The thermal decomposition of brominated butyl rubber under air atmosphere was investigated by thermogravimetry (TG) and derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) at various heating rates. The kinetic parameters were evaluated by TG and the isoconversional method developed by Ozawa. One prominent decomposition stage was observed in the DTG curves at high heating rates, while an additional small peak was observed at low heating rates. The apparent activation energy determined using the TG method ranged from 219.31 to 228.13 kJ·mol−1 at various heating rates. The non-isothermal degradation was found to be a first-order reaction, and the activation energy, as determined by the isoconversional method, increased with an increase in mass loss. The kinetic data suggest that brominated butyl rubber has excellent thermal stability. This study can indirectly aid in improving rubber pyrolysis methods and in enhancing the heat resistance of materials.

AbstractHerein, novel magnetic nanoparticles with pyridinium bridges namely Fe3O4@SiO2@PCLH-TFA through a multi-step pathway were designed and synthesized. The desired catalyst and its corresponding precursors were characterized with different techniques such as Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, Mass spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, thermogravimetric/derivative thermogravimetry (TG/DTG) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). In addition, the catalytic application of the prepared catalyst in the synthesis of new series of triarylpyridines bearing sulfonate and sulfonamide moieties via a cooperative vinylogous anomeric-based oxidation was highlighted. The current trend revealed that the mentioned catalyst shows high recoverability in the reported synthesis.

Four of the coordination compounds of the general formula, [M(DPPP)(APY)(H2O) Cl2].xH2O, where M = Ni(II), Cu(II), Mn(II), and Fe(II) and x = 0, 1, or 2 molecules of H2O, DPPP = 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane, and APY = 2-aminopyridine, have been prepared and characterized. The structure of the complexes has been confirmed by elemental analysis, FT-IR, and UV-Vis spectral data. Thermal analysis (thermogravimetry, derivative thermogravimetry, and differential thermal studies) has been used to study the thermal decomposition stages. Biological activity of all synthesized complexes was tested against five bacterial strains and three fungal strains. Bacteria and fungi strains are common contaminants of the environment in Saudi Arabia, some of which are frequently reported from contaminated water, soil, and food.

The co-combustion characteristics and kinetics of torrefied sugarcane bagasse (TB), lignite (L), and their blended samples were experimentally investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and derivative thermogravimetry (DTG)based on the Coats-Redfern method for kinetic estimation.Their physicochemical properties were also investigated.Raw bagasse was thermally treated in a laboratory-scale torrefactor at 275 °C with a torrefaction time of 60 min under an inert nitrogen environment. Then, the torrefied bagasse was blended with Thai lignite as a co-fuel at ratios of 50:50 (TB50L50), 70;30(TB70L30), and 90:10 (TB90L10), respectively. Torrefaction improved the fuel properties and heating value of the raw bagasse as well as reducing the O/C and H/C ratios. In addition, the blending of torrefied bagasse with lignite improved the combustion behavior. The TGA and DTG results indicated that the ignition and burnout temperatures stepped downwards with different increasing ratios of torrefied bagasse. The co-combustion behavior at the maximum burning rate showed that the burnout temperatures of TB50L50, TB70L30, and TB90L10 were 532, 529, and 528 °C, respectively, indicating a slight decrease with an increasing torrefied bagasse blending ratio. These results were sufficient to provide comprehensive guidelines in terms of the design and operation of the combustion system for adding torrefied bagasse into the co-firing process.

Magnetic Ni-Mn mixed oxides based on nanoparticles (NPs) have been developed at 700 °C using a ceramic method and a glycine-assisted auto combustion path. The thermogravimetry–derivative thermogravimetry (TG—DTG), infrared radiation (IR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and high resolution transmittance electron micrographs (HRTEM) techniques have been used to characterize as synthesized nanomaterials by evaluating their thermal behavior, structure, distinguishing the components and establishing the morphology. A vibrating sample magnetometer has been used to estimate the magnetic properties of the materials (VSM). The analyses indicate that using a glycine-assisted auto combustion method resulted in formation of cubic spinel NiMn2O4 NPs as a single phase. The ceramic process, from the other side, led to the development of Mn2O3/NiMnO3/NiMn2O4 nanocomposite. The resulting particles being polycrystalline, including average sizes ranging from 10 to 80 nanometers. The prepared NiMn2O4 NPs showed room-temperature ferromagnetism, with an optimal saturation magnetization value of 5.0216 emu/g, according to the magnetic measurement.

AbstractCoir is one of the most important natural fibers having significant potentiality in structural biocomposites production. The long coir fiber (LCF) and short fibrous chips (CFC) were extracted from the husk of coconut. The dimensions of the CFC were within 1.0–12.5 mm and the LCF were within 2.0 mm. All the fibers and fibrous chips were treated with 5% NaOH (alkali) before the biocomposite manufacturing. Different percentages (8%, 10%, and 12%) of melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) were used to produce the tri-layered medium density composite panels with 12 mm thickness. The mechanical properties (tensile, flexural, and internal bonding strengths) of coir reinforced multilayered composites has been studied for all the produced biocomposites. The morphological, micro-structural, and bonding mechanisms were investigated by Scanning electron microscope and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis. Thermal properties of the biocomposites were studied by thermal conductivity, thermogravimetric analysis, and derivative thermogravimetry characterization. The moisture contents of the final composite panels were also investigated in this study. The main objective of this work is to investigate the influences of MUF on treated coir fiber and fibrous chips reinforced tri-layered biocomposites. Beside, a novel sustainable product is developed through reinforcing the fibrous chip with coir fiber in terms of multilayered biocomposite panels.

AbstractAlthough there have been many instances of ship collision at sea in recent times, not much research has been conducted on the topic. In this study, paint from an actual site of ship collision was collected and analyzed as evidence. The amount of evidence collected from the ships involved in the collision is either small or has inconsistent morphology. In addition, the contaminants and samples are often mixed in this evidence, making its analysis difficult. Paint traces of the damaged ship and the ship suspected to be responsible for the collision were compared through scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDS), attenuated total reflection–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR–FTIR), thermogravimetry (TG) and derivative thermogravimetry (DTG), and pyrolysis–gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py–GC/MS) analyses. The ship responsible for the collision could be identified by characterization and by performing a comparative analysis of the extracted paint. Among the methods used in this study, Py–GC/MS can sensitively analyze even similar paints, and identified styrene and phthalic anhydride as the most prominent components of the paint used as evidence. The results obtained can be used to investigate the evidence collected from collision sites and to determine the ship responsible for the collision.
