ABSTRACTThe mechanical properties of sputtered Ni-Al2O3 granular thin films were investigated by low load microharaness testing. It was found that the microhardness of these films displayed a percolation threshold at a nickel volume fraction of about 0.6, below which the hardness is greatly enhanced. This behavior is qualitatively similar to the electrical and magnetic properties of these types of films. A percolation threshold in hardness can be understood as due to a change in the mechanism for plastic deformation.

Dynamic plastic deformation (DPD) achieved by multipass hammer forging is one of the most important metal forming operations to create the excellent materials properties. By using the integrated approaches of optical microscope and scanning electron microscope, the forging temperature effects on the multipass hammer forging process and the forged properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloy were evaluated and the forging samples were controlled with a total height reduction of 50% by multipass strikes from 925°C to 1025°C. The results indicate that the forging temperature has a significant effect on morphology and the volume fraction of primary α phase, and the microstructural homogeneity is enhanced after multipass hammer forging. The alloy slip possibility and strain rates could be improved by multipass strikes, but the marginal efficiency decreases with the increased forging temperature. Besides, a forging process with an initial forging temperature a bit above β transformation and finishing the forging a little below the β transformation is suggested to balance the forging deformation resistance and forged mechanical properties.

Magneto-rheological elastomer( MR elastomer) is an emerging intelligent material made up of macromolecule polymer and magnetic particles. While a promising wide application it has in the fields of warships vibration controlling for its controllable mechanical, electrical and magnetic properties by external magnetic field, design and application of devices based on it are facing great limitations imposed by its poor performance in mechanical properties and magneto effect. Aiming at developing a practical MR elastomer, a new confecting method was proposed in this paper. Then, following this new method and using a specificly designed solidifying matrix, an amido- polyester MR elastomer was developed with its mechanical property systemically explored.

ABSTRACTThin films of lanthanum manganates doped with Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+ and Pb2+ have been deposited on Si(100) substrate and their electrical and magnetic properties were discussed with respect to the composition, structure and nature of the dopant. Buffer layers of YSZ and La0.8Al0.2O3 were employed and their effect on the materials was studied. Interesting magnetotransport properties were found in some of the films, where there is a large difference between the insulator-metal transition temperature and a ferromagnetic transition temperature.
