presents a fragment of analysis of data procured as part of broad research of the market of beauty services in the area of Kraków and the neighborhood. At the present moment, a limited number of scientific publications about the market of beauty services is available, both in the national and regional approach.

This paper contains main principles of function-oriented analysis. This approach may be used to estimate the product quality from the point of view of its consumer properties. The object and its components are studied in terms of the functions they fulfill, which corresponds to the degree of satisfaction of the customer requirements (or expectations). It makes possible to find out the relation between the consumer functions and the product properties and determines the practical ways of quality improvement. It is proved that the function-oriented analysis can be used efficiently for both current metal products and for research and design of up-to-date engineering and manufacturing systems.

Physical activity (PA) is a component of total energy expenditure. PA and PA energy expenditure (PAEE) can be estimated by objective techniques (OTs). However, the use of questionnaires is frequent in clinical settings and epidemiological studies. We conducted a search on PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases to perform a review of studies reporting the reliability and validity of PA questionnaires validated against OTs—doubly labeled water (DLW) or accelerometers—in free-living adults. We selected original articles published between 2009 and 2019 that reported validation studies of PA questionnaires. We identified 53 studies that fulfilled the eligibility criteria. Four PA questionnaires were validated against DLW and the remaining against accelerometers. Three questionnaires were compared with both DLW and accelerometer results. The correlation between questionnaire-estimated PAEE and DLW results ranged from r = .22 to r = .46, while that between questionnaire-estimated total PA (TPA) and accelerometer results ranged from r = .11 to r = .54 The intraclass correlation coefficients were between .56 and .84. Despite having good reliability, most of the questionnaires included in this review have shown limited validity for estimating TPA in adults. OTs should be considered as a first option, when possible. Further research is warranted on techniques to obtain more accurate PA and PAEE estimates.

A comparative study was made of correlation coefficients, taxonomic distance, non-metric coefficient, and probabilistic index in combmatlon with nearest neighbour, furthest neighbour, centroid, and flexible sorting as methods for the classification of 16 Trifolium taxa. The data used were published Rhizobium affinities that were shown to be meaningful from the point of view of morphology, cytology, and evolutionary theory. The criterion used in testing the numerical methods was the ability to produce groups of taxa in accordance with Rhizobium affinity groups. On the basis of this study acceptable classifications were obtained by using the non-metric coefficient with flexible sorting, taxonomic distance with furthest neighbour, and taxonomic distance with flexible sorting.
