A method for the preparation of pure amorphous Fe2O3 powder with particle size of 25 nm is reported in this article. Pure amorphous Fe2O3 can be simply synthesized by the sonication of neat Fe(CO)5 or its solution in decalin under an air atmosphere. The Fe2O3 nanoparticles are converted to crystalline Fe3O4 nanoparticles when heated to 420 °C under vacuum or when heated to the same temperature under a nitrogen atmosphere. The crystalline Fe3O4 nanoparticles were characterized by x-ray diffraction and M¨ossbauer spectroscopy. The Fe2O3 amorphous nanoparticles were examined by Transmission Electron Micrography (TEM), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Quantum Design SQUID magnetization measurements. The magnetization of pure amorphous Fe2O3 at room temperature is very low (<1.5 emu/g) and it crystallizes at 268 °C.

The influences of Gd concentration on martensitic transformation and magnetic properties of NiMnIn alloys were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) , vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and etc. It is Observed through the experiment: the addition of Gd enhances martensite transition temperature;X-ray diffraction analysis of experimental alloys is revealed that to the mixture is martensite and austenite at room temperature; content of Gd is not proportional to the improvement of magnetic property.

The crystal structure and thermal properties of the [Formula: see text] compound have been investigated. Structural studies were performed by X-ray diffraction at room temperature. The crystal structure of this compound was found to correspond to the hexagonal symmetry of the space group P61. Thermal properties were studied using a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found in the temperature range [Formula: see text] that thermal effects occur at temperatures [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. The thermodynamic parameters of these effects are calculated.

AbstractThe crystallization of amorphous Si in a Al/Si multilayer (with a modulation length of about 120Å) was investigated using transmission electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. Amorphous Si was found to crystallize at about 175 °C with the heat of reaction of 11±2(kJ/mol). Al grains grow prior to the nucleation of crystalline Si. The crystalline Si was found to nucleate within the grown Al layers. The incipient crystalline Si initially grows within the Al layer and then spreads through the amorphous Si and other Al layers. Because of extensive intermixing, the original layered structure is destroyed. The Al(111) texture is also enhanced.

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and x-ray diffraction (XRD) investigations were conducted on the hot-pressed Ti2SnC bulk ceramic. Microstructure features of bulk Ti2SnC ceramic were characterized by using TEM, and a needle-shaped β-Sn precipitation was observed inside Ti2SnC grains with the orientation relationship: (0001) Ti2SnC // (200) Sn and Ti2SnC // [001] Sn. With the combination of DSC and XRD analyses, the precipitation of metallic Sn was demonstrated to be a thermal stress-induced process during the cooling procedure. The reheating temperature, even as low as 400 °C, could trigger the precipitation of Sn from Ti2SnC, which indicated the low-temperature instability of Ti2SnC. A substoichiometry Ti2SnxC formed after depletion of Sn from ternary Ti2SnC phase. Under electron beam irradiation, metallic Sn was observed diffusing back into Ti2SnxC. Furthermore, a new Ti7SnC6 phase with the lattice constants of a = 0.32 and c = 4.1 nm was identified and added in the Ti-Sn-C ternary system.

AbstractThe present work reports a simple and easy wet chemistry synthesis of cuprous oxide (Cu2O) nanospheres at room temperature without surfactants and using different precursors. Structural characterization was carried out by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy coupled with focused ion beam and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The optical band gaps were determined from diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The photoluminescence behavior of the as-synthesized nanospheres showed significant differences depending on the precursors used. The Cu2O nanospheres were constituted by aggregates of nanocrystals, in which an on/off emission behavior of each individual nanocrystal was identified during transmission electron microscopy observations. The thermal behavior of the Cu2O nanospheres was investigated with in situ X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry experiments. Remarkable structural differences were observed for the nanospheres annealed in air, which turned into hollow spherical structures surrounded by outsized nanocrystals.

Crystal polymorphs and multiple crystallization pathways of a room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) were observed only under high pressure (HP). The RTIL was 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium nitrate, [C2mim][NO3]. The HP-crystal polymorphs were related to conformations of the C2mim+ cation, and the HP-crystal pathways determined by the presence or absence of the planar′ (P′) conformation of the C2mim+ cation were switched at the bifurcation pressure (PB). Above PB, modulated crystal structures derived from the HP-inherent P′ conformer. Simultaneous X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry measurements, accompanied by optical microscope observations, confirmed the normal low-temperature crystallization of [C2mim][NO3] under ambient pressure.

Solid Ln-OHCO3-DMCP compounds, where Ln represents lanthanides (III) and yttrium (III) ions and DMCP is the anion 4-dimethylaminocinnamylidenepyruvate, have been prepared. Thermogravimetry, derivative thermogravimetry (TG, DTG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), x-Ray diffraction powder patterns and elemental analysis have been used to characterize the compounds. The thermal stability as well as the thermal decomposition of these compounds were studied using an alumina crucible in an air atmosphere.

The influences of Gd concentration on martensitic transformation and magnetic properties of NiMnIn alloys were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) , vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and etc. It shows that addition of Gd enhances martensite transition temperature and that X-ray diffraction analysis of experimental alloys is revealed which the mixture is martensite and austenite at room temperature. These alloys show promise as a metamagnetic shape memory alloy with magnetic-field-induced shape memory effect.

Carbon-encapsulated Cobalt nanoparticles were synthesized with sucrose as carbon source and cobalt nitrate as metal source in nitrogen atmosphere. The weight of purified sample could arrive around 12-20 grams at one time. The as-prepared CECNPs sample was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction technique (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and Raman spectroscopy. The results showed CECNPs was typical core / shell structure on nanometer scale, the core was cobalt single crystal, the shell was graphitic carbon, and the particle size was about 30nm. The magnetic measurement revealed that CECNPs was ferromagnetic material with the quite small remanent magnetizations Mr of 3.7emu/g and coercive forces Hc of 275Oe at room temperature.
