Satisfactory soil fertility is a suitable premise for supplying plants satisfactory development. The aim of this paper was the identification of the role of the most important soil indicators involved in durmast seedlings resistance against powdery mildew attack. A durmast nursery located in Transylvanian Plain was monitored in 2008. Basic statistic and correlations were calculated using STATISTICA v. 7.0. In 2008, a non linear dependence between analyzed parameters was reported. Weak negative correlations between the powdery mildew attack degree and humus (- 0.339), nitrogen (0.346) and phosphorus (- 0.313) were reported. They are representative only in a reduced sample share (11.40%, 11.0% and 9.70%, respectively) and not significant, all characterized by non linearity. By entire experimental period, the correlation between the powdery mildew attack degree and potassium content of soil, apart the other studied correlations, is linear, negative, and very weak, not representative (R2 = 0.004).

Soils and crops in orchard agrosystems are particularly vulnerable to climate change and environmental stresses. In many orchard soils, soil biodiversity and the ecosystem services it provides are under threat from a range of natural and manmade drivers. In this scenario, sustainable soil use aimed at increasing soil organic matter (SOM) and SOM-related benefits, in terms of soil quality and fertility, plays a crucial role. The role of soil macrofaunal organisms as colonizers, comminutors and engineers within soils, together with their interactions with microorganisms, can contribute to the long-term sustainability of orchard soils. Indeed, the continuous physical and chemical action of soil fauna significantly affects SOM levels. This review paper is focused on the most advanced and updated research on this argument. The analysis of the literature highlighted that a significant part of soil quality and fertility in sustainably-managed fruit orchard agrosystems is due to the action of soil macrofauna, together with its interaction with decomposing microorganisms. From the general analysis of the data obtained, it emerged that the role of soil macrofauna in orchards agrosystems should be seriously taken into account in land management strategies, focusing not exclusively on fruit yield and quality, but also on soil fertility restoration.

The sequence of changes that occur in induced protein malnutrition has been studied in nine monkeys, three of which received an aureomycin supplement of 25 mg/kg per day from the first day of the experimental period. Serial estimations of serum protein and albumin levels, response to water load, thiocyanate space and the presence of active ferritin in circulation were determined in all nine monkeys. All the monkeys developed edema between the 13th and 16th week of the experiment, except two of the three aureomycin-supplemented animals. While no correlation was observed between serum albumin levels or impairment of response to water load on the one hand and edema on the other, there was a striking relationship between the appearance of active ferritin in circulation and the subsequent formation of edema. The increase in thiocyanate space was invariably preceded by the presence of ferritin in the blood. During nutritional rehabilitation, ferritin disappeared from circulation before the thiocyanate space returned to normal levels. It is significant that aureomycin, which prevented the appearance of ferritin in the blood, also prevented the development of edema. The results of the investigation strongly suggest a causal relationship between ferritin and nutritional edema. Submitted on August 13, 1958

<p>Soil quality is one of the main environmental conditions for successful and sustainable orchards cultivation. The main role of the soil is reflected in its production activities or productivity. Soil fertility implies content available nutrients, such as individual elements, pH and humus. The research of soil quality leads to certain conclusions about which soil is suitable for growing crops. The investigation of soil quality for Pcinja District in southern Serbia is performed, with the goal to complete environmental conditions for cultivation of the most suitable crops. The methods that were used for the analysis of the soil in the laboratory are: chemical and Al-methods and calibration and potentiometric, spectrophotometric, photometric. For potentiometric method pH meter, spectrophotometer classic which is determined by phosphorus and Flame Photometar device that determines potassium are used. The results in this paper show high quality land for sustainable growing fruit crops.</p>

We investigated the effects of somatostatin (SMS)-201-995, atropine, and MK-329 on the role of cholinergic- and cholecystokinin-related systems and on the secretory relationship between five pancreatic digestive enzymes in rats. Animals kept in restraint cages and provided with pancreatic, biliary, duodenal, and jugular vein cannulas were treated as follows: 1) 0.25 micrograms.kg-1.h-1 caerulein alone, 2) both 0.25 micrograms.kg-1.h-1 caerulein and 100 micrograms.kg-1.h-1 atropine, 3) both caerulein and 5 micrograms.kg-1.h-1 SMS, 4) 91.3 micrograms.kg-1.h-1 carbachol alone, 5) both carbachol and 0.5 mg.kg-1.h-1 MK-329, and 6) both carbachol and 5 micrograms.kg-1.h-1 SMS, respectively. Food, but not water, was denied rats starting 10 h before the experiment and throughout the 6-h experimental period. The secretory patterns over the 6-h experimental period showed noticeably independent regulation of pancreatic secretion of individual digestive enzymes. The relationship between paired enzymes significantly varied according to the treatment. The correlation between chymotrypsinogen and the other enzymes was markedly modulated by MK-329. Our results suggest that SMS is a major "gate-keeper" in the regulation of exocrine pancreatic secretion and that the secretion of each digestive enzyme is individually regulated. Furthermore, they suggest that cholecystokinin and acetylcholine and their respective agonists are essentially initiators of secretory processes of the pancreas. Therefore, the paradigms of the regulation of pancreatic secretion heretofore accepted should be reexamined.

The present study aimed to assess four forest stands, Fagus orientalis Lipsky-Carpinus betulus L.-Acer velutinum Boiss. (FO-CB-AV), Fagus orientalis Lipsky-Carpinus betulus L. (FO-CB), Fagus orientalis Lipsky-Acer velutinum Boiss. (FO-AV), and Pure Fagus orientalis Lipsky (FO) on basis of some soil quality indices in Mazandaran Province, northern Iran. Five samples per stand were taken (0–30 cm), the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of soil were determined. Nine criteria were selected according to Principal Component Analysis as Minimum Data Set. According to the results, the highest value of litter Ca, density and biomass of earthworm, and C microbial biomass were found in FO-CB-AV. After applying the analytical hierarchy process, the calculated overall priority based on nine criteria showed that the FO-CB-AV stand had a higher ecological potential compared to the other stands. Therefore, the FO-CB-AV stand had more of appropriate conditions for improving soil quality in degraded forest regions compared to the other stands under current conditions.

Atmospheric concentrations of Sphaerotheca macularis conidia were monitored for 2 years on a strawberry crop in Huelva (southwestern Spain). The presence of airborne conidia was determined to assess the role of weather conditions on conidial release. The relationship between airborne conidia and incidence of powdery mildew on fruit was also studied. Concentrations of conidia were estimated with a Burkard volumetric spore sampler. The presence of conidia was related to temperature, relative humidity, and rainfall, with a positive correlation for the first factor and a negative correlation with the other two. The presence of conidia in the air was positively correlated with disease incidence. A diurnal pattern of conidia release was observed.

SummaryWe measured total and free protein S (PS), protein C (PC) and factor X (FX) in 393 healthy blood donors to assess differences in relation to sex, hormonal state and age. All measured proteins were lower in women as compared to men, as were levels in premenopausal women as compared to postmenopausal women. Multiple regression analysis showed that both age and subgroup (men, pre- and postmenopausal women) were of significance for the levels of total and free PS and PC, the subgroup effect being caused by the differences between the premenopausal women and the other groups. This indicates a role of sex-hormones, most likely estrogens, in the regulation of levels of pro- and anticoagulant factors under physiologic conditions. These differences should be taken into account in daily clinical practice and may necessitate different normal ranges for men, pre- and postmenopausal women.

In the XIV century. centripetal tendencies began to appear in the Moscow principality. Inside the Russian church, several areas were distinguished. Part of the clergy supported the specificobar form. The other understood the need for transformations in society. As a result, this led to a split in the Russian church in the 15th century for "non-possessors" and "Josephites". The former linked the fate of the future with the ideology of hesychasm and its moral transformation, while the latter sought support in alliance with a strong secular power.

This paper is a contribution to the growing literature on the role of projective identification in understanding couples' dynamics. Projective identification as a defence is well suited to couples, as intimate partners provide an ideal location to deposit unwanted parts of the self. This paper illustrates how projective identification functions differently depending on the psychological health of the couple. It elucidates how healthier couples use projective identification more as a form of communication, whereas disturbed couples are inclined to employ it to invade and control the other, as captured by Meltzer's concept of "intrusive identification". These different uses of projective identification affect couples' capacities to provide what Bion called "containment". In disturbed couples, partners serve as what Meltzer termed "claustrums" whereby projections are not contained, but imprisoned or entombed in the other. Applying the concept of claustrum helps illuminate common feelings these couples express, such as feeling suffocated, stifled, trapped, held hostage, or feeling as if the relationship is killing them. Finally, this paper presents treatment challenges in working with more disturbed couples.

After establishing a context of More's lifelong engagement with the “calculus” of pleasure, this essay shows how the section devoted to the Utopians' pleasure philosophy is structured around five formulations of a “rule” to calculate “true and honest [honesta]” pleasure in ways that playfully imitate and echo the “rule” Cicero formulates several times in De officiis to discern one's duty when there seems to be a conflict between honestas et utilitas. When followed, the Utopian pleasure calculus shows the necessary role of societas, officii, iustitia, caritas, and the other aspects of human nature, most importantly friendship, that Cicero stresses in his rule and that he argued Epicurus ignored. Much of the irony and humor of this section depends on seeing the predominance of Ciceronian vocabulary in Raphael's unusual defense [patrocinium] of pleasure, rather than a Ciceronian defense of duty rooted in honestas. Throughout, however, this essay also shows how More goes beyond Cicero by including Augustinian and biblical allusions to suggest ways that our final end is not as Epicurus or the Stoics or Cicero claim; the language and allusions of this section point to a level of good cheer and care for neighbors and for God in ways quite different from any classical thinker.
