Mangrove forests are tropical coastal vegetation communities, which has the ability to grow in coastal area with tidal and muddy environment. Several functions of mangrove forest such as ecological functions can be used for coastal protection, trapping sediment and strengthen the coastal ecosystems. Coastal waters in Dompu Regency, West Nusa Tenggara have natural mangrove ecosystem with a huge potency and advantages to the region. This study aimed to understand the condition of mangrove ecosystem based on satellite image analysis of Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) in 2014 and assess the potency, information related to the utilization by community. Data collection in this study were combined from satellite imagery interpretation with interview and questionnaires. The results showed that the mangrove forest extent in Dompu Regency Coastal Waters were about 90,631 ha with uniformity index 0.68 (medium uniformity). Two mangrove species were found in the region namely Rhizopora stylosa and Rhizopora apiculata and used by the community for several purposes such as firewood, natural coastal protection from tidal, waves and abrasion, also for crabs and fish spawning ground.

Mangrove forests have high ecological, economic and social values ??which function to maintain shoreline stability, protect beaches and riverbanks, filter and remediate waste, and to withstand floods and waves. The facts show that mangrove damage is everywhere, even the intensity of damage and its area tends to increase significantly. Many roles of mangroves require proper management to maintain the existence of mangroves. One way to determine the area of ??mangroves is by processing Landsat 8 satellite imagery. The stages of mangrove identification are carried out by using 564 RGB band merger, then separating the mangrove and non-mangrove objects. Next step is to analyze the density of mangroves using NDVI formula. To maximize monitoring of mangrove area, an android application was created that provides information on the area and density of mangroves at several locations, namely Clungup, Bangsong Teluk Asmara and Cengkrong from 2015 to 2018.The results showed that Landsat 8 satellite imagery can be used to identify changes in the area of ??mangrove forests with good accuracy, namely in the Clungup area of ??90% and Cengkrong of 86.67%. From processing results, the mangrove area in the Clungup area has also decreased from 2015 to 2017 but has increased in 2018 so that the application provides recommendations for embroidering mangroves in 2016 to 2017 and mangrove recommendations are maintained in 2018. As for Bangsong Teluk area Asmara and Cengkrong have increased the area of ??mangroves every year so that the application provides recommendations to be maintained from 2016 to 2018.

Study of the function of mangrove forests as a sediment trap has been largely undertaken using field measurement methods, but only a few researches that fully utilize remote sensing data to find out the influence of mangrove forest’s area changes against the Total Suspended Matter (TSM) making this study very interesting and important to do.  This research was conducted in Perancak estuary area which is one of mangrove ecosystem area in Bali besides West Bali National Park, Benoa Forest Park and Nusa Lembongan. The data used to generate TSM information and change of mangrove forest area in this research is medium resolution satellite image data, Landsat.  Tidal data and rainfall data were used as a supporting data. The information of TSM concentration obtained by using Budhiman (2004) algorithm, shows that along with the increasing of mangrove forest area has caused the decreasing of TSM concentration at mouth Perancak river. The decline was caused by sediments trapped and settled around trees or mangrove roots, especially the Rhizophora mangroves. In addition to the increasing of mangrove forest area, the tidal oceanography factor also greatly influences the TSM fluctuation around Perancak river mouth.

Abstract. Warui MW, Manohar S, Obade P. 2020. Current status, utilization, succession and zonation of mangrove ecosystem along Mida Creek, Coast Province, Kenya. Bonorowo Wetlands 10: 32-43. Human activities have resulted in the destruction of mangrove forests, posing a threat to the mangrove ecosystem and the living things that rely on it. From September 2009 through February 2010, researchers studied the current state, usage, succession, and zonation of the mangrove ecosystem along Mida Creek in Kenya's Coast Province. The goals were to assess changes in the floristic composition of the mangrove forest, identify the most preferred mangrove species, investigate whether accessibility determines utilization of mangrove species, investigate whether harvesting of mangroves affects their succession, and investigate the effectiveness of current mangrove forest management policies. The data was collected using the Point-Centered Quarter Method (PCQM) to see if access into the mangrove forest influences their use and if mangrove succession is affected by their use. To evaluate the efficiency of government policies/legislation governing mangrove exploitation and the most favored mangrove species by the local community and other users, questionnaires were circulated and interviews were conducted. Out of the 210 houses in Mida Creek, 136 respondents were interviewed, one from each household. To examine the temporal changes in the floristic composition of the mangrove forest, two sets of aerial images (1992 and 2006) were processed and interpreted. The data from the questionnaires were coded and entered into the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to see if the accessibility of mangroves influences their use. To see if the utilization of mangroves affects their succession, researchers used regression analysis. To evaluate the forest structure, an importance value was derived. To summarize the present mangrove forest management policies and their effectiveness, descriptive statistics were used. Between 1992 and 2006, the floristic composition of the mangrove forest in Mida Creek changed; the area covered by mangroves decreased as follows: Rhizophora mucronata (Rm); 65.09-63.93ha; Avicennia marina (Am); 344.99-310.63ha; Ceriops tagal (Ct); 225.12-223.82ha; Rm and Ct; 52.87-50.22ha; Ct and Am; 143.69- 140.29ha; Rm and Am; 44.36-41.27ha; Rm and Bg; 212.75-199.75ha; Rm and Sonneratia alba (Sa); 47.64-46.32ha; Rm, Ct and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (Bg); 129.07-128.12ha; Rm, Am, Ct, and Bg; 472.44-428.46ha. The number of cut mangroves in the adjacent settlements, center, and shoreline revealed a significant difference (F=3.277; df=2; p=0.040) in the ANOVA test, indicating that accessibility determines consumption. The most favored mangrove species was Rhizophora mucronata, according to the findings. There was a correlation between the number of mangrove seedlings and the number of cut mangroves (F=8.529, df=1, R=0.198, P=0.004), according to regression analysis. The use of mangroves has an impact on their succession. Mangrove utilization policies and legislation have been less effective. The key species in Mida Creek were Rhizophora mucronata and Ceriops tagal. The extent of mangrove forests in Mida Creek has shrunk over time.

Kecamatan Muara Gembong adalah wilayah dengan ekosistem mangrove yang cukup luas dan tersebar. Mangrove adalah kelompok jenis tumbuhan yang tumbuh di sepanjang garis pantai tropis sampai subtropis di suatu lingkungan yang mengandung garam dan bentuk lahan berupa pantai dengan reaksi tanah anaerob. Kondisi ekosistem mangrove sangat peka terhadap gangguan dari luar terutama dari kegiatan pencemaran, konversi hutan mangrove menjadi kawasan non-hutan, ekploitasi hasil mangrove yang berlebihan sehingga terjadi dinamika pada luasan lahannya. Perubahan yang terjadi pada ekosistem mangrove ini dapat berupa penambahan, pengurangan, dan lahan yang tetap. Metode yang dilakukan pada penelitian ini berupa pengolahan data satelit citra Sentinel 2A, Landsat 8, dan Landsat 5 untuk menganalisa sebaran mangrove pada tahun 2009, 2014, dan 2019, serta perubahan yang terjadi. Validasi data dilakukan dengan pengamatan kawasan langsung di lokasi penelitian berdasarkan pengolahan data yang telah dilakukan. Hasil pengolahan data menunjukan di Kecamatan Muara Gembong pada tahun 2009-2019 diketahui terjadi penambahan luasan lahan mangrove sebesar 1017,746 ha dan pengurangan luasan mangrove sebesar 275,37 ha. Selain itu, terdapat pula lahan mangrove yang tetap bertahan pada kurun waktu 2009-2019 seluas 255,057 ha. Sehingga perubahan lahan mangrove yang terjadi di Kecamatan Muara Gembong cenderung mengalami pertambahan luasan lahan mangrove, yaitu sebesar 66% lahan mangrove yang bertambah. Muara Gembong Subdistrict is an area with a wide and scattered mangrove ecosystem. Mangroves are a group of plant species that grow along tropical to subtropical coastlines in an environment that contains salt and landforms in the form of beaches with anaerobic soil reactions. The condition of mangrove ecosystems is very sensitive to outside disturbances, especially from pollution activities, conversion of mangrove forests to non-forest areas, excessive exploitation of mangrove products resulting in dynamics in the area of land. Changes that occur in this mangrove ecosystem can be in the form of addition, subtraction, and permanent land. The method used in this research is the processing of Sentinel 2A, Landsat 8, and Landsat 5 satellite image data to analyze the distribution of mangroves in 2009, 2014 and 2019, and the changes that occur. Data validation is done by direct observation of the area at the research location based on data processing that has been done. The results of data processing showed that in Muara Gembong Subdistrict in 2009-2019 it was known that there was an increase in the area of mangrove land by 1017, 746 ha and reduction in mangrove area by 275.37 ha. In addition, there are also mangrove lands that have survived in the period 2009-2019 covering 255,057 ha. So that changes in mangrove land that occur in Muara Gembong District tend to experience an increase in the area of mangrove land, which is equal to 66% of the mangrove land that is increasing.

This study aims to examine the k-means clustering and region growing segmentation methods to identify and measure the area of mangrove forests in the Southeast Sulawesi province. The image of the area of this study used Landsat 8 satellite imagery. The area of mangrove forest was carried out by calculating the number of pixels identified as mangrove forests with an area density of 900 m2/pixel. The accuracy of the two segmentation methods in calculating the area was compared based on the same area calculated by LAPAN. The overall accuracy of k-means clustering segmentation method has better accuracy, which is 59.26%, than region growing with 33.33% of accuracy. Both image segmentation methods, k-means clustering and region growing, can be used to calculate the area of mangrove forests in the Southeast Sulawesi region using Landsat 8 satellite imagery.

Mangrove forests have important ecological functions as a controller of environmental quality in coastal areas and absorber of atmospheric carbon. The mangrove ecosystem has a unique vegetation structure which form vegetation zonation that consists of different forest stands characteristics and tree species. This study aims to analyze the relationship between vegetation structural properties and the estimated aboveground carbon (AGC) stock of mangrove forest in Bedul mangrove, Banyuwangi, East Java, Indonesia. The study was conducted by field observation at some purposively selected sample locations. Field measurement was aimed to collect data about mangrove tree diameter at breast height (DBH), species, tree height, and fractional canopy cover. Mangrove biomass was indirectly calculated by allometric method based on mangrove species to estimate AGC in mangrove stands. The highest total AGC found in this study was 114.09 tons/ha at Rhizophora mucronata dominated forest, while the lowest total AGC was 12.86 tons/ha with Ceriops tagal as the dominant species. The AGC estimation in mangrove stands correlated positively with DBH and tree height. However, the biomass content and AGC are affected by the number of mangrove stands. The difference in the number of stands affect the amount of carbon content at each sample point.

On the basis of using practical methods, satellite image processing methods, the vegetation coverage classification system of the study area, interpretation key for the study area, classification and post-classification pro cessing, this research introduces how to exploit and process multi-temporal satellite images in evaluating the changes of forest area. Landsat 4, 5 TM and Landsat 8 OLI remote sensing image data were used to evaluate the changes in the area of mangrove forests (RNM) in Ca Mau province in the periods of 1988 - 1998, 1998 - 2013, 2013 - 2018, and 1988 - 2018. The results of the image interpretation in 1988, 1998, 2013, 2018 and the overlapping of the above maps show: In the 30-year period from 1988 to 2018, the total area of mangroves in Ca Mau province was decreased by 28% compared to the beginning, from 71,093.3 ha in 1988 reduced to 51,363.5 ha in 2018, decreasing by 19,729.8 ha. The recovery speed of mangroves is 2 times lower than their disappearance speed. Specifically, from 1988 to 2018, mangroves disappeared on an area of 42,534.9 hectares and appeared on the new area of 22,805 hectares, only 12,154.5 hectares of mangroves remained unchanged. The fluctuation of mangrove area in Ca Mau province is related to the process of deforestation to dig shrimp ponds, coastal erosion, the formation of mangroves on new coastal alluvial lands and soil dunes in estuaries, as well as planting new mangroves in inefficient shrimp ponds.

The area of mangrove forests in Indonesia is currently only spanning as much as 3.4 milion acres, so there is a need for the participation of the government and community to maintain its sustainability. South Halmahera is the district with the largest mangrove area in the North Maluku Province. One of the mangrove areas in the District of South Halmahera is located at Sayoang Village, East Bacan Subdistrict Up until its eleventh founding anniversary, this district have never conducted an inventorizing of its mangroves, both ecological and social studies in the field of public. This study aims to analyze the compotition of mangrove species in Sayoang Village, East Bacan Subdistrict, South Halmahera, and identify the knowledge of surrounding communities of mangrove areas as protected areas. Data were retrieved using sampling method with applications terraced paths, and analyzed by calculating its important value index (INP) and its index value diversity (IVD). The public social data were taken using in-depth interviews and questionnaires. Results obtained from this study show that the mangrove forest in Sayoang Village, East Bacan District, Halmahera, consists of major mangrove species with as many as eleven species belonging to families Rhizophoraceae, Sonneratiaceae, Avicenniaceae, Meliaceae and Myrtaceae, and as many as three species of minor mangrove belonging to families of Loranthaceae, Acanthaceae, and Pteridaceae. The mangrove's species diversity and richness is and low, but it has high evenness. The results showed that 60% of total respondents know the benefit of mangrove as fish habitat, while for mangrove area as conserving areas, 50% of total respondent don't know the status of the area. The cutting problems happened in mangrove areas, 90% of total respondent know the activity and 85% of total respondent think that the logging activities in mangrove area is still allowed. The management activity of mangrove area in Sayoang village hasn't been conducted, either by the community or by local Dinas Kehutanan, and 53% of total respondent still wishing the mangrove can give more benefit economically.Key words: Mangrove forest, mangrove protected areas, community knowledge

Mangrove forests are unique ecosystems that have ecological, biological and socio-economic functions. The function of mangrove forests on the environment is very important especially in the coastal and oceanic regions. Mangrove forests providers of wood, leaves as raw material for medicines, and natural dye. This study aims to inventory the diversity of species of mangrove vegetation in Mendalok Village, Sungai Kunyit Subdistrict, Mempawah Regency. The benefits of this study are to provide the data on mangrove forest vegetation as basic data for local government and related agencies in efforts to protect and preserve mangrove forests in Mendalok Village, Sungai Kunyit Subdistrict, Mempawah Regency. Inventory the tree in mangrove forest used a line with measured 200 meters. There are 6 lines and the distance between the lines as far as 100 meters. The lines of observation are placed by purposive sampling. The results of research found 11 types of species and consisted of 6 genera. The genera are Avicennia, Bruguiera, Ceriops, Rhizophora, Soneratia and Xylocarpus. The species found were Avicennia alba, Avicennia marina, Bruguiera cylindrica, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Bruguiera parviflora, Ceriops decandra, Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora stylosa, Sonneratia caseolaris, Xylocarpus mollucensis. Diversity of mangrove species in Mendalok Village, Sungai Kunyit Subdistrict, Mempawah Regency was high and should be maintained for conservation and ecotourism area. Abstract Mangrove forests are natural resources in coastal areas that have an important role in terms of social, economic and ecological aspects. However, the utilization of the mangrove ecosystem makes it vulnerable to damage. This study aims to determine the level of public knowledge of the economic, ecological benefits and damage that happened to mangrove areas in Tarakan City. The scoring method was used to determine the total score or the total score of the respondents’ answers, which amount to 50 people. that the community’s knowledge of the economic benefits of mangrove forests was categorized as know for the benefits of mangroves as firewood, mangrove areas as a place for settlement, mangroves as a place to get fish and mangrove benefits as aquaculture areas with total scores of 226, 200, 232,230 respectively. However, the level of community knowledge about the benefits of mangroves as a medicinal ingredient obtained a total score of 164, which means the level of community knowledge was in the doubtful category. While the level of community knowledge of the ecological benefits of mangrove forests as coastline guards, sea wave barriers, sea wind protectors, and animal breeding sites were included in the category of “Know” with a total score of 228, 224, 234, 240 respectively, but the level of knowledge The community regarding the benefits of mangroves that can manage household waste was in the “doubtful” category with a total score of 128. The community was aware of the damage to mangrove forest ecosystems caused by garbage, logging / mangroves, expanding aquaculture, settlements and increasing population. with a total score of 234,232, 210,228 and 200 levels of knowledge, respectively, which are included in the “Know” category.
