ABSTRACTThe capabilities to monitor tangential force and acoustic emission have been added to the microscratch mode of the IBM microindenter. These two new monitoring devices combined with the existing normal loadcell enhance the ability of the microscratch test to measure mechanical properties of thin film materials. As a demonstration of the upgraded microindenter, scratch tests were performed on 11 0nm and 20nm thick carbon films deposited on Si <100> substrates. The scratch morphology was examined by scanning electron microscopy to correlate the mechanical data to corresponding failure mechanisms.In the case of the 110nm film, a brittle type fracture was taking place as the applied normal load exceeded a critical value. All three monitored outputs detected the first occurrence of the spallation ofthe film. In contrast to the thicker film, large scale spallation was not observed for thle 20nm film, and the acoustic emission detector did not show any significant output. An apparent friction coefficient(FR) is defined as the ratio ofthe tangential force to the normal load. FR is determined to be a useful parameter for monitoring the indenter's transition through the coating into the substrate, particularly in the case of small scale fracturing or simple ploughing through types of failure.

This paper shows that the Mindlin problem involving two spheres in contact under the action of oscillating tangential force can lead to the account of static-kinetic friction transition. In Mindlin’s problem two spheres experience partial slip as a result of application of oscillating tangential load. When the problem is extended to multi-sphere contact, i.e. two rough surfaces, the application of tangential oscillating load results in partial slip for some asperity contacts while others experience full slip. Increase in the amplitude of the oscillating tangential force results in more contacts experiencing full slip, thereby decreasing the number of contacts in parial slip. Constitutive relation proposed by Mindlin at small scale, governing asperity interaction, is used to obtain the large scale slip function through a statistical summation of asperity scale events. The slip function establishes the fraction of asperity contact in full slip. The complement of the slip parameter is a fraction of asperities in partial slip. Through slip function it is shown that it is possible to define a slip condition for the entire surface. The derivation of the slip function allows the account of transition between static friction and kinetic friction.

Acoustic emission (AE) technique is widely used in various fields as a reliable nondestructive examination technology. Two experimental tests were carried out in a rock mechanics laboratory, which include (1) small scale direct shear tests of rock bridge with different lengths and (2) large scale landslide model with locked section. The relationship of AE event count and record time was analyzed during the tests. The AE source location technology and comparative analysis with its actual failure model were done. It can be found that whether it is small scale test or large scale landslide model test, AE technique accurately located the AE source point, which reflected the failure generation and expansion of internal cracks in rock samples. Large scale landslide model with locked section test showed that rock bridge in rocky slope has typical brittle failure behavior. The two tests based on AE technique well revealed the rock failure mechanism in rocky slope and clarified the cause of high speed and long distance sliding of rocky slope.

To investigate the characteristics of material removal mechanism in the continuous contour control grinding. It is simplified as a variable speed single grit scratching the surface of quench hardening AISI 5140 steel. Utilizing optical microscope, optical profiling system and displacement transducers, the scratch morphology and force were analyzed with applied normal load (depth) and scratch separation distance. Piles-up at the sides of the groove is no obvious change with traverse speed pulse. Both the normal force and the tangential force increase with an increase in traverse speed and depth. The change of traverse speed leads to force fluctuating, and then the forces fall down rapidly to a constant value relatively.

The rough surface interaction is viewed as a multi-sphere elastic interaction which upon external application of a tangential force would exhibit partial or full slip depending on the magnitude of the applied tangential force. The use of the slip function is demonstrated in the dynamic response of a block in friction contact at the rough surface interface with a flat wherein the static-kinetic friction transition is correctly addressed.

ABSTRACTTwo series of five diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings were sputtered under nominally identical conditions, but to different film thicknesses of 20 nm and 105 nm. First, the hardness of each sample was determined by depth-sensing indentation. Hardness measurements were substrate-affected to some extent for all samples but especially so for the 20 nm coatings. Two types of scratch tests were performed in an attempt to isolate and characterize the top coatings. The first was a wear test, which consisted of moving the sample back and forth repeatedly under a small constant load. The residual damage was inconsistent, but appeared to be a function of the composite, or substrate-affected hardness. The second test was a single-pass scratch in which the normal load was ramped linearly. For all samples, the friction coefficient was approximately constant as a function of load. Furthermore, samples with the same top coats yielded similar friction coefficients, regardless of the coating thicknesses. Friction coefficient decreased with hydrogen content and to some extent, increased with hardness, as measured on the 105 nm samples. The friction coefficient measured during a ramp-load scratch offers an alternative for characterizing ultra-thin films, when indentation alone yields measurements that are significantly affected by the substrate.

IPA Integrated is a place for students to study themselves and the surrounding environment applied in daily life. Integrated IPA Learning provides a direct experience to students through the use and development of scientific skills and attitudes. The importance of integrated IPA requires to pack learning well, integrated IPA integration with the preparation of modules combined with learning strategy can maximize the learning process in school. In SMP 209 Jakarta, the value of the integrated IPA is obtained from 34 students there are 10 students completed and 24 students are not complete because they get the value below the KKM of 68. This research is a development study with the development model of ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). The use of KPS-based integrated IPA modules (Science Process sSkills) on the theme of rainbow phenomenon obtained by media expert validation results with an average score of 84.38%, average material expert 82.18%, average linguist 75.37%. So the average of all aspects obtained by 80.55% is worth using and tested to students. The results of the teacher response obtained 88.69% value with excellent criteria. Student responses on a small scale acquired an average score of 85.19% with highly agreed criteria and on the large-scale student response gained a yield of 86.44% with very agreed criteria. So the module can be concluded receiving a good response by the teacher and students.

In Vietnam, the construction of hydropower projects has contributed significantly in the cause of industrialization and modernization of the country. The place where hydropower projects are built is mostly inhabited by ethnic minorities - communities that rely primarily on land, a very important source of livelihood security. In the context of the lack of common productive land in resettlement areas, the orientation for agricultural production is to promote indigenous knowledge combined with increasing scientific and technical application; shifting from small-scale production practices to large-scale commodity production. However, the research results of this article show that many obstacles in the transition process are being posed such as limitations on natural resources, traditional production thinking or the suitability and effectiveness of scientific - technical application models. When agricultural production does not ensure food security, a number of implications for people’s lives are increasingly evident, such as poverty, preserving cultural identity, social relations and resource protection. Since then, it has set the role of the State in researching and building appropriate agricultural production models to exploit local strengths and ensure sustainability.

Recent floods in Ghana are largely blamed on mining activities. Not only are lives lost through these floods, farms andproperties are destroyed as a result. Water resources are diverted, polluted and impounded upon by both large-scale minersand small-scale miners. Although these activities are largely blamed on behavioural attitudes that need to be changed, thereare legal dimensions that should be addressed as well. Coincidentally, a great proportion of the water resources of Ghana arewithin these mining areas thus the continual pollution of these surface water sources is a serious threat to the environmentand the development of the country as a whole. The environmental laws need to be oriented properly with adequate sanctionsto tackle the impacts mining has on water resources. The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) procedure needs to bestreamlined and undertaken by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and not the company itself.
