AbstractThe cross sections of photoabsorption and photoionization of the nitrogen molecule have been determined with high resolution (Δλ: 0.08 Å). The experiments demonstrate that the continuous absorption is overlapped by strong bands which are diffuse due to radiationless transitions. The competition of autoionization and predissociation leads to a strong variation of the ionization probability. Arguments are given to explain this behaviour of the nitrogen bands.

ABSTRACT The discovery of exoplanetary systems has challenged some of the theories of planet formation, which assume unperturbed evolution of the host star and its planets. However, in star clusters the interactions with fly-by stars and binaries may be relatively common during the lifetime of a planetary system. Here, via high-resolution N-body simulations of star–planet systems perturbed by interlopers (stars and binaries), we explore the reconfiguration to the planetary system due to the encounters. In particular, via an exploration focused on the strong scattering regime, we derive the fraction of encounters that result in planet ejections, planet transfers, and collisions by the interloper star/binary, as a function of the characteristics of the environment (density, velocity dispersion), and for different masses of the fly-by star/binary. We find that binary interlopers can significantly increase the cross-section of planet ejections and collisions, while they only slightly change the cross-section for planet transfers. Therefore, in environments with high binary fractions, floating planets are expected to be relatively common, while in environments with low binary fractions, where the cross-sections of planet ejection and transfer are comparable, the rate of planet exchanges between two stars will be comparable to the rate of production of free-floating planets.

Photoabsorption cross sections necessary for calculations of the equilibrium conditions in the stratosphere fall into two distinct classes: cross sections for molecular oxygen and ozone, which control the transmission of solar radiation; cross sections for minor atmospheric species which are optically thin to solar radiation, and which are needed to calculate their rates of dissociation. The principal absorption features of molecular oxygen are absorption bands of the Schumann–Runge system between 175 and 200 nm and a weak dissociation continuum which extends from 175 to 260 nm. The band structure consists of many sharp rotational lines, and it is necessary to calculate cross sections using measured band parameters. Two measurements of the line widths for these bands have obtained large line widths (∼1 cm−1) indicating predissociation. The agreement between the two sets of data is good for only a few lines. This has implications in the calculation of the transmission of solar radiation to the lower stratosphere. The continua have been measured by four groups. The results agree, within the respective experimental errors, near 220 nm, but disagree near 250 nm.Ozone has a continuous absorption spectrum between 175 and 300 nm with band structure above 300 nm. Four sets of data are available which agree within ±2%. The cross section above 300 nm is temperature dependent. The cross sections for the minor species are in general not as well known. In nitric oxide, carbon monoxide, ammonia, and sulfur dioxide, band structure dominates the absorption spectrum, and cross sections have been measured at insufficient spectral resolution. Other species, such as nitric acid, hydrogen peroxide, water vapor, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and nitrogen dioxide, have continua over the entire spectra range from 175 to 300 nm. Cross sections for these species have been measured; however, cross sections for many molecules, e.g., N2O5, NO3, etc., have not been studied.

Absorption cross-sections for oxygen in the region 1670 to 1360 Å, corresponding to the process O 2 3 Ʃ g - + hv → O( 3 P ) + O( 1 D ), have been measured. The cross-section has a maximum value of 1⋅81 x 10 -17 cm 2 at 1450 Å and falls to half-value at 1567 and 1370 Å. The paper includes an account of technical methods of quantitative absorption spectrophotometry in this part of the vacuum ultra- violet.

It is well known that the resolution of bio-molecules in a high resolution electron microscope depends not just on the physical resolving power of the instrument, but also on the stability of these molecules under the electron beam. Experimentally, the damage to the bio-molecules is commo ly monitored by the decrease in the intensity of the diffraction pattern, or more quantitatively by the decrease in the peaks of an energy loss spectrum. In the latter case the exposure, EC, to decrease the peak intensity from IO to I’O can be related to the molecular dissociation cross-section, σD, by EC = ℓn(IO /I’O) /ℓD. Qu ntitative data on damage cross-sections are just being reported, However, the microscopist needs to know the explicit dependence of damage on: (1) the molecular properties, (2) the density and characteristics of the molecular film and that of the support film, if any, (3) the temperature of the molecular film and (4) certain characteristics of the electron microscope used

The use of transmission electron microscopes (TEM) has proven to be very valuable in the observation of semiconductor devices. The need for high resolution imaging becomes more important as the devices become smaller and more complex. However, the sample preparation for TEM observation of semiconductor devices have generally proven to be complex and time consuming. The use of ion milling machines usually require a certain degree of expertise and allow a very limited viewing area. Recently, the use of an ultra high resolution "immersion lens" cold cathode field emission scanning electron microscope (CFESEM) has proven to be very useful in the observation of semiconductor devices. Particularly at low accelerating voltages where compositional contrast is increased. The Hitachi S-900 has provided comparable resolution to a 300kV TEM on semiconductor cross sections. Using the CFESEM to supplement work currently being done with high voltage TEMs provides many advantages: sample preparation time is greatly reduced and the observation area has also been increased to 7mm. The larger viewing area provides the operator a much greater area to search for a particular feature of interest. More samples can be imaged on the CFESEM, leaving the TEM for analyses requiring diffraction work and/or detecting the nature of the crystallinity.

The work of multilayer glass structures for central and eccentric compression and bending are considered. The substantiation of the chosen research topic is made. The description and features of laminated glass for the structures investigated, their characteristics are presented. The analysis of the results obtained when testing for compression, compression with bending, simple bending of models of columns, beams, samples of laminated glass was made. Overview of the types and nature of destruction of the models are presented, diagrams of material operation are constructed, average values of the resistance of the cross-sections of samples are obtained, the table of destructive loads is generated. The need for development of a set of rules and guidelines for the design of glass structures, including laminated glass, for bearing elements, as well as standards for testing, rules for assessing the strength, stiffness, crack resistance and methods for determining the strength of control samples is emphasized. It is established that the strength properties of glass depend on the type of applied load and vary widely, and significantly lower than the corresponding normative values of the strength of heat-strengthened glass. The effect of the connecting polymeric material and manufacturing technology of laminated glass on the strength of the structure is also shown. The experimental values of the elastic modulus are different in different directions of the cross section and in the direction perpendicular to the glass layers are two times less than along the glass layers.

Abstract On mechanically polished cross-sections, getting a surface adequate for high-resolution imaging is sometimes beyond the analyst’s ability, due to material smearing, chipping, polishing media chemical attack, etc.. A method has been developed to enable the focused ion beam (FIB) to re-face the section block and achieve a surface that can be imaged at high resolution in the scanning electron microscope (SEM).
