New and prior valid records of the endemic eastern Nearctic species Rasvena terna (Frison, 1942) were compiled and a dot distribution map is provided. Rasvena terna is reported from Canada (Quebec) for the first time. External reproductive morphology of adult males and adult females were studied across this species range. Scanning electron microscopy images of reproductive structures and the larval mandible are presented for the first time.

Sarcophaga (Hoa) membranijuxta sp. nov. is described from the Chinese provinces Guangxi and Hainan and documented with illustrations, photographs and scanning electron microscopy images. The habitus and male terminalia of Sarcophaga (Hoa) basiseta Baranov, 1931 are documented with photographs for the first time, and the circumscription and distribution of the subgenus Hoa Rohdendorf, 1937 are updated.

Background and aims. The aim of this work was to increase the knowledge of the bryoflora in Uruguay based on the analysis of samples collected in Fortaleza Santa Teresa National Park (Uruguay). M&M. Specimens were collected, processed and analyzed morphologically using conventional techniques for bryophytes. Microscopic characters were observed and illustrated with light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results. Calymperaceae Kindb. is recorded for the first time to the country, represented by Syrrhopodon gaudichaudii Mont. This species is characterized by leaves strongly crispate when dry, and margins smooth to dentate at the apex. Conclusions. A detailed description, illustrations with SEM and LM, and a distribution map of S. gaudichaudii is here presented.

Currently, due to the intensive development of high-tech science-intensive medical and research devices, more and more attention is paid to the development of diagnostics of rare and difficult to diagnose diseases. It is known that among numerous nephropathies, hematuria may be the only symptom of kidney and urinary tract diseases, which complicates their diagnosis and treatment. In order to develop new approaches for the diagnosis of nephropathies, the authors have been studying the morphology of red blood cells in the blood and urine of children and adults using a scanning electron microscope for several years. The paper presents the results of studies of children with various kidney diseases, including IgA-nephropathy, and chronic glomerulonephritis. Scanning electron microscopy was used for the first time to detect nanoparticles on the surface of red blood cells, the size of which is comparable to the size of viruses, which became the basis for one of the authors ' assumptions, namely, the possible transport of certain types of viruses by red blood cells. Thus, some kidney diseases could be considered virus-associated. This paper presents for the first time the results of determining the glomerular filtration rate of both kidneys separately in the study of separate kidney function and of the study of urine smears obtained during catheterization of the ureters in patients with hydronephrosis of one of the kidneys by scanning electron microscopy. As in previous studies, nanoparticles were found on the surface of red blood cells, which leads to the conclusion about the possible viral nature of the disease of the considered patient. In addition, smear images obtained using a microscope showed a significant difference in the elements of the right and left kidneys urine, which did not contradict the data on the study of glomerular filtration rate. According to the authors, the capabilities of the scanning electron microscope can be applied in fundamental research of kidney diseases at the cellular and molecular levels, forming new ideas about their origin, as well as on the basis of which new methods of non-invasive diagnostics can be built.

AbstractPolystachya is a large, pantropical orchid genus of 200 species, most of which occur as epiphytes in sub-saharan Africa. The three-lobed labellum of most Polystachya species possesses a fleshy callus and various types of trichomes and papillae. In this paper, we present the results of micromorphological studies on the labellum of 20 species, representing eight of the 13 sections in the genus, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Our results show the scale of infrageneric diversity of trichomes and papillae relative to the sampled sections. They also demonstrate the taxonomic value of labellar micromorphology at the sectional level. The study revealed seven types of papillae and five types of trichomes (uni- and multi-cellular) in Polystachya, some of which, are described here for the first time. Clavate trichomes are the most common and are present in 60% of the species studied. Moniliform trichomes mainly occur in sect. Polystachya and are strongly characteristic of the section. Pseudopollen is formed by fragmentation of moniliform trichomes or the detachment of other trichomes as bicellular units. We provide, for the first time, evidence for the detachment of the terminal cells of capitate trichomes.

Abstract This work intends to apprehend and emphasize the contribution of image-processing techniques and computer vision in the treatment of clay-based material known in Meknes region. One of the various characteristics used to describe clay in a qualitative manner is porosity, as it is considered one of the properties that with “kill or cure” effectiveness. For this purpose, we use scanning electron microscopy images, as they are considered the most powerful tool for characterising the quality of the microscopic pore structure of porous materials. We present various existing methods of segmentation, as we are interested only in pore regions. The results show good matching between physical estimation and Voronoi diagram-based porosity estimation.

In this work, a mechanically durable anticorrosion superhydrophobic coating is developed using a nanocomposite coating solution composed of silica nanoparticles and epoxy resin. The nanocomposite coating developed was tested for its superhydrophobic behavior using goniometry; surface morphology using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy; elemental composition using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy; corrosion resistance using atomic force microscopy; and potentiodynamic polarization measurements. The nanocomposite coating possesses hierarchical micro/nanostructures, according to the scanning electron microscopy images, and the presence of such structures was further confirmed by the atomic force microscopy images. The developed nanocomposite coating was found to be highly superhydrophobic as well as corrosion resistant, according to the results from static contact angle measurement and potentiodynamic polarization measurement, respectively. The abrasion resistance and mechanical durability of the nanocomposite coating were studied by abrasion tests, and the mechanical properties such as reduced modulus and Berkovich hardness were evaluated with the aid of nanoindentation tests.

ABSTRACT The aggregation of mycobacterial cells in a definite order, forming microscopic structures that resemble cords, is known as cord formation, or cording, and is considered a virulence factor in the M ycobacterium tuberculosis complex and the species M ycobacterium marinum. In the 1950s, cording was related to a trehalose dimycolate lipid that, consequently, was named the cord factor. However, modern techniques of microbial genetics have revealed that cording can be affected by mutations in genes not directly involved in trehalose dimycolate biosynthesis. Therefore, questions such as “How does mycobacterial cord formation occur?” and “Which molecular factors play a role in cord formation?” remain unanswered. At present, one of the problems in cording studies is the correct interpretation of cording morphology. Using optical microscopy, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between cording and clumping, which is a general property of mycobacteria due to their hydrophobic surfaces. In this work, we provide a new way to visualize cords in great detail using scanning electron microscopy, and we show the first scanning electron microscopy images of the ultrastructure of mycobacterial cords, making this technique the ideal tool for cording studies. This technique has enabled us to affirm that nonpathogenic mycobacteria also form microscopic cords. Finally, we demonstrate that a strong correlation exists between microscopic cords, rough colonial morphology, and increased persistence of mycobacteria inside macrophages.

AbstractMorphological features of oospores of a rarely noted species Chara braunii Gmel. were examined in a local population (fishpond near Tuplice village, Ziemia Lubuska region, mid-western Poland). The largest polar axis (LPA, length), largest equatorial diameter (LED, width), isopolarity index (ISI = LPA/LED* 100), and the number of ridges and width of fossa of 90 oospores were measured. Additionally, the oospore wall ornamentation pattern was examined by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). As a result, a cylindrical shape and the lack of so-called “shoulder” were found. Oospore length and width ranged between 466.8–600.1 µm and 250.1–366.7 µm, respectively, with the ISI index values between 148 and 213. The number of ridges was 8–10 and the width of fossa varied between 50.0 and 66.7 µm. The oospore width appeared to be the most changeable feature, whereas, by contrast, the number of ridges was the least variable character. Wall ornamentation can be described as tuberculate and a ribbon was present on the ridges. As a comparative material for the study performed, 9 oospores from Professor Izabela Dąmbska’s Collection of Charophytes of Poland were measured. It was evidenced that variation ranges of most of the features of Chara braunii oospores from Tuplice fishpond are similar to those of Professor Dąmbska’s herbarium materials and to data reported by authors from other countries as well. The morphology of reproductive structures does not follow the variation of thalli characteristics.
