AbstractWhile scholarship suggests that improving tenure security and housing significantly reduces disaster risk at the household level within urban settings, this assertion has not been adequately tested. Tenure security can be conceived as being composed of three interrelated and overlapping forms: tenure security as determined by legal systems; de facto tenure security; and tenure security as perceived by residents. This article traces the relationship between tenure security, the quality of housing, and disaster risk on the basis of a mixed methods comparative case study of the settlements of Kawangware and Kibera in Nairobi. Although the findings suggest that owner-occupancy is associated with the structural integrity of dwellings to a greater extent than tenantship, no association was found between the length of occupancy by households and the structural integrity of the dwelling. Moreover, tenantship is not found to be closely associated with fires and flooding affecting the dwelling as extant scholarship would suggest. Formal ownership is linked with greater investment and upgrading of property with significant implications for disaster risk. Our findings highlight the complex relationship between tenure security and disaster risk in urban informal settlements and provide impetus for further investigation.

Abstract This case study investigates the affective governing of young unemployed people, and it concludes that getting money in the Danish welfare state comes with an “affective price”. In the quest for a job, unemployed people have been increasingly responsibilized in order to live up to the ideal of the active jobseeker. Consequently, when faced with unemployment, they are encouraged to work harder on themselves and their motivation. Based on an interview study with young unemployed people (N=39) and field observations made at employment fund agencies in Denmark (2014–15), I explore how young unemployed people are governed by and through their emotions. By supplementing governmentality studies (Foucault et al. 1988, 2010) with the concept of “affective economy” from Ahmed (2014), I discuss how young unemployed people who receive money from the Danish state are placed in a situation of debt. The paper unfolds how this debt becomes visible as the unemployed people often describe feeling under suspicion for not doing enough, for not being motivated enough. Through an abundance of (pro) activity, they have to prove the suspicion of being lazy wrong, and through managing themselves as active jobseekers, they earn the right to get money from the state. Here motivation, passion and empowerment are key currencies. I discuss the intricate interplay between monetary and affective currencies as well as political implications in the context of the Danish welfare. The article contributes by making visible the importance of taking affective matters into account when investigating the complex relationship between politics and psychology.

This paper provides a case study of a threatened seahorse species, Hippocampus reidi, highlighting the importance of using ecological information to assist conservation and management initiatives. Underwater visual sighting data (50 x 2m transect) gathered along the NE, SE and S portions of the Brazilian coast revealed an unequal distribution across localities, perhaps related to harvesting pressure, and a mean density of 0.026 ind.m-2. Our findings suggest some restricted spatial use by H. reidi, which was consistent with its estimated home range, and with re-sighting of specimens. Reproduction was recorded year-round, however productive peaks may exist. Components of habitat structure mostly used as anchoring points were mangrove plants, macroalgae, cnidarians, seagrass, sponges, and bryozoans. Conservation recommendations include: further characterization and mapping of habitats; assessment of availability and condition of microhabitats in selected areas, and studies on dispersal routes during initial life stages.

Abstract: This study aimed to present a checklist of marine fishes from coastal environments of the Island of Santa Catarina, including comments on the zoogeographic affinities, conservation status of each species, and functional groups. A total of 169 fish species belonging to 30 orders and 58 families were recorded. The most speciose families were Sciaenidae, Carangidae and, Engraulidae, representing 26,62% of the recorded species. Anchoa was the richest genus, followed by Sphoeroides and Cynoscion. Most of the species have their distribution limited to the western Atlantic, and two groups of fish were distinguished according to the species distributions: 1) species occurring in the Caribbean and in the Brazilian Province; and 2) Transatlantic species. Thirteen species are critically threatened, 10 are overexploited on the Brazilian coast, and 2 are threatened by extinction. Most of the species are either marine stragglers or marine migrants, and most of them are zoobenthivores, piscivores, or both.

Este artigo tem por finalidade o estudo de caso de uma reunião de Conselho de Classe que foi realizado no dia 14 de dezembro de 2020 em uma instituição Militar do estado de Santa Catarina. Nessa reunião do colegiado, houve algumas situações que se tornaram inviáveis no aspecto de entendimento da instituição Conselho de Classe, porque não se fez presente as normas legais e porque se confundiu essa instituição, no processo de ensino-aprendizagem, como instituição, simplesmente, homologatória de decisões que já são levadas para os membros do grupo, sem qualquer debate amplo sobre a situação acadêmica dos alunos que lá chegam para uma (re)análise ampla. Além disso, há a questão de omissão de fases e oportunidades de recuperação desses alunos em momentos oportunos no decorrer do ano letivo, tal como fases de conselho de classes bimestrais/trimestrais e exames/recuperações finais, limitando-se as (re)análises ao resumo de uma situação aritmética, como se o conhecimento pudesse ser mensurado por valores numéricos de uma régua de medir. Também há o descaso na composição do grupo colegiado que as instituições promovem para escamotearem os resultados com a(s) inclusão(ões) do(s) membro(s) do(s) núcleo(s) pedagógico(s) da(s) instituição(ões) que se somam aos professores que integram o grupo colegiado. É preciso observar a legislação e ter como meta o que difere o aspecto técnico do aspecto pedagógico e essa reflexão é feita neste artigo. O estudo de caso aqui proposto é para uma reflexão das instituições educacionais, limitar o escopo de cada departamento técnico e, efetivamente pedagógico, bem como a posição de confronto das situações de aprovação/reprovação daqueles alunos que chegam para (re)análise no final do ano letivo em curso.

This research analyzes the process of strategy formation in the Foundation of Support to the Scientific and Technological Research of the State of Santa Catarina - FAPESC, a body of the government’s direct administration structure in the State of Santa Catarina, with the purpose of understanding how its construction occurs: if in a deliberate way, anticipated and rational; or, as an emergency, in consequence of the interactions of the agents present in the organizations’ routine. By way of a case study of longitudinal, historical and biographical character, and based in the procedures proposed by the Direct Research (MINTZBERG, 1979; MINTZBERG; McHUGH, 1985), the history of the institution was retrieved in the period comprised between the years of 1990 and 2005. The data has disclosed that, in adapting itself strategically, beyond the predominance of a planned and sistemic strategic behavior, the institution suffered an intense influence from the governmental politics of the State and this, associated with the low power to influence the environment with high environmental determinism, reduced the importance of the management scienter in the success of the company indicating that mechanisms of environmental selection operate to the detriment of the adaptation. RESUMO Este trabalho tem como tema boas práticas para a mediação da estruturação de trabalhos acadêmicos por meio de ambientes virtuais de ensino e de aprendizagem. Nesse viés, a presente pesquisa teve como objetivo utilizar as ferramentas da plataforma educacional Moodle para mediar a estruturação de trabalhos acadêmicos, por intermédio das boas práticas identificadas na revisão de literatura. Para tal, realizou-se um estudo de caso na turma de Metodologia da Pesquisa Científica do programa de pós-graduação em Tecnologias da Informação e Comunicação, da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. Na análise dos dados, utilizou-se o alfa de Cronbach para identificar a eficiência dos recursos utilizados. Com os resultados, constatou-se a contribuição de boas práticas para a mediação da estruturação do trabalho acadêmico, enfatizando-se o uso efetivo das ferramentas e dos recursos da plataforma Moodle e a importância da integração de métodos de outras áreas de conhecimento ao modelo elaborado.

In the field of criminology social inequality has long been theorized to be associated with crime. This issue has been extensively studied and empirical research has shown that income inequality and low socio-economic status are positively associated with crime perpetration and victimization. Latin America constitutes a particularly interesting case study to analyse the association between crime and inequality. Simultaneously, it is considered to be one of the most unequal and violent regions on the planet. Therefore, it might be tempting to conclude that inequality must play a major role in the explanation of this region’s high levels of crime and violence. While this possibility cannot be rejected, the overall goals of this chapter are to analyse and discuss this complex relationship, focusing not only on how inequality might explain crime and violence, but also on how criminal justice institutions stigmatize, label, and reproduce social inequalities and social exclusion.
