As the World Wide Web turns 25, it is an appropriate time to ask: where are we are now with disability and the Internet? A good place to look is in the burgeoning area of Internet and mobile technology. Accordingly, this paper explores the issues and prospect for disability and mobile Internet. It provides a brief history of the entwined nature of the rise of disability and the Internet, discusses the emergence of mobile Internets, and then turns to a discussion of mobile Web accessibility. It concludes by noting the limits of mobile Web accessibility, for its struggle to adopt an expanded concept of disability — but also because of growing complexity of mobile Internets.

Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a textual markup language which becomes more and more important in the Internet web service. However, some distinct disadvantages exist in XML, such as its nature of redundancy, which consumes the limited network’s bandwidth greatly especially in mobile computing. Considering the characteristics of the mobile commerce, the handsets’ memory capability and data processing time are two problems for XML being applied. This paper studies an enhancement of XML for the purpose of application in mobile e-commerce, called SXML, which means Simple XML to enhance the XML used in mobile web service. It helps XML producers minimizing the size effects of XML, e.g., the size overhead and slow implementation speed. Comprehensive simulations show that the SXML could reduce the size of XML documents and reduce the time of implementation, consequently utilize the bandwidth effectively.

Out-of Hospital Cardiac Arrest (OHCA) is a condition when heart stops beating in out of the hospital. The majority of OHCA leads to death because of the delay response. Emergency Medical Service (EMS) system is needed to take care of the patients carefully. The development of Internet-based EMS is one of the best solutions, which is not only to improve the response time, but also to help patients to get the ambulance immediately. The aim of this paper was to understand how the Internet -based EMS can be used and how it will affect the patients with OHCA. Our findings indicated that the Internet-based EMS with mobile web service is critically needed for immediate response of cardiac arrest and accident situation in pre-hospital condition. However, the Internet-based EMS development needs to involve inter-sectoral agencies, such as fire fighter, police, and National Search and Rescue (SAR) Agent.

Our lifestyle has changed and keeps changing with emerging software and hardware technologies. In the same way, mobile devices are changing the way people accessing the Internet. More users have changed from using desktop computers to mobile devices. A mobile device such as smartphones and tablets are widely used devices in accessing the Internet all over the world. From an early investigation, it is found that although mobile devices are highly flexible, accessible, and convenient, their usage to access websites is still average. The objective of this study is to conceptualize the factors that drive users to access websites through mobile devices. This study presents the scenario and the current situation of mobile web usage among mobile device users. It further critically discusses the role of three constructs namely, convenience, compatibility, and media richness in explaining the user’s intention to use the mobile web. The study adopts the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to understand what factors affect usage intention of the mobile web, an important topic for current and future research. The limitations lie in the depth of investigation where the empirical investigation should be conducted in future studies to prove the findings of this conceptual study. This study aims to explain the factors that will influence the intention to access mobile websites. Determining those factors will help web designers to develop mobile web pages that will be preferred by its users. Improving user’s experience of accessing the web through mobile devices will enable web service providers to offer web services more effectively that will satisfy the needs of the users.

This chapter examines how the rapid diffusion of social media and Mobile Web is impacting personal healthcare management amongst those living with chronic disease. Despite a recent increase in research in this area (Moorhead, et al., 2013), evaluating the “social” still poses challenges to conventional notions of the “Internet empowered” patient and the best ways to support the management of chronic disease (Østbye, et al., 2005). The chapter argues that there is a need for advancing conceptual thinking on how health and IT are now interacting at the level of individual patients/citizens and how this is continuing to transform health professional-patient interactions (Glasgow, et al., 2008). By drawing on examples of e-health research, the chapter illustrates how notions of the “social” and “technology” have evolved over time from medically centred e-health through to patient-centred e-health. The chapter considers how this evolution may lead to a future focus on community-centred personal healthcare of chronic disease supported by “social” e-health tools, applications, and services that continue to blur the more conventional boundaries between health professionals, patients, and their social networks.

The mobile channel, emerging from the convergence of wireless communications and the mobile Web, promises to deliver additional support to meet consumer needs. This chapter examines features of customer relationship management (CRM) as implemented on the Internet (eCRM) and the mobile channel (mCRM) from the customer’s perspective. It further explores how companies can better coordinate their CRM strategies between these two channels to support e-commerce customers. We propose an analytical framework to examine the current eCRM and mCRM practice in terms of customer loyalty, branding, customer satisfaction, customization, and trust. These five factors affect customer acquisition, sales and services, and customer retention. A checklist was developed to guide the evaluation of CRM practice for e-commerce sites. Several examples and research directions are discussed in the chapter.
