Abstract Recent progress in the production of heavy nuclei far from stability and in the studies of nuclear and chemical properties of heavy actinides is briefly reviewed. Exotic nuclear decay properties including nuclear fission of heavy nuclei, measurements of first ionization potentials of heavy actinides, and redox studies of heavy actinides are described. Brief history of discovery of the transuranium elements is also presented.

Physical and chemical properties of 6 apple varieties were measured to gain the variations. The qualities of apples are important for the consumer. These quality attributes can be described by colour, texture and physical attributes such as size and shape. Individual sugars, organic acids, and vitamin C were quantified in six apple cultivars with same soil, climatic conditions and altitudes. The results showed physical and chemical characterization existed different variance in apple varieties, the variance ranged from 6.1% to 109.05%. Fructose was the most dominant sugar in the different apple cultivars, followed by glucose and sucrose, while malic acid was the principal organic acid.

Physical and chemical characterization of 6 apple varieties (Early Golden Delicious, Jonagold, Hanfu, Ralls, Rainier and Fuji) from China was performed using pattern recognition tools. Measurements were taken on 12 parameters including weigh, colour, fruit firmness, crude fiber, total soluble solids, titration acid, water, Vitamin C, edible rate and juice yield .The results showed that physical and chemical properties existed different variance in apple varieties. The coefficient of variance of 12 properties was from 2.15% to 69.04%. The different apple varieties were investigated by principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA). PCA revealed that the first four components represented 95.13% of the total variability in properties and different apple groups. HCA classified samples into three groups on the basis of the physical and chemical properties.

Fast pyrolysis of biomass to produce bio-oil is one of the most promising technologies to utilize lignocellulosic biomass. Liquid bio-oil covers many potential application fields, to be used a fuel or a source for chemical extraction and production. Hence, it is necessary to understand the chemical properties of bio-oil. This review concentrates on the elemental and chemical properties of bio-oil, and also discusses the analysis and separation methods.

Product diversification is needed to increase selling and marketing prices. One of them is the African catfish sausage product. Liquid smoke has been used commercially by the food industry. This study aimed to determine the physical and chemical properties of smoked African catfish after adding different concentrations of liquid smoke and immersion duration. The chemical analysis measured the levels of protein, fat, and phenol. The results showed that sausage with a concentration of 20% liquid and soaking for 30 minutes was the best treatment with a protein content of 43.8 ± 0.34%, a fat of 12.33 ± 0.61%, and phenol 292.74 ppm. Determination of the compound using GC-MS found that the most dominant compound in the smokeless sausage was 2-hexanone, 3,3 dimethyl with a relative concentration of 32.42%. The dominant compound in the besttreated sausage was Furan, tetrahydro-2,2-dimethyl- with a relative concentration of 19%. Liquid smoke penetration is clearly visible in the microstructure of smoked sausages, both in the best-treated smoked sausages and commercial sausages. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) magnification of 2.500x shows that the best emulsified smoked sausages have a flatter structure, smaller droplets, and are more refined than smokeless sausages or commercial smoked sausages.

In order to explore the possibility of using low-lime fly ashes, the physical and chemical properties which have a direct bearing on their geotechnical and geoenvironmental behaviors have been investigated. In this paper, two types of low-lime fly ashes, originating from India, have been used. A brief account of various methods adopted in characterizing their physical, chemical, and geotechnical properties is presented. The relative importance of each of these properties in enhancing the bulk applicability of fly ashes has been brought out.

This work reports on the characterization of ZrSiO4 particulate-reinforced Li2O-ZrO2-SiO2-Al2O3 (LZSA) glass-ceramic matrix composites. The typical physical/mechanical and chemical properties of the glass batches and the composites were measured. A composition with 60 wt.% ZrSiO4 was preliminarily selected because it demonstrated the highest values of bending strength (190 MPa) and deep abrasion resistance (51 mm³). To this same composition was given a 7 wt.% bentonite addition in order to obtain plasticity behavior suitable for extrusion. The sintered samples (1150 ºC for 10 min) presented a thermal linear shrinkage of 14% and bending strength values of 220 MPa.
