ABSTRACTThe recent achievements of critical current densities in excess of 1MA/cm2 at 77K in YBCO films deposited over appropriate bi-axially textured buffer layers/metal substrates have stimulated interest in the potential future applications of coated conductors at liquid nitrogen temperature and high magnetic fields, which are called as the next/second generation tape conductors. Several different processes for obtaining the bi-axially textured buffer layers/metal substrates as well as thicker film deposition processes and non-vacuum processes are reviewed. This paper reviews the research goals of the project including the recent development of the related research by individual research group in Japan.

A single layer of La2Zr2O7 (LZO), deposited on textured Ni and Ni–1.7% Fe–3% W (Ni–W) tapes by a low-cost sol-gel process, is used as buffer layer for the growth of YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) coated conductors. It is shown for the first time that such single buffer layers can be used for the deposition of YBCO yielding critical current densities (Jc) that are comparable to those typically obtained using CeO2/YSZ/Y2O2 trilayers on identical substrates, i.e., in excess of 1 MA/cm2 at 77 K and self-field. The properties of the YBCO films and the dependence of Jc on thickness of the LZO layer are investigated.

Single, epitaxial buffer layers of insulating LaMnO3 (LMO) or conductive La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) have been grown by sputter deposition on biaxially textured Ni and Ni–alloy substrates. We report baseline investigations of their compatibility with the Yba2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) coatings and demonstrate biaxially textured YBCO films grown by pulsed-laser deposition on these single-buffered tapes. Superconducting property characterizations revealed better properties for YBCO films on LMO-buffered tapes relative to those grown on LSMO layers. Self-field critical current densities (Jc) exceeding 1 × 106 A/cm2 at 77 K have been obtained for the YBCO (200 nm) films on LMO-buffer layers. These results offer prospects for the use of single, LMO-buffered metal tapes in the development of practical YBCO-coated conductors.

A new approach for the production of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) oxide buffer layers directly on metal rolling-assisted biaxially textured substrates (RABiTS) is described in this paper. This represents a significant advance over existing techniques and avoids the need for complicated steps to avoid substrate oxidation during direct deposition of oxides. Current densities of about 1 MA/cm2 have been achieved for YBa2Cu3O7-δ layers on the YSZ buffer, with an intermediate CeO2 layer. The process consists of reactive sputtering of a YxZr1−xN film directly on the RABiTS, which adopts its biaxial texture. This nitride film is then converted to YSZ via a thermal oxidation step. The YSZ films retain the texture of the nitride film (and of the RABiTS) through local syntaxy. In many cases, YSZ films exhibit improved biaxial texture over that of the RABiTS substrate. Nitrides can be sputter deposited at much higher rates relative to oxides, making the approach industrially scalable and economical.

AbstractThis article reports on the development of second-generation Y1Ba2Cu3O7–(YBCO)-coated conductors deposited on biaxially textured MgO templates fabricated using ion-beam-assisted deposition (IBAD).The materials system architecture and processing techniques used to achieve high critical supercurrents on flexible superalloy substrates is described. The texturing of YBCO films on metal substrates approaches that of films deposited on single-crystal oxide substrates.Critical currents and critical current densities of YBCO films on metal substrates are also equivalent to YBCO films deposited on single-crystal oxides.

This study shows that biaxially textured SmxZr1−xOy(SZO) with a wide range of compositions (0.06 <x< 0.75) can be grown directly on ion-beam-assisted deposition (IBAD) MgO template using reactive cosputtering. The SZO crystal structure can be changed, and the lattice parameter can be tailored (from 5.23 to 5.49 Å) by changing the composition. We have developed a simplified high-temperature superconducting coated conductor using SZO as the buffer layer. YBa2Cu3O7−δ(YBCO) films grown by pulsed laser deposition on the SZO buffered IBAD MgO have self-field critical current densities (Jc) in the 2–4 MA/cm2range. The in-field measurements demonstrate that high-quality YBCO films can be grown on SZO buffered IBAD MgO. The present results are especially important because they were obtained on coated conductors with the simpler architecture by eliminating the additional homoepitaxial layer of MgO. This translates in faster production and lower manufacturing cost.

Sol-gel processing of La2Zr2O7 (LZO) buffer layers on biaxially textured Ni–1.7% Fe–3% W alloy substrates using a continuous reel-to-reel dip-coating unit has been studied. The epitaxial LZO films obtained have a strong cube texture and uniform microstructure. The effects of increasing the annealing speed on the texture, microstructure, and carbon content retained in the film were studied. On top of the LZO films, epitaxial layers of yttria-stabilized zirconia and Ceria (CeO2) were deposited using rf sputtering, and YBa2Cu3Ox (YBCO) films were then deposited using pulsed laser deposition. Critical current densities (Jc) of 1.9 MA/cm2 at 77 K and self-field and 0.34 MA/cm2at 77 K and 0.5 T have been obtained on these films. These values are comparable to those obtained on YBCO films deposited on all-vacuum deposited buffer layers and the highest ever obtained using solution seed layers.
