Nitrogen fertilization has considerable effects on growth and yield of potato crop. Leaf expansion is one of the most important growth parameters that can be used to optimize nitrogen fertilization management in agroecological practices. We evaluated the effect of nitrogen fertilization on the leaf area index (LAI) of potato crop during different phenological stages by two different methods. Experimental plots were established in a randomized block design with the following treatments: no nitrogen supply (0-N), 133 kg N ha-1 (133-N), and 400 kg N ha-1 (400-N), using the Granola variety, at the Andes region, Merida city, Venezuela. We measured leaf area at the main phenological stages of the crop using a plant canopy analyzer. LAI showed significant differences among treatments and phenological stages, except during the emergence stage. The maximum LAI values were obtained 55 days after emergence: 400-N (1.42±0.16) > 133-N (0.92±0.21) > 0-N (0.34±0.08). Nitrogen fertilization had a significant effect on the development of LAI in potato crop along its different phenological stages.

An experiment was conducted at Sadipur charland under Farming System Research and Development Site, Hatgobindapur, Faridpur, during rabi season of 2012-13 and 2013-14 to study the growth and yield performance of cv. BARI Gom-24 as affected by different dates of sowing under Agro-ecological Zone-12 (AEZ-12) of Bangladesh. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with six replications, comprising five different dates of sowing viz. November 5, November 15, November 25, December 5 and December 15. Results reveal that the tallest plant, leaf area index, total dry matter, and crop growth rate were observed in November 25 sown crop and leaf area index, total dry matter and crop growth rate were higher at booting, grain filling, and tillering stages of the crop. Maximum effective tillers hill-1 (3.49), spikes m-2, (311), number of grains spike-1 (42.20) and 1000-grain weight (52.10 g) were produced by November 25 sown crop exhibited the highest grain (4.30 t ha-1) and straw yield (4.94 t ha-1) as well as harvest index (46.88%) of the crop. Lowest performance was observed both in early (November 5) and late sown crop (December 15). The overall results indicated that November 25 sown crop showed better performance in respect of growth and yield of wheat under charland ecosystem of Bangladesh.J. Bangladesh Agril. An experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during October 2014 to March 2015 to study the growth and yield performance of field pea varieties as influenced by date of sowing. The experiment comprised of two factors namely, date of sowing and variety. Date of sowing comprised of 29 October, 13 November and 28 November and the variety comprised of BARI motor-1, BADC motor-1, Natore local and Narail local. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications. The results indicate that all the growth characters were varied significantly at different days after. Those growth characters except leaf area index were highest for the crop sown on 28 November. The growth characters were highest in variety Natore local and lowest in Narail local except dry matter it was lowest in BADC motor-1. The interaction effect of 28 November sowing, Natore local was highest for all of the growth parameters except leaf area index it was highest on 13 November sowing and the interaction on 29 October sowing BARI motor-1 gave the lowest value. Most of the yield contributing parameters significantly affected by sowing date. The highest seed yield (827.7 kg ha-1) and other yield contributing characters were found on early sowing (13 November) and the lowest seed yield (534 kg ha-1) and other yield contributing characters was at 28 November sowing. Variety had significant effect on yield and yield contributing parameters. The highest seed yield (1032.2 kg ha-1) and Stover yield (3221.35 kg ha-1) was obtained from Natore local while Narail local gave lowest (469.1 kg ha-1) seed yield and lowest Stover yield. The interaction of 13 November with Natore local gave the highest seed yield (1319.3 kg ha-1) and lowest seed yield was produced by Narail local (330.35 kg ha-1) by late sowing (28 November). It can be concluded that, vegetative growth were highest at 28 November sowing and yield components gave highest value on 13 November sowing. Highest yield was produced by Natore local at 13 November sowing but yield was reduced drastically when the crop sown on 28 November. So, it is clear that the optimum date of sowing for field pea is at 13 November.

This research aimed to determine the effect of spacing on the growth and yield of corn. It was conducted from July to November 2019 at the Experimental Plantation of Cereal Crops Research Institute (BalitSereal), Maros, South Sulawesi. The experimental method used was a randomized block design consisting of 4 treatments: J1= (100 cm x 50 cm) x 20 cm, one seed per hole; J2= (100 cm x 50 cm) x 30 cm, alternating between one seed per hole and two seeds per hole; J3= (100 cm x 50 cm) x 40 cm, two seeds per hole; J4= (100 cm x 50 cm) x 15 cm, one seed per hole. The observed variables were plant height, number of leaves, stem diameter, leaf area index, Anthesis Silking Interval (ASI), length of cob 1 and cob 2, diameter of cob 1 and cob 2, weight of shelled seeds/plant, weight of 100 seeds on cob 1 and cob 2, and production of shelled seeds/hectare. The experimental results showed that plant spacing affected the growth and production of maize. The J3 spacing (100 cm x 50 cm) x 40 cm with two seeds per hole significantly affected the leaf area index and gave the highest average stem diameter. The J2 spacing with (100 cm x 50 cm) x 30 cm with alternating between one seed per hole and two seeds per hole produced the highest production in terms of weight of shelled seeds/plant, weight of 100 seeds and yield of shelled seeds/hectare.

AbstractA field experiment was carried out to study the effect of spacing and nitrogen level on growth and yield of maize in Parbat from February to July, 2019. The experiment was laid out in two Factorial Randomized complete Block Design (RCBD) comprising of spacing: 60×15 cm and 60×25 cm and nitrogen: 30, 60, 90 and 120 kg/ha level as treatment with three replications. “Arun-2” variety of maize was planted on clay loam and acidic soil (pH 5.3) having medium in total nitrogen (0.15%), medium in soil available phosphorus (48.1 kg/ha), medium in soil available potassium (218.8 kg/ha) and medium in organic matter content (2.92%). Result shows that yield was significantly increased with increment in N-level up to 90 kg N/ha. The grain yield (5.18 mt/ha) was significantly higher at 90 kg N/ha than at 30 and 60 kg N/ha but at par with 120 kg N/ha. Significant effect on grain yield due to spacing was observed. The grain yield (4.11 mt/ha) obtained at spacing 60×15 cm. Moreover, the highest grain yield showed that highest grain yield (4.33 mt/ha) was obtained under 90 kg N/ha plus 60×15 cm spacing. The result revealed that different spacing and nitrogen level significantly affect the plant height and leaf area index. The plant height and leaf area index were significantly high at close spacing (60×15 cm) and at 120 kg N/ha. Likewise, yield attributing characteristics like cob length, cob diameter, number of kernel/rows, number of kernel row, thousand gran weight were the highest at 90 kg/ha but as par with 120 kg/ha at close spacing (60×15 cm). This study suggested that maize production can be maximized by cultivating “Arun-2” maize fertilizing with 90 kg N/ha and maintaining 60×15 cm spacing.

A field experiment was conducted during Kharif 2017 at ZARS, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru to study the influence of different levels of Farm Yard Manure (FYM) and Jeevamrutha on growth and yield of Sunflower in red sandy loam soil. There were nine treatment combinations laid out in factorial randomized complete block design, which were replicated thrice. The experimental results revealed that, the application of FYM at 150 per cent nitrogen equivalent and jeevamrutha at 1500 L ha-1significantly influenced growth parameters like plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, leaf area index and total dry matter production. The interaction effect of FYM and jeevamrutha was significant in enhancing the seed yield of sunflower due to improvement in yield attributes like head diameter, number of seeds per head, hundred seed weight and seed yield per plant.

The productivity of soybean in Assosa Zone particularly in Assosa and Bambassi districts is very low due to poor soil fertility management practices that resulted in severe soil acidity and low N-fixing inoculants in the soil. Hence, this experiment was conducted during the main cropping season of 2019 and 2020 in Assosa and Bambassi districts to evaluate the effect of biofertilizers, organic fertilizers, inorganic NPSB fertilizers, and lime on nodulation, growth, and yield of soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill). Factorial combinations of two biofertilizer inoculants (without biofertilizer (B1) and SB12 plus MAR1495 biofertilizers at their recommended rates of 500 g·ha−1 (B2); two organic fertilizers: without fresh cattle manure (M1) and fresh cattle manure at 10 t·ha−1 (M2); two lime rates: without lime (L1) and lime at 5 t·ha−1 (L2); two inorganic NPSB fertilizers: NPSB at 9.5-23-3.5-0.05 (F1) and NPSB at 19-46-7-0.1 (F2) at their recommended rates for soybean) were laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Effective nodules, leaf area index, and grain yield were collected and analyzed using SAS 9.1.3 software. Results of the experiment showed that effective nodules, leaf area index, grain yield, bulk density, pH, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, organic carbon, and cation exchange capacity were highly ( P < 0.01 ) affected by the interaction of bio-, organic, and inorganic fertilizers and lime at both locations and years. Across all treatments, the grain yield of soybean was increased in the second year, while it was lowest in the first year at both locations. Finally, the interaction of SB12 + MAR1495, 10 t·ha−1 fresh cattle manure, without lime, and NPSB at 19-46-7-0.1 increased the grain yield of soybean in both Assosa and Bambassi districts and should be adopted appropriately to enhance the productivity of soybean in the areas and similar agroecologies, while the interaction effect of SB12 + MAR1495, 10 t ha−1 FCM, 5 t·ha−1 lime, and NPSB at 19-46-7-0.1 improved soil physicochemical properties in both the districts and similar agroecologies.

A field experiment was conducted in agricultural research station which is located at Al-Qurna district, 75 km north of Basrah governorate during the autumn season 2018. The aim was to study the effect of agricultural sulfur (0, 3, 6 and 9 t S.ha-1) on growth and yield of three sorghum genotypes (Inkath, Rabeh and Kafier2). The experiment was conducted as randomized complete block design in a factorial arrangement with three replications. The results showed that there were significant differences among the genotypes. The genotype kafier2 gave the highest average of plant height of 171.5 cm while the genotype inkath gave the highest weight of 1000 seed (25.59 gm), grain yield (3.97 t.ha-1). Genotype rabeh produced highest average of leaf area index and number of grain head of 3.10 and 1994.41 grain.head-1 respectively. The agricultural sulfur showed significant effect on most studied traits of sorghum (plant height, leaf area index, grain head, weight of 1000 grains and grain yield). The addition of agricultural suffer up to 9 t. ha-1 increased grain yield and produced 5.80 t.ha-1. The interaction of genotypes and agricultural sulfur showed a significant effect on some traits of growth and grain yield. The genotype inkath supplied with 9 t.ha-1 of agricultural sulfur resulted in highest grain yield of 5.80 t.ha-1, while the genotype rabeh supplied with 6 t.ha-1 of agricultural sulfur gave the highest average of leaf area index (3.54) and number of grains head (2106.33 grain.head-1).

ABSTRACTResposse of Growth and Yields of Jobs Tears to Row Spacing and Liquid Complement FertilizerJob’s tears (Coix laeryama-jobi L.) are a functional food crop in West Java Indonesia. It is rich of nutritions when used as food and also rich of essential chemicals when used as herbal. It can grow on marginal ecosystem, tolerance to water stress’s environment. However, Job’s tears are low in grain production. The problem could be overcome by treatment of row spacing and liquid complement fertilizers to increase the plants growth and yields. This study used three levels of row spacing (50 x 50 cm, 75 x 50 cm, and 100 x 50 cm) and three levels of liquid complement fertilizers (2 ml/l, 4 ml/l, and 6 ml/l) to examine the growth and yields of jobs tears. The experiment used Randomized Block Design (RBD) consisted of nine treatments and three replications. The experiment was conducted at Sukasari Sumedang West Java. Growth and yield indicators such as leaf area index, percentage of huskering and harvesting index were observed. The results showed that the treatments of row spacing and liquid complement fertilizer had significantly affected the leaf area index, percentage of huskering and Job’s tears harvesting index. The combination of plant spacing at 50 x 50 cm with the concentration of liquid complement fertilizer at level 2 ml/l showed the best effect to the jobs tears yield. It resulted the weight of seeds of 4.77 kg/ plot and the weight of seed was 5.96 tons/ha. This indicated that the row spacing and liquid complement fertilizer had significantly affecting the Job’s tears yield.Keywords: Job’s tears, Row spacing, Liquid complement fertilizer, Growth, YieldsABSTRAKTanaman hanjeli merupakan tanaman pangan fungsional di Jawa Barat Indonesia. Tanaman hanjeli sangat kaya nutrisi sebagai sumber makanan dan kaya bahan kimia penting sebagai tanaman herbal. Tanaman tersebut dapat tumbuh pada lahan marjinal dan toleran terhadap cekaman air, namun demikian hasilnya masih rendah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh perlakuan jarak tanam dan pemberian pupuk pelengkap cair terhadap peningkatan pertumbuhan dan hasil tanaman hanjeli. Penelitian ini menggunakan tiga level jarak tanam (50x50 cm, 75x50 cm, dan 100x50 cm) dan tiga level konsentrasi pupuk pelengkap cair (PPC) (2 ml/l, 4 ml/l, dan 6 ml/l) sebagai perlakuan. Percobaan di lapangan menggunakan Rancangan Acak Kelompok (RAK) yang terdiri dari 9 perlakuan dan tiga kali ulangan yang dilaksanakan di Sukasari Sumedang Jawa Barat. Data yang diamati adalah komponen pertumbuhan dan hasil tanam hanjeli. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kombinasi jarak tanam dengan aplikasi pupuk pelengkap cair memberikan pengaruh terhadap indeks luas daun, rendemen pecah kulit, dan indeks panen. Kombinasi jarak tanam 50 x 50 dengan konsentrasi PPC 2 ml/l memberikan pengaruh terbaik terhadap hasil tanaman hanjeli. Perlakuan tersebut menghasilkan bobot biji per petak sebesar 4,77 kg per petak dan bobot biji per hektar sebesar 5,96 ton per hektar. Dari hasil penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa jarak tanam dan pupuk pelengkap cair memberikan pengaruh yang baik terhadap hasil tanaman hanjeli.Kata Kunci : Hanjeli, Jarak tanam, Pupuk pelengkap cair, Pertumbuhan, Hasil

Shallot (Allium cepa L. Aggregatum group) is one of the most widely utilized vegetables by Indonesian people. Some technologies have been adapted to improved shallot productivity. One of those are the application of beneficial microorganisms. We applied mycorrhizal fungi, Trichoderma sp., and Bacillus thuringiensis as well as the combination among these microorganisms were applied in Shallots cultivation and were investigated to improve the growth and development of shallot. A field experiment was arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design with two treatment factors. The first factor consisted of two shallot cultivars, namely Biru Lancor and Crok Kuning; whilst the second factor consisted of six beneficial microorganism treatments, i.e. control, mycorrhizae, Trichoderma sp., Bacillus thuringiensis, the combination of mycorrhizae and Trichoderma sp., and the combination of those three microorganisms. The observation was conducted on infection percentage of mycorrhizae, total population of Trichoderma sp., leaf area, leaf area index, net assimilation rate, crop growth rate, harvest index, and plant yield. The data obtained were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and continued with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5% significance level. The results showed the leaf area of shallot was improved as affected by the application of mycorrhizal fungi. The effectiveness and implication of mycorrhizal fungi on shallot growth would decrease if the application of was combined with other microorganisms. However, the application of beneficial microorganisms had not been able to increase component yield and yield of Biru Lancor and Crok Kuning, indicated by bulb weight, number of bulb, bulb diameter, number of bulb per cluster, and bulb yield per hectare.

Abstract Extraction of leaf area index (LAI) is an important prerequisite in numerous studies related to plant ecology, physiology and breeding. LAI is indicative for the performance of a plant canopy and of its potential for growth and yield. In this study, a novel method to estimate LAI based on RGB images taken by an unmanned aerial system (UAS) is introduced. Soybean was taken as the model crop of investigation. The method integrates viewing geometry information in an approach related to gap fraction theory. A 3-D simulation of virtual canopies helped developing and verifying the underlying model. In addition, the method includes techniques to extract plot based data from individual oblique images using image projection, as well as image segmentation applying an active learning approach. Data from a soybean field experiment were used to validate the method. The thereby measured LAI 14 prediction accuracy was comparable with the one of a gap fraction-based handheld device (R2 of 0.92, RMSE of 0.42 m2 m2) and correlated well with destructive LAI measurements (R2 of 0.89, RMSE of 0.41 m2 m2). These results indicate that, if respecting the range (LAI ≤3) the method was tested for, extracting LAI from UAS derived RGB images using viewing geometry information represents a valid alternative to destructive and optical handheld device LAI measurements in soybean. Thereby, we open the door for automated, high-throughput assessment of LAI in plant and crop science.
