In order to investigate the effect of hydro-priming on seed germination with distilled water on germination of five Alfalfa cultivars under salinity stress, an experiment was conducted as a factorial experiment based on a completely randomized design with three replications. Seven levels of hydro-priming and salinity of NaCl including prime and non-salinity, prime and 50 mM salinity, prime and 100 mM salinity, prime and 150 mM salinity, prime and 200 mM salinity, prime and 250 mM salinity and without prime and salinity and five alfalfa varieties, including ‘Hamedani’, ‘Isfahani’, ‘Bami’, ‘Yazdi’ and ‘Ghareh Yonjeh’ were used. The results showed that the main effect of prime, salinity and cultivars and their interaction in all studied traits were significantly affected at the 5% probability level. Priming treatments in non-salinity of all cultivars were the highest. In all cultivars, final germination percentage, length and weight of radicle, plumule and seedling, germination rate and time, relative radicle elongation, vigor index and stress index, were significantly improved in response to priming in salinity levels of 50-200 mM, compared to control. Radicle produced higher length and weight than the plumule in hydro- priming and salinity treatments. ‘Hamedani’ cultivar in most of studied characteristics had a better response than others. The lowest response to salinity stress and priming was observed in ‘Yazdi’ cultivar.

ABSTRACT In order to investigate salinity stress on seed reserve utilization and seedling growth of treated seeds of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), an experiment was carried out. Factorial experiment was carried out in completely randomized design with three replicates. To create salinity stress, NaCl in osmotic levels at 0 (as control), -4, -8, -12 and -16 bar were used. For seed priming, gibberellin (GA) 50 ppm was used. Our results showed that treatment × drought interaction on these traits: germination percentage, weight of utilized (mobilized) seed, seed reserve utilization efficiency, seedling dry weight and seed reserve depletion percentage were significant. The highest germination percentage, weight of utilized (mobilized) seed, seed reserve utilization efficiency, seedling dry weight and seed reserve depletion percentage were attained from priming by gibberellin at control conditions. Thus, priming increased characteristics as compared to the unprimed. Priming improved seed reserve utilization such as: weight of utilized (mobilized) seed reserve, seed reserve depletion percentage, seed reserve utilization efficiency and seedling growth in barley under salinity stress.

This study aims to examine the influence of the media and the storage period on the viability of clove seeds. The study was conducted at the Ambon Plant Crops Protection and Protection Center laboratory. The study used a factorial completely randomized design with two types of factors and three replications. The storage media consists of 3 levels, namely: Without the storage media, the media for storing rice husk and the media for storing sawdust. The second factor is the storage period consists of 4 levels, namely: 10 days storage, 20 days storage, 30 days storage and 40 days storage. The parameters measured were germination power, germination rate, and vigor index. Storage media and storage period significantly affected germination and vigor indexes but did not significantly affect germination rates. The results showed that the sawdust storage media was a good medium for storing clove seeds (Syzygium aromaticum L.). This can be seen in the results of the average germination of clove seeds stored in powder storage media with a storage time of 10 days giving better results of 85% compared to rice husks at a storage time of 10 days with a germination percentage of 65%.  Keywords: clove seeds, save media, save period   ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji pengaruh media dan periode simpan terhadap viabilitas benih cengkeh. Penelitian dilaksanakan di laboratorium Balai Besar Perbenihan dan Proteksi Tanaman Perkebunan Ambon. Penelitian menggunakan rancangan acak lengkap pola faktorial dengan dua macam faktor dan tiga kali ulangan. Media simpan terdiri dari 3 taraf yaitu: Tanpa media simpan, media simpan sekam padi dan media simpan serbuk gergaji. Faktor kedua adalah periode simpan terdiri dari 4 taraf yaitu: penyimpanan 10 hari, penyimpanan 20 hari, penyimpanan 30 hari dan penyimpanan 40 hari. Parameter yang diukur adalah daya berkecambah, laju perkecambahan dan indeks vigor. Media simpan dan periode penyimpanan berpengaruh nyata pada persentase perkecambahan dan indeks vigor tetapi tidak berpengaruh nyata pada laju perkecambahan. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa media simpan serbuk gergaji merupakan media yang baik bagi penyimpanan benih cengkeh (Syzygium aromaticum L.). Hal ini terlihat pada hasil rata-rata daya berkecambah benih cengkeh yang disimpan pada media simpan serbuk dengan lama penyimpanan selama 10 hari memberikan hasil yang lebih baik yakni 85% jika dibandingkan dengan sekam padi pada lama penyimpanan 10 hari dengan persentase perkecambahan 65%. Effects of four different levels of NaCl (05, 10, 15, 20 dS/m) on the seed germination of cluster bean (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba L.) cultivars were investigated. Only distilled water was used in the control. The experiment was conducted in the Petri dishes under laboratory condition and laid out in CRD comprising five replicates. The results indicated that the germination index (GI), seed vigor index (SVI), germination stress index and seedling length (radicle and plumule) decreased with increase of salinity levels and germination percentage (GP) was reduced significantly at the highest level of salinity (200 mM). However, mean germination time (MGT) and time taken for 50% germination (T50) increased by increasing salinity levels. Correlation coefficient between all possible combinations was estimated and the results indicated that GP, GI, MGT, T50, and SVI had significant positive or negative correlation with each other.

The Alleviation Effect of Silicon on Seed Germination and Seedling Growth of Tomato Under Salinity StressThis study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of silicon (Si) application under salinity levels on seed germination and growth characteristics of tomato seeds. A laboratory experiment was performed on completely randomized design with two levels of salinity (25 and 50 mM NaCl) and 2 concentration of Si (1 and 2 mM) with 4 replications. Germination percentage, germination rate, seedling shoot and root length, fresh and dry weight of seedling and mean germination time was measured. Seed germination ofLycopersicon esculentumL. was significantly affected by salinity levels, Si and their interaction. Germination characteristics of tomato seeds decreased drastically by increasing NaCl concentrations. However, 1 mM Si had positive effects on seed germination characteristics and improved germination percentage, germination rate and mean germination time. Si alleviated the harmful effect of salinity stress on tomato seed germination at almost all germination characteristics.

For investigation of the effect of seed priming by kinetin on germination indices and proline activity of Silybum marianum  L. under drought stress, factorial experiment based on completely randomized design with two factor includingdifferent concentrations of kinetin (0, 10 and 20 ppm) and different levels of drought stress including 0, -6 and -12 barat three replicates was carried out. According to the results, drought stress and kinetin individualy cause to decreases of germination percentage, germination rate, seedling length, seed vigor and seedling dry weight but uses of kinetin in drought stress condition improvment of them. Also, drought stress cause to increases of proline content and catalase activity. The objective of this work was to determine if KCl could be a useful nutrient primer for safe seed germination in maize crop under salt stress conditions. Seed priming was done using 50 mmol L‑1 of muriate of potash, and germination and seedling growth were evaluated after salt stress with NaCl up to 50 mmol L‑1. Another set of seeds was tested under the same salt stress conditions without priming. Under salinity stress, germination percentage, germination rate index, germination coefficient, and seedling vigor indexes were higher in primed seeds. In unprimed seeds, mean germination time increased, while the germination rate index and the fresh and dry matter mass decreased more sharply with salinity stress. The Na/K ratio was higher in unprimed seeds.

Salinity adversely affects 20-30% of the irrigated area in the world. Tomato is sensitive to salinity. It is one of the most severe abiotic factors of many agricultural crops and it becoming the main problem in Ethiopia. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different salinity levels on the seed germination parameters of tomato varieties. It was laid out in a completely randomized design with three replicates. The treatment included four tomato varieties (Sirinka, Weyno, ARP D2, and Roma VF) and five salinity levels (1 dS m-1, 2 dS m-1, 3 dS m-1, 4 dS m-1, and control). Fifty seeds were placed in a Petri dish over a moistened germination paper for germination and seedlings and allowed to grow for 14 days. The germination rate, speed and energy of tomato seeds were significantly (p < 0.001) affected by the combined effect of variety and salinity. The shortest mean germination time, the highest mean germination rate, and the highest speed of germination were recorded in the ARP D2 variety in the control treatment. The lowest first and last days of germination, and the uncertainty of germination were recorded from ARP D2. However, an increase in the days of germination and in the uncertainty of germination, and a decrease in the germination index and total germination percentage trends were observed with increasing salinity levels. The highest level of salinity (4 dS m-1) affected the germination of tomato varieties. Among the four tested tomato varieties, ARP D2 and Roma VF were tolerant to salinity.

This study was carried out at Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero, Kebbi State, to determine the effect of seed priming methods on the germination of Detarium microcarpum. The study was carried out in the Forestry Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture. The effectiveness of nine (9) different seed priming methods was assessed, control inclusive. Treatment 1 (TRT1) seeds were soaked in tap water for 48 hours, Treatment 2 (TRT2) seeds were mechanically scarified opposite to microphyle, treatment 3, 4, and 5 (TRT3, TRT4, TRT5) seeds were immersed in H2SO4 for 5, 10 and 15 minutes respectively, treatment 6, 7 and 8 (TRT6, TRT7 and TRT8) seeds were soaked in hot water (100oC) for 5, 10 and 15 minutes respectively and untreated seeds (CNTRL). Completely Randomized Design with three (3) replications was used. The data obtained were analyzed using one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA).The result revealed that seeds of D. microcarpum subjected to TRT2, TRT4, TRT5 and TRT8 recorded with highest Final Germination Percentage (FGP 100%) and was found to differ significantly (P<0.05) with other treatment and CNTRL recorded the lowest FGP (60%).Thus, TRT2 was significantly (P<0.05) enhanced the seed and germination rate of D. microcarpum with the highest FGP (100%), lowest MGT (6.67), highest GRI (15.05), highest GE (12.01), lower FDG (5.67) with maximum GI value (900). Based on the result, pre-treatment of T. indica seeds with H2SO4 is recommended for effective germination.

Salinity is an abiotic stress which has harmful effects on germination of many plants. Therefore, high germination rate and vigorous early growth under salty soils is preferred. Seed priming is a way to increase salt tolerance of plants. An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of seed priming on germination of milk thistle under salinity condition. The treatments were 4 levels of seed priming (no priming, distilled water as hydro priming and 0.5 and 1.0 mM salicylic acid) and 5 levels of salinity (0, 40 and 80 mM NaCl and 40 and 80 mM CaCl2). The experiment arranged as a factorial in a completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications. Results showed that salinity decreased germination percentage and germination rate to about 16 and 32% in 80 mM CaCl2 level compared to control, respectively. The highest mean germination time (5.7 day) were belonged to 80 mM CaCl2. Radicle and plumule length significantly decreased by 80 mM NaCl and 40 and 80 mM CaCl2. The lowest seedling weight and seed stamina observed in 80 mM CaCl2. 0.5 mM salicylic acid improved all traits except mean germination time as compared to control.  Salicylic acid (0.5 mM) improved radicle length under 0, 40 and 80 mM NaCl salinity levels as well as increased plumule length at the 0 and 40 mM NaCl salinity conditions.

Abstract Salinity is an important abiotic stress which can affect crop production in the world. One of the simplest methods for improving salinity tolerance of plants is seeds priming. This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of seeds priming with three solutions (KCl , NaCl and CaCl2) in germination and later growth of three pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) cultivars: Beldi, Baklouti and Anaheim Chili. Seeds germination was conducted in a completely randomized design under seven salinity levels (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 g L-1) at room temperature for primed and control seeds. Plants derived from these germinated seeds (control and primed) were transplanted and cultivated in a greenhouse for 4 months and were irrigated permanently with seven salinity levels (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 g L-1). The results showed that salinity affected all parameters under study like total germination percentage and chlorophyll level (a and b). As well, proline content increased as response to increasing salinity. The plants derived and grown from primed seeds showed a considerable tolerance to salt stress and gave better results. In fact, priming improved the salt resistance of pepper owing to more chlorophyll and proline accumulation. These results suggest that seed priming induced possible physiological adjustments in pepper seeds, especially in the early stages of development, and could be used as a suitable tool for improving germination and growth characteristics under salt stress conditions.
