Dostoevsky in the Game World of B. Akunin. The article identifies two types of inclusion of Dostoevsky’s legacy in the artistic world of B. Akunin: an open declaration of the work based on which the text is created, and intertextual game with Dostoevsky’s work as a whole. The research material was “A Provincial Detective, or The Adventures of Sister Pelagia” and the novel “F. M.” It is shown that B. Akunin in the trilogy about the Russian provinces directly names the sources (mainly Dostoevsky’s “great Pentateuch”), which removes intertextuality, since it manifests itself during the decoding operation. Study of the genre specificity of the novel “F. M.” leads to the conclusion about the existence of a metatext layer in the text, indicates an increased author’s self-irony and self-reflection, which is a sign of readiness to supplement the detective-adventurous direction of creativity with other artistic strategies.

Introduction. This article attempts to study the reception of the anthropological ideal in the novel by F. M. Dostoevsky “The Brothers Karamazov” by Russian religious philosophers of the late 19th–20th centuries. Authentic understanding and interpretation of the writer’s key ideas about the human ideal, its values and the meaning of life is possible only in the context of Orthodox anthropology. The importance of this material is not limited to comprehending the problem of the anthropological ideal and its influence on the further development of Russian religious and philosophical thought; moreover, it allows one to explore the peculiarities of the artistic world of the novel, including the specifics of the representation of the author’s principle in the ideological field of the work, the peculiarities of the writer’s worldview. Material and methods. The research material was the work of V. S. Solovyov “Three Speeches in memory of Dostoevsky”, V. V. Rozanov “The Legend of the Grand Inquisitor”, N. А. Berdyaeva “Dostoevsky’s worldview”, N. O. Lossky “Dostoevsky and his Christian worldview”, the canonical text of the novel by F. M. Dostoevsky “The Brothers Karamazov”. The work uses cultural and historical, comparative, structural and typological methods. Results and discussion. The science of Dostoevsky begins precisely with the works of Russian religious philosophers and thinkers of the late XIX – early XX centuries, which ideas about the essence of man, his purpose, ideally make him a meaningful core of his thoughts. The final novel of the Great Pentateuch “The Brothers Karamazov” as a quintessence of Dostoevsky’s life and creative path, inextricably connected with the spiritual and axiological imperatives of Orthodox anthropology, is most often attracted by religious philosophers to reflect key dominants of their own philosophical concepts, analyze and argue ideas. This material allows us to explore the features of the artistic world of the novel, the specifics of representation in the ideological field of the work of the writer’s worldview and author’s beginning, the features of the anthropological ideal, inextricably linked for Dostoevsky with such spiritual and value dominants as Christ, Orthodoxy, holiness, nationality, good and evil, and to identify its influence on the further development of Russian religious and philosophical thought. Conclusion. Dostoevsky’s anthropological ideal, according to religious philosophers, is based on the Orthodox doctrine of man, revealing both the antinomy of human nature («pro et contra» in the writer’s terminology) and its previous striving for God, Truth, the need for good, outside of which the person is aware of his non-existence. The dominants of the anthropological ideal of the writer, which are reflected in the works of religious philosophers, are holiness, beauty as the ethical dominant of the person, and reproach in the values and meanings of Christ-centered Russian culture in their foundations.

Religious topics are increasingly addressed in journalism worldwide, including newspapers, television, radio and Internet news. The high visibility of religion in society and, inseparably connected to this, the increasing reappearance of religious themes in news media have come to the attention of recent academic research as well. This special issue offers new research material on the topic but also a new design and system of organizing the field. The novel approach of this special issue is threefold: (1) it focuses specifically and only on journalistic media; (2) it discusses a variety of religious and geographical contexts through case studies; and (3) it introduces a new structure of discussing journalism and religion by analyzing the three key concepts “sacred”, “secular” and “authority” through the lens of Laclau’s (1996, pp. 36) approach to terms as empty signifiers. The articles analyze how news media ascribe meanings to these terms.

Anyone on earth may at one time or another reflects him or herself in a way he or she feels comfortable—be it as simple as writing up a phrase “Go to Hell with Communism!” on a wall of an old building. In this respect, he or she has reflected him or herself that he or she does not agree with the ideology of communism. The current study investigated to justify that literary works reflect the ‘selves’ of the authors in one or more possible ways. A poet may, to reflect him or herself, be characterized as employing particular styles or diction. A novelist may try to involve in one of the characters he or she has developed in order to reflect him or herself. In this study, a novel entitled “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen (1813) was investigated to justify that the author (Austen) reflected herself in one of the characters in the novel. The findings reveal that Austen tried to manifest herself in one of the characters called ‘Elizabeth Bennet’ in three different ways: (1) how she behaved in her family (loving all family members, especially being close to her father), (2) how she spent most of the time—reading to broaden the horizon of thinking. As a result, she could (3) skillfully negotiate with other people through their positive sides. The study concludes that everyone, of whatever professions he or she has, will reflect him or herself in a way he or she may not realize.

The article shows the connection between the epistolary novel "Poor Folk", the events of the biography of F. M. Dostoevsky and his epistolary legacy of the Kuznetsk period (1855-1857). The novel "Poor Folk" created in after -penal colony time is considered as a high standard for the author, as a self-reflection. The letters of F. M. Dostoevsky from the time of the Kuznetsk events, where there are several excerpts about "Poor Folk", are presented as a workbook, a creative laboratory, where the writer develops a new quality of artistic expression characteristic of his mature works. For Dostoevsky, the novel "Poor Folk" is not just a brilliant debut that opened the way to "great literature", but also a text that has prophetic and life-creating modes, and has connections with the events of his life in Kuznetsk. Repeated reference to it, the presence of several versions of the novel, speaks about the peculiarities of the author's creative thinking and the significance of this work for the writer.

As an essayist, Marilynne Robinson repeatedly challenges the Darwinian theories that, since the 1970s, have captivated many of our most prominent social scientists, philosophers, and public intellectuals. Such theories can seem marginal to her 2004 novel Gilead, which is narrated by a small-town minister in mid-twentieth-century Iowa. But the novel is a prolonged meditation on the high words recommended in Robinson’s essays, words that would challenge the priority that neo-Darwinians assign to strategic and kinship relations and that would emphasize the capacity for self-reflection and “testimony” that Robinson’s essays underscore. For all the challenges Gilead presents to Darwinian theory, however, it also challenges Robinson’s own discursive rebuttals of it. Written as a diary, the text foregrounds the moment-to-moment difficulty of applying our normative concepts: living in a “world ongoing,” the narrator struggles to achieve the kind of authority that Robinson herself manifests in her own nonfiction.

This article focuses on the issue of valuation and discusses the role and textual properties of irony in the light of speech act theory. The research material used for the analysis comes from the novel by Philip Kerr "March Violets", which is a representative of the historical detective novel genre. The article does not aim to criticize the book's translations, but focuses on the message itself, which, through them, reaches the recipient and makes a specific impression on him/her. This specific impression, evoked by said speech acts and thoughtfully encoded in the text, is subject to the analysis here. Sociolinguistic assumptions have been adopted as the basis for these considerations, which seems to be justified in so far as language within such analytical framework can be treated as a binder across social groups, nations, communities, and may, therefore, play a significant role both in shaping them, shaping their collective beliefs, ideas, and cultural norms.

A translator of classical literature is faced with the task of identifying the goal and methods of conveying the national originality of a generally recognized literary masterpiece. The article considers this problem in the context of translations of the novel in verse Eugene Onegin by Alexander Pushkin into English and French. At the same time, it raises the questions of the translators attitude to their own work, the depth of interpretation of the original, the degree of adaptation of the original text for a foreign reader. In addition, a matter of great importance is the translators assessment of the result of their own work, which is reflected in their comments and preface to the translated text. The goal of this research is to substantiate the importance of the linguistic and cultural function of comments and prefaces, which also made it possible to identify the features of the translations themselves and emphasize their continuity. When translating works of classical literature, translators do not limit their task to the translation itself. In this regard, the preface-commentary complex is viewed in the article as an important part of the translators work. The research material includes about 40 English and over 10 French translations made in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries and presented in chronological order. Mainly those that are accompanied by prefaces and comments were selected for the analysis. The research helps to present the translations of the novel not only in terms of continuity, but also in terms of their authors critical attitude to each other, thus bringing these components of translation into the focus of a professional discussion. As a result of comparing various translations, it is possible to identify the difficulties of literary translation of the novel Eugene Onegin , which include the preservation of its poetic form, the panoramic nature of its composition, including scenes of life of the 19th century Russian nobility, and the national spirit associated with the translation of national and cultural vocabulary. The research confirms that the very fact of numerous translations of this novel, which is paradigmatic for the Russian culture, can be viewed as a form of its worldwide recognition, regardless of the professional and reader's assessment of these translations. This enables us to speak of the existence of a strong tradition that has developed in European translation studies around this particular work.

The article deals, dash-like, with the development of Jewish subject matter in Russian literature: from taboo to self-reflection because of belonging to Jewry, from euphemisms of XIX and XX centuries to the open and proud declaration made by the conceptual Jew, Arkan Kariv, in his XXI century prose. Exemplified in fragments of writings by Dina Rubina, Friedrich Gorenstein, Valentin Rasputin, Alexandr Melikhov and Jury Karabchievsky, some facets of Jewish theme are discussed. In Kariv’s novels Interpreter and Once in Bishkek, a Jew — outsider, pariah, and self-reflecting intellectual — turns into a brutal leader named Martyn Zilber. A special subtlety of this novels’ structure is given by the fact of palimpsest: the reader understands that behind the Kariv’s writings is the novel by his father, Jury Karabchievsky, as much as behind Martyn Zilber’s father stands Alexandr Zilber, the hero of Karabchievsky’s novel.
