Agriculture in Gujarat has grown rapidly over the last decade, driven at least partly by diversification to high value crops and dairying. High value agriculture requires better water control and offers higher returns for irrigation. Farmers, farm communities and the state government in Gujarat have responded to this requirement by implementing large-scale water supply and demand management projects like interlinking of rivers, the world's largest popular recharge movement, electricity distribution reforms to limit use of subsidized energy for groundwater irrigation and rapid expansion of areas under micro-irrigation. Some of these programmes have already been declared successful and are being scaled up in Gujarat (like the Saurashtra recharge movement) and emulated elsewhere (like the Jyotirgram Yojana) without much critical scrutiny. Other programmes like the initiative to spread micro-irrigation have not received the attention they deserve from the research community in spite of their apparent success. This paper subjects the biggest on-going supply- and demand-side initiatives for water management in Gujarat to critical scrutiny in light of the recent data and tries to draw lessons for the state and other parts of India facing sustainable water management challenges.

The article analyzes the state of pricing in the oil market, examines topical issues of assessing the emerging factors of influence both on the domestic and foreign markets. Particular attention is paid to the issues of the emerging situation of supply and demand for oil and oil products, regulation of its production, storage, transportation, processing, formation of sales volumes and income from sales. Highlighted and disclosed the problem of price regulation in the aspects of finding and achieving flexible forms of negotiating prices for oil supply and oil sales, taking into account various options for the volume of oil production.

The article assesses the state of the heat economy of the Northern region. The purpose of the article is to reveal the reasons for chronic backwardness of the region's industry from the average Russian indicators. To achieve the goal, solved the following problems: the features of heat economy in the North, analyzes the housing development, production and consumption of heat energy, as the sources of heat energy and heat networks, and also reforms in the heat economy of the region, based on which conclusions on assessment of the heat economy of the region. In recent years, there has been a twofold decrease in the rate of renewal of fixed assets of the heat economy against the norm, low rates of introduction of the resource-saving technologies in the heat economy, and in general, in the housing and communal services of the region. The level of marginal balance of supply and demand in the heat energy market is determined. The article is written to correct the decisions of the Federal and regional Executive authorities in terms of ensuring the reliability of heat economy of the Northern region.

AbstractSteel production is a difficult-to-mitigate sector that challenges climate mitigation commitments. Efforts for future decarbonization can benefit from understanding its progress to date. Here we report on greenhouse gas emissions from global steel production over the past century (1900-2015) by combining material flow analysis and life cycle assessment. We find that ~45 Gt steel was produced in this period leading to emissions of ~147 Gt CO2-eq. Significant improvement in process efficiency (~67%) was achieved, but was offset by a 44-fold increase in annual steel production, resulting in a 17-fold net increase in annual emissions. Despite some regional technical improvements, the industry’s decarbonization progress at the global scale has largely stagnated since 1995 mainly due to expanded production in emerging countries with high carbon intensity. Our analysis of future scenarios indicates that the expected demand expansion in these countries may jeopardize steel industry’s prospects for following 1.5 °C emission reduction pathways. To achieve the Paris climate goals, there is an urgent need for rapid implementation of joint supply- and demand-side mitigation measures around the world in consideration of regional conditions.

The supply of electricity is growing increasingly dependent on the weather as the share of renewable energies increases. Different measures can nevertheless maintain grid reliability and quality. These include the use of storage technologies, upgrades of the grid and options for responsiveness to supply and demand. This paper focuses on demand side management and the use of flexibility in production processes. First, the framework of Germany’s energy policy is presented and direct and indirect incentives for businesses to seek as well as to provide flexibility capabilities are highlighted. Converting this framework into a mixed integer program leads to multi-objective optimization. The challenge inherent to this method is realistically mapping the different objectives that affect business practices directly and indirectly in a variety of laws. An example is introduced to demonstrate the complexity of the model and examine the energy flexibility. Second, manufacturing companies’ energy efficiency is assessed under the frequently occurring conditions of heavily aggregated energy consumption data and of information with insufficient depth of detail to perform certain analyses, formulate actions or optimize processes. The findings obtained from the energy assessment and energy consumption projections are used to model the production system’s energy efficiency and thus facilitate optimization. Methods of data mining and machine learning are employed to project energy consumption. Aggregated energy consumption data and different production and environmental parameters are used to assess indirectly measured consumers and link projections of energy consumption with the production schedule.

The state of Pará has the fifth largest cattle herd in Brazil at 20.3 million heads, and beef cattle breeding accounts for 44.32% of the agricultural production value. Using a recursive econometric model estimated by the generalized method of moments, we evaluated the effects of variables that define the supply and demand of slaughtered beef cattle from 1990 to 2015. The results showed that supply and demand were inelastic to prices. Increases in rural salary and calf prices negatively affected supply, and the response to rural credit applications occurred with a four-year lag due to the biological and technological characteristics of production systems. Deforestation tended to increase the supply of cattle and slaughterhouses appropriated the largest share of the economic surplus generated. There were productivity gains since the early 1990s, with the yield of slaughtered animals was 230.55 kg for cattle and 182.25 kg for cows, while currently, it is 276 and 202.5 kg, respectively. The creation of the Agriculture and Livestock Defense Agency of the State of Pará had a positive effect on the supply of cattle and the expansion of agroindustry structure, contributing to the supply of large markets with higher quality beef.
