Abstract Introduction. Color of teeth is undoubtedly one of the most important factors considering patients’ satisfaction with the quality of their restoration, especially in the anterior region of the mouth. Therefore, the determination of color is an integral part of esthetic dentistry and therefore it should be given the highest importance in dentistry in order to achieve the esthetic requirements of patients. Aim. The aim of this study was to evaluate tooth color in 3 different ethnic groups and its relationship with gender and type of tooth using a clinical spectrophotometer. Material and methods. A total of 90 dental students of the Medical University of Lublin was divided into three groups of 30 each according to participant’s ethnicity, which was as follows: Polish, Saudi Arabian and Taiwanese. Then, different divisions were made according to gender as well as the type of teeth. The tooth color was identified by spectrophotometer. The data was statistically analyzed. Results. For the Vita Classical shade guide, A3.5 shade was the most frequently chosen in Taiwanese and Saudi students’ teeth. However, the most common shade observed for the anterior teeth of Polish students was A3. The most common shade among males was A3.5 and in females A3 was the most frequent shade. In all 360 central incisors, overall, the most common shades noticed were A2, D3 and C1. In all 360 lateral incisors, D3, A3 and A2 were the most frequent shades for this group of teeth. In all 360 canines, A3.5 and A3 were the most common shade with almost half of the number of canines in this study was measured with A3.5. Conclusions. Based on the performed preliminary research, it was observed that Polish students tend to have brighter teeth than Saudis which in turn have even brighter teeth than Taiwanese students. It was also noted that men are more likely to have darker shade values than women. Central incisors have higher values of tooth color than lateral incisors and canines.

Objective. The purpose of this study was to radiographically evaluate technical quality of root canal fillings performed by dental undergraduates at Libyan International Medical University in Libya.Methods. Root canal cases were treated at university dental clinic from the fall of 2012 to the fall of 2013 by the fourth and fifth year dental students. Students used step-back preparation and cold lateral compaction in the treatment. Radiographs were reviewed over a two-year period from initial procedure to final restoration. Radiographs were evaluated for adequacy or inadequacy by length, density, and taper. Length inadequacy was classified as short or overextended. Overall quality was considered “adequate” based on all three variables. Chi-square tested differences between teeth groupings and adequacy classification. Significantpvalue results were adjusted by Bonferroni correction.Results. Adequate length of root canal fillings were observed in roughly half of all samples (48.6%). Density was adequate in 75.8% of the samples. Taper was observed as adequate in 68.8%. Higher quality was evident in anterior teeth (plus premolars) versus molars (65.6% versus 43.3%, resp.;p<0.04).Conclusion. Overall quality of endodontic treatment performed by undergraduate dental students was adequate in 53.9% of the cases. Significant opportunity exists to improve the quality of root canals provided by dental students.

ABSTRACTObjectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the radiographic quality of root canal fillings performed by first and second clinical year dental students at the Faculty of Dentistry in Süleyman Demirel University, Turkey. Methods: The technical quality of 833 root canal fillings was evaluated by three examiners according to the density of the filling and the distance between the end of the filling and the radiographic apex. A root canal with acceptable filling length and homogeneous root filling was defined as being good quality endodontic work (GQEW). A treated tooth was defined as having good quality endodontic work tooth (GQEW-T) when all its canals had a GQEW rating. Results: A Chi-square (χ2) test at the 0.05 significance level was used for the statistical analysis of the data. Of a total of 833 root canals, 662 (79.47%) root fillings were classed as GQEW. Two hundred fifty canals (73.4%) (135 teeth) treated by first clinical year dental students were defined as GQEW-T while 412 canals (204 teeth) (73.9%) treated by second clinical year dental students were defined as GQEW-T (P>.05). Most of the GQEW-T were defined in anterior teeth (90.1%), whereas the fewest were in molar teeth (46.6%) for both first and second clinical year dental students (P<.001). Conclusions: The quality of root canal fillings in anterior teeth performed by undergraduate dental students in Isparta, Turkey was satisfactory. However, to improve the success with molar teeth, education about newer techniques and instruments must be incorporated into the preclinical and clinical curriculum. (Eur J Dent 2011;5:324-330)

This retrospective study evaluated the clinical performance and the reasons for failure of anterior and posterior composite restorations placed by undergraduate dental students over a 3-year period. All cavities were restored using Prime & Bond 2.1 and TPH (Dentsply), according to the manufacturer's indications. One hundred and two patients who had received composite restorations by third and forth year undergraduate students were recalled and examined to analyze the quality of the restorations. The restorations were evaluated using the modified USPHS system. Two hundred and fifty-six composite restorations, 170 in anterior teeth and 86 in posterior teeth, were evaluated. Eighty-five percent of the restorations were considered satisfactory after 3 years. Class II and class IV restorations presented the highest prevalence of failure. Loss of the restoration and deficient marginal adaptation were the main causes of failure. No restoration failed due to secondary caries. Most restorations placed by dental students were considered satisfactory after long-term evaluation. Failure was more prevalent in larger restorations and was not associated with secondary caries.

Background and Objectives: Professional qualification-based dentist training plays an important role in providing the health services needed by the community. One of the most important steps in dentistry is choosing the color and matching the color of the tooth with the restoration. Color selection training in the curriculum of Iranian dental schools is provided to students as implicit training in some related courses such as restorations and prosthetics, and there is no separate practical unit for students to learn and practice more. The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of workshop training in the quality of tooth color selection by final year students of Tabriz Dental School in the academic year2019-2020. Material and Methods: In a quasi-experimeایntal study; Final year students of Tabriz Dental School entered the study. Students were randomly divided into experimental and control groups. In the experimental group, after selecting the primary color, through the workshop training strategy, color selection by Vitapan system in the right maxilla incisor 3 patients were taught simple, medium and complex method of workshop training and one week after training the correct color selection It was reviewed by these students. In the control group, color selection was done by students in exactly the same conditions as the case group who had received routine training. The data obtained from the study were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods (frequency-percentage) and Fisher's Exact test and statistical software SPSS.16. Results: In all three groups of simple, medium and complex patients, the quality of color selection in the intervention group was improved, which was significantly different from a dental point of view; however, there was no statistically significant difference between the intervention and control groups in all three groups of patients. Also, the effect of training in choosing complex colors was more significant. Conclusion: The results of the present study showed that workshop training had a positive effect on the color choice of dental students. Because dentistry is a procedure-based discipline and not all procedures are seen in the training curriculum. The dental professor can choose some procedures based on the pervasive need and teach in one workshop day. On the other hand, workshop training can be an proper educational strategy based on adult learning that learners show a lot of desire to learn according to their job needs.

The presence of diastema, between anterior teeth, distorts a pleasing smile by concentrating the observer’s attention on the spaces. The patient’s needs and expectations must be considered in the process of treatment planning to ensure satisfaction with the treatment outcomes. There are many forms of therapy that can be used for diastema closure. A carefully developed diagnosis, which includes a determination of the causal elements and advanced treatment planning, allows the most appropriate treatment to be selected for each case. The aim of this paper is present a multidisciplinary approach as a solution to multiple diastemas in the anterior region using gingival tissue recontouring and direct adhesive restorations, with minimum wear of the dental structure, after the orthodontic intervention discussing the minimal intervention to obtain imperceptive and aesthetic final restoration. Thirty-six months after the treatment was carried out, the final aesthetic was maintained with all dental element details and gingival tissue harmony, without recurrence of periodontal pockets and the preservation of the tooth color and shape.
