In the case of the integration process, economic and social differences between economic units represent a barrier. There are reasonable and active efforts of many administrative bodies to transfer the existing inequalities to equalities. In practical life, it is often necessary to order different objects and take a decision based on it. Decision-making can be intuitive or, conversely, based on various quantitative methods. The paper discusses some quantitative methods of multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM), namely Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS), and Weighted Linear Combination (WLC); and their use for innovation projects. Autonomous orders of objects (projects) are performed on the same basic data set by the above-mentioned methods, and they are compared with each other. The Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was used for mutual comparison. The test results showed that the investigated methods do not provide results with a close dependence, which means that the order of objects (projects) created depends on the method used.

Material selection is a very entangled and decisive stage in the design and development of products. There are large numbers of on hand and newly developed materials available in the market. In addition, inability to select the correct materials adversely affects the reputation and profitability of the company. Thus, designers need to study and trace the performance of available materials with appropriate functionalities. Thus, this research aims at establishing an efficient and systematic platform for the optimum selection of materials while accommodating the designated conflicting performance requirements. The developed model encompasses designing a hybrid decision support system in an attempt to circumvent the shortcomings of single multi-criteria decision making-based (MCDM) models. First, the objective relative importance weights of attributes are interpreted capitalizing on Shannon entropy algorithm. Then, an integrated model that encompasses the utilization of six different types of multi-criteria decision making algorithms is designed to create a reliable selection of material alternatives. The utilized MCDM algorithms comprise weighted product method (WPM), simple additive weighting (SAW), additive ratio assessment (ARAS), new combinative distance-based assessment (CODAS), complex proportional assessment (COPRAS) and technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS). Afterwards, COPELAND algorithm is exploited to generate a consensus and distinct ranking of material alternatives. Eventually, Spearman’s rank correlation analysis is used to evaluate the rankings obtained from the MCDM algorithms. Five numerical examples in diverse fields of material selection are tackled to examine the features and efficiency of the developed integrated model. Results illustrated that the developed model was able to solve the five material selection problems efficiently. On the other hand, no individual MCDM algorithm was able to solve all the assigned material selection problems. For instance, CODAS and TOPSIS only succeeded in solving one and two material selection problems, respectively. It was also inferred that notable differences and perturbations are encountered between the rankings of MCDM algorithms in the first, third, fourth and fifth numerical examples, which necessitates the implementation of COPELAND algorithm. It was also revealed that the highest correlation lied between COPRAS and WPM with an average Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient of 92.67%. On the other hand, the correlation between TOPSIS and CODAS attained the lowest rank with an average Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient of 18.95%. Results also demonstrated that COPRAS accomplished the highest Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient with 59.54%. Hence, it is the most efficient MCDM algorithm among the five algorithms which can serve as a reference for solving material selection problems. It can be also deduced that CODAS and TOPSIS are not advised to be implemented in solving similar material selection problems.

Sustainability in a supply chain is a demand on the one hand and a challenge on the other. It is necessary to balance between these dimensions in order to fulfill the purpose of the supply chain. Therefore, in the first phase—i.e., in procurement—it is necessary to take into account its sustainability. In this paper, a sustainable supplier was selected respecting all three aspects of sustainability. The evaluation was carried out on the basis of a total of 21 criteria arranged into two levels and three groups. A new Interval Rough SAW (simple additive weighting) method, which represents a contribution to the treatment of problems belonging to the multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM), was developed. The integration of interval rough numbers with the SAW method was completed. In addition, the full consistency method (FUCOM) was applied to determine the weights of the criteria. The integrated FUCOM-Interval Rough SAW model enables treatment of multi-criteria problems while reducing subjectivity to the lowest possible level and eliminating uncertainties and ambiguities. The results obtained were determined throughout a sensitivity analysis consisting of a change in the weight of the criteria and the influence of dynamic matrices on the change in ranks. In addition, Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient (SCC) was calculated to confirm the stability of the previously obtained results.

A Review of: White, B. (2017). Citations and circulation counts: Data sources for monograph deselection in research library collections. College & Research Libraries, 78(1), 53 – 65. https://doi.org/10.5860/crl.78.1.53 Abstract Objective – To facilitate evidence-based deselection of print monographs, this study examines to what extent there are correlations between circulation data (past and future usage) and between the borrowing and citation of print monographs. Design – Collections assessment project that used a variety of data sources and techniques, including Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, statistical analysis, and the analysis of circulation data, last-use dates, and citation data. Setting – An academic library in New Zealand. Subjects – Two ranges of books were chosen for the study: 591 (Specific Topics in Zoology) and 324 (The Political Process). From these ranges, monographs published prior to 2001 were selected as the study sample. Methods – This project relied on two data sources: circulation data from the Library’s ILS and citation data from Scopus. All data was downloaded to an Excel spreadsheet in preparation for analysis. The researcher examined call numbers, authors and editors, titles and subtitles, publication dates, circulation counts, dates of last check-in, total number of citations, number of citations from publications released in 2010 and on, and number of citations from institution-affiliated documents. Renewal data was omitted, as it did not provide evidence of additional instances of use. Where multiple copies of a specific title appeared in the data set, the researcher totalled all circulations and recorded the most recent check-in date. The researcher found that some titles in the study sample were generic and it was impossible to determine if citation data from Scopus linked to the monograph in the library collection. These titles were eliminated from the study. Once data collection was complete, the researcher calculated two additional data elements: the number of months since the last check-in date and the number of citations from items published before 2010. Data in the Excel spreadsheet was analyzed using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient to determine the relationship between past and future usage and between circulation and citation data. Main Results – Findings indicated that circulation and citation data are highly skewed. Many monographs in the study sample had never been borrowed and had few citations, while a small number of “celebrity titles” were borrowed or cited at a much higher rate than other monographs in the same classification. Further, results indicated that historic circulation numbers are imperfect predictors of future probability that a book will be borrowed. When taking a high-level view of the collection, highly circulated books tend to be borrowed more often than average. However, when examining monographs at the title level, high circulation is more of a probability instead of a robust indicator. An investigation of whether historic citation counts serve as an indicator of future citation followed previously established trends: monographs not heavily cited in the past are less likely to be cited in the future. Findings also found a weak correlation between local-institution monograph citation counts and total citation counts. Finally, the results demonstrated a weak correlation between circulation and citation data. As a group, well-cited books are borrowed more often than others, but at the individual title level, the effect is too random for either data set to predict the other in a reliable way. As such, circulation data and citation data can not be used as a proxy for each other. Conclusion – Neither circulation nor citation data can stand as full proxies of the value of a title. However, both provide information that reflects the status of a title within the scholarly community. In this environment, citation data should be considered equally with circulation figures. Both data points measure different phenomena and the weak correlation between them suggests that both are required to inform decisions about deselecting print monographs.

There is no doubt the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a powerful method for the efficiency evaluation of Decision Making Units (DMUs) with multiple inputs and outputs. Despite its usefulness, DEA has some notable limitations. A significant drawback with this approach is that inability to fully rank the DMUs. In the extant literature, different methods for this purpose have been suggested. While, in the traditional method the first step for the DEA approach is used, and results of this step are input for the DEA ranking method in the second step. To reduce the computational complexity of the traditional method, a new Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) approach is proposed in this article. In the proposed approaches, one step can achieve full ranking for all DMUs. The results show that although out of 20 DMUs are first in the final ranking ordered by the DEA, the author proposed methods can consider full ranking. Agreement of the proposed methods with the existing approaches are measured by the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient technique. The findings of this study reveal that TOPSIS, Neo-TOPSIS, and AHP ranking results are consistent with the DEA ranking method. Therefore, these proposed methods appear as the possible alternatives to the DEA and DEA ranking models.

Classification algorithm selection is an important issue in many disciplines. Since it normally involves more than one criterion, the task of algorithm selection can be modeled as multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) problems. Different MCDM methods evaluate classifiers from different aspects and thus they may produce divergent rankings of classifiers. The goal of this paper is to propose an approach to resolve disagreements among MCDM methods based on Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. Five MCDM methods are examined using 17 classification algorithms and 10 performance criteria over 11 public-domain binary classification datasets in the experimental study. The rankings of classifiers are quite different at first. After applying the proposed approach, the differences among MCDM rankings are largely reduced. The experimental results prove that the proposed approach can resolve conflicting MCDM rankings and reach an agreement among different MCDM methods.

Abstract Background Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is mainly affected by genetic and environmental factors; however, the correlation of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) with T2DM remains largely unknown. Methods Microarray analysis was performed to identify the differentially expressed lncRNAs and messenger RNAs (mRNAs) in patients with T2DM and healthy controls, and the expression of two candidate lncRNAs (lnc-HIST1H2AG-6 and lnc-AIM1-3) were further validated using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was used to measure the degree of association between the two candidate lncRNAs and differentially expressed mRNAs. Furthermore, the KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) pathway and GO (Gene Ontology) enrichment analysis were used to reveal the biological functions of the two candidate lncRNAs. Additionally, multivariate logistic regression analysis and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis were performed. Results The microarray analysis revealed that there were 55 lncRNAs and 36 mRNAs differentially expressed in patients with T2DM compared with healthy controls. Notably, lnc-HIST1H2AG-6 was significantly upregulated and lnc-AIM1-3 was significantly downregulated in patients with T2DM, which was validated in a large-scale qRT-PCR examination (90 controls and 100 patients with T2DM). Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient revealed that both lncRNAs were correlated with 36 differentially expressed mRNAs. Furthermore, functional enrichment (KEGG and GO) analysis demonstrated that the two lncRNA-related mRNAs might be involved in multiple biological functions, including cell programmed death, negative regulation of insulin receptor signal, and starch and sucrose metabolism. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that lnc-HIST1H2AG-6 and lnc-AIM1-3 were significantly correlated with T2DM (OR = 5.791 and 0.071, respectively, both P = 0.000). Furthermore, the ROC curve showed that the expression of lnc-HIST1H2AG-6 and lnc-AIM1-3 might be used to differentiate patients with T2DM from healthy controls (area under the ROC curve = 0.664 and 0.769, respectively). Conclusion The profiles of lncRNA and mRNA were significantly changed in patients with T2DM. The expression levels of lnc-HIST1H2AG-6 and lnc-AIM1-3 genes were significantly correlated with some features of T2DM, which may be used to distinguish patients with T2DM from healthy controls and may serve as potential novel biomarkers for diagnosis in the future.

We previously reported that superficial non-ampullary duodenal tumors (SNADETs) commonly had a whitish mucosal surface, named milk-white mucosa (MWM). The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of MWM with epithelial intracellular lipid droplets (immunohistochemically stained by adipose differentiation-related protein (ADRP)) and histological tumor grades. We reviewed endoscopic images and the histopathology of SNADETs resected en bloc endoscopically. We analyzed the correlation between the positive rates of endoscopic MWM in preoperative endoscopy and resected specimens, and ADRP-positive rates in the resected specimens. Associations between the MWM-positive rates and tumor grades, high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (HGIN)/intramucosal carcinoma (IC), and low-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (LGIN) were analyzed. All the 92 SNADETs analyzed were <20 mm and histologically classified into 39 HGIN/IC and 53 LGIN. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient showed a significant correlation between MWM-positive and ADRP-positive rates (p < 0.001). MWM-positive rates were significantly lower in the HGIN/IC than in the LGIN in preoperative endoscopy (p < 0.001) and resected specimens (p = 0.02). Our results suggest that endoscopic MWM is closely associated with epithelial intracellular lipid droplets and that the MWM-positive rate may be a predictor of histological grade in small SNADETs.

Summary Introduction: Hyperplasia of the pharyngeal tonsil is one of the main causes of mouth breathing, and accurate diagnosis of this alteration is important for proper therapeutic planning. Therefore, studies have been conducted in order to provide information regarding the procedures that can be used for the diagnosis of pharyngeal obstruction. Objective: To verify the correlation between nasopharyngoscopy and cephalometric examinations in the diagnosis of pharyngeal tonsil hyperplasia. Method: This was a cross-sectional, clinical, experimental, and quantitative study. Fifty-five children took part in this study, 30 girls and 25 boys, aged between 7 and 11 years. The children underwent nasofibropharyngoscopic and cephalometric evaluation to determine the grade of nasopharyngeal obstruction. The Spearman's rank correlation coefficient at the 5% significance level was used to verify the correlation between these exams. Results: In the nasopharyngoscopy evaluation, most children showed grade 2 and 3 hyperplasia of the pharyngeal tonsil, which was followed by grade 1. In the cephalometry assessment, most children showed grade 1 hyperplasia of the pharyngeal tonsil, which was followed by grade 2. A statistically significant regular positive correlation was observed between the exams. Conclusion: It was concluded that the evaluation of the pharyngeal tonsil hyperplasia could be carried out by fiber optic nasopharyngoscopy and cephalometry, as these examinations were regularly correlated. However, it was found that cephalometry tended to underestimate the size of the pharyngeal tonsil relative to nasopharyngoscopy.

Introduction. The use of age- and risk-adjusted caries prevention requires up-to-date knowledge on the cariostatic effects of fluoride, as well as the methods and safety of fluoride prophylaxis. Aim. The aim of the study was to assess dentists’ knowledge of the safety and mechanism of anticaries effects of fluoride. Material and methods. An anonymous questionnaire was conducted among 212 dentists participating in dental training. The questions included in the questionnaire related to knowledge about water fluoridation, fluoride cariostatic mechanisms and the safety of fluoride prophylaxis. The chi-square test and the Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient were used for statistical analysis. A significance level of 0.05 was used. Results. Incorrect knowledge about water fluoridation was demonstrated by 26.9% of respondents in the country and 16.0% of respondents in Europe. Most respondents (80.7%) reported higher efficacy of exogenous vs endogenous anticaries approaches, and more than half of respondents (59.0%) considered the processes of remineralisation and demineralisation as the most important anticaries activity. Almost all respondents (95.7%) agreed that the use of fluoride for caries prevention is controversial, mainly due to its dose-dependent therapeutic or toxic effects (85.4%). According to about 20% of respondents, cariostatic fluoride doses have adverse effects on the general health, mainly in the form of bone fragility (10.4%). Conclusions. Lack of correct knowledge about the dominant cariostatic effects of fluoride may result in the choice of an inappropriate preventive method or avoiding local application of fluoride preparations for fear of adverse systemic effects, which may in turn lead to increased caries prevalence in a given population.

To scientifically and accurately evaluate the status of the development of green airports in China, evaluation methods of green, ecological airports are established in this paper. To address the shortcomings in subjective and objective weighting methods, we propose a combination weighting method based on Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient and evaluation grades based on interval approximation. At the same time, by taking into account resource conservation, environmental friendliness, operation efficiency, and people-oriented service, we propose an evaluation index system and an interval number for each index. Lastly, the theory is applied to five large airports in different regions of China. Analysis of the evaluation results shows that Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) and Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN) have the highest scores for the resource conservation and environmental friendliness indexes, thus indicating that the development of a green ecological airport is closely related to its passenger transportation scale and economic strength. All considered airports showed the need for upgrading public  service facilities and constructing intelligent equipment. The method proposed in this paper is reasonable  and reliable; therefore, it can provide guidance for the evaluation and construction of green, ecological  airports.
