In order to learn more about the existence, abundance, and distribution of postsmolt Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in the Labrador Sea, exploratory fishing was done with surface-set gill nets in early autumn of 1987 and 1988. In total, there were 468 salmon of various sea ages captured, of which 207 were postsmolts. The high catch rates compared with catch rates from Greenland suggest that the population of postsmolts in the Labrador Sea may be large. Postsmolts from rivers in Maine to Labrador were caught in the Labrador Sea, as indicated by Carlin tags and river age distribution from scale reading. The highest catch rates of postsmolts occurred in the Labrador Sea between 56° and 58°N latitude.

Cestodes are parasitic flatworms that live in the digestive tract of vertebrates as adults and often in the liver, muscle, haemocoel, mesentery and brain of various animals as larval stages. To identify the cestodes infecting Clarias gariepinus Burchell, 1822 (sharptooth catfish) in the Vaal Dam, a total of 45 host specimens were collected with the aid of gill nets between October 2011, January and April 2012. The fish were sacrificed and examined for cestode parasites. Two adult cestodes, Tetracampos ciliotheca Wedl, 1861 (prevalence 86.7%, mean intensity = 15, n = 45) and Proteocephalus glanduligerus (Janicki, 1928) (prevalence 51.1%, mean intensity = 5, n = 45) were found in the intestines of the catfish. Both T. ciliotheca and P. glanduligerus are new locality records. There were statistically insignificant differences in the infection of the male and female C. gariepinu. Fish with standard length ranging from 40 cm – 54 cm (≥ 3 years) had the highest prevalence and mean intensity while those ranging from 10 cm – 24 cm (< 1 year) had the lowest prevalence and mean intensity for both cestodes. The study highlights the importance of changing feeding habits of C. gariepinus with age on the prevalence and mean intensity of the two gastrointestinal cestode parasites.

The Pirarara and Tamarupa rivers are two urban tributaries of the Machado River in Cacoal municipality, state of Rondônia (RO), Brazil. Here we report a list of species of fishes from urban areas of Cacoal, being the first ichthyological study in this region. Field work at Cacoal was carried out from November 2004 until July 2005, using gill nets, casting nets, and long lines. Two hundred and twenty-two specimens were collected, and are distributed in 48 species, 14 families and 4 orders. The most representative order was Characiformes, with seven families and 23 species, followed by Siluriformes, with three families and 20 species.

Gill nets is the most dominant fishing gear used by fishermen in Kampung Nelayan Village. Gill nets 2 and 3 inches are widely used by traditional fishermen and modern fishermen because this tool is very practical to catch fish also friendly to the environment. This study aims to determine the construction and friendliness of fishing gear gill nets 2 and 3 inches which include the length of the net, the width of the net, shortening, buoyancy and sinking power. This research was carried out in the Village of Kampung Nelayan, Tungkal Ilir Subdistrict, Tanjung Jabung Barat District in February 2018. The method used in this research was survey method. The data obtained were analyzed using net dimension analysis and descriptive statistical analysis. Based on the results of research on the construction of 2 and 3 inches gill nets consisting of nylon monofilament made from transparent colors. The knot used by the English knot. Top rope, float, and float buoy made from polyethylene (PE) rope and ballast rope made from polypropylene (PP). The sinker made from tin and gill net 3 inch weight based on bracelet-shaped wire.Net shortening value of 2 inch is 51.75% and has a buoyancy of 3.05 kgf and a sinking power of 9.97 kgf. As well as the value of gill shortening 3 inch 50.62% and the buoyancy generated 6.22 kgf and the sinking power of 365.4 kgf. The value of environmental friendliness of 2 and 3 inch nets has a value of 31.25 and 30.75 and is classified as environmentally friendly fishing gear.

Age and growth of Varicorhinus damascinus (Val.) in Tigris river at Salahuldin province have been investigated. Monthly samples were taken during the period from September 1999 to August 2000, using small-meshed gill nets. The age data showed that there were six age groups and the dominant age groups were (III – IV) for both sexes. The results of the present study revealed that the increment in length of V. damascinus at the sites of study showed a tendency to decrease with the increase in age, after the third year of life in both sexes. The length-weight relationship of males and females were calculated and demonstrated in a straight line logarithmic formula, as follows: Log W = 1.5404 + 2.6885 log L for males r = 0.95 (P > 0.05) Log W = 1.6723 + 2.7877 log L for females r = 0.77 (P > 0.05) The values of the regression coefficient (b) indicated that the growth of both sexes of V. damascinus was allometric..

On the 14th of June, 2005, in the Danube side channel "Jojkic" (N 44?50'33.1??, E 20?27'46.1??) near Belgrade, we recorded the presence of A. melas, ranging in weight (W) from 11.2 g to 135.6 g, and standard length (Ls) from 70 mm to 173 mm. Specimens were obtained from professional fishermen, who caught them with gill nets, as well from sport fishermen using fishing roads. Also, on 28th of May, 2005, on the lake "Savsko jezero" (N 44?47'20.1??, E 20?24'54.6??), we collected two specimens with gill nets. They were held in an aquarium until the 20th of June, when they were analyzed. Their weight (W) was 48.8 g and 97.5 g, their standard length (Ls) 145 mm and 183 mm, respectively.
