ABSTRACT Field experiments were conducted during spring 2014 and fall and spring 2015 to determine the effect of fresh mulch on the development of Phytophthora infestans epidemics, in Lapa Municipality, Parana State, southern Brazil. The used cultivars were ‘Agata’, susceptible, and ‘BRS Ana’, moderately susceptible. The main treatment consisted in manually applying a 10cm-thick layer of fresh mulch when potato sprouts were emerging. Fresh mulch was prepared with plants available at that time of the year. For the spring experiments, fresh mulch was a mixture of oats, rye grass and wild radish (60 t/ha) and for the fall experiment, semi-ripe elephant grass (90 t/ha). Plots consisted of six 10m-long rows, spaced at 0.8m, containing 28 plants per row. Experimental design was in completely randomized blocks with four replicates. Natural inoculum was adopted. Percentage of leaf area was weekly estimated until the end of the plant cycle and the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) was calculated. Application of fresh mulch significantly reduced AUDPC by 32.1%, 12.4% and 23.1%, compared to control in all seasons, for ‘BRS Ana’ and by 26.1%, 2.8% and 12.0% for ‘Agata’. Application of fresh mulch showed to be a promising practice for the integrated management of late blight and for the protection of yields, especially in periods more favorable to the development of the disease. More detailed studies should be conducted on the plant type and amount of fresh mulch to be used, as well as on the possibility of reducing concentrations or increasing intervals between fungicide sprays.

The resistance to potato late blight (as AUDPC – the area under the disease progress curve) and yield were evaluated in precise field experiments with 13 colour-fleshed potato cultivars. Red Emmalie and Blaue Anneliese were the most profitable cultivars of potatoes with coloured flesh, the overall yield did not differ statistically from the control cv. Agria. Cv. Blaue Anneliese resistance to potato late blight was considerably better than both control cultivars, other 2 cultivars HB Red and Red Emmalie were similar to cv. Agria. Surprisingly, cv. Russet Burbank was found to be more resistant than most cultivars tested. A statistically significant weak dependence (r = 0.36) between the percentage of infestation of plants in the T6 evaluation date (6–8 August in individual years) and the yield was detected, the slightly stronger (r = 0.40) was the correlation between AUDPC values and total yields.

Accumulated rainfall thresholds were studied in seven field experiments conducted in Ecuador and Peru for their value in timing applications of fungicide to control potato late blight, caused by Phytophthora infestans. Fungicide regimes based on accumulated rainfall thresholds ranging from 10 to 70 mm were compared with calendar spray schemes of every 5 or 7 days. Very low thresholds of 10 to 20 mm gave similar levels of control and resulted in similar number of sprays as did calendar spraying. However, neither low thresholds nor calendar sprays were effective in protecting susceptible potato genotypes in over half of the experiments. Thresholds of 25 to 50 mm of rainfall led to reduction in the number of sprays needed to protect resistant cultivars but also resulted in high levels of disease on susceptible cultivars. We conclude that timing fungicide sprays based on accumulated rainfall thresholds could be a successful component of integrated management strategies that include cultivars with moderate or high levels of resistance. The simplicity of measuring accumulated rainfall means that the technology can potentially be used by resource-poor farmers in developing countries.

Field experiments were carried out at Regional Agriculture Research Station, Tarahara in threeconsecutive years (1997-2000) during winter season to know the economic sprays of differentfungicides to manage late blight disease of potato. Late blight susceptible cultivar of potatoKufri Sindhuri was used for the experiment. Krinoxyl gold (metalaxyl 8% and mancozeb 64%)at the rate of 1.5 g/l, Dithane M- 45 (mancozeb 75%) @ 0.3% and Bordeaux mixture @ 10 gcopper sulfate and 10 g lime/l of water and their different combinations were tested inrandomized complete block design with three replications. Terminal disease severity was thehighest (7.9) on 0-9 scale disease rating in unsprayed check and it was significantly higher thanthose of other fungicides sprays. Plots with three sprays of Dithane M- 45 @ 0.3% recorded thelowest (2.4) terminal disease severity. Disease development was the fastest in the unsprayed plotcompared to all other treatments. Similarly apparent infection rate was the highest in unsprayedtreatment. Area Under the Disease Progress Curve was also the highest in unsprayed plot and itwas significantly higher than those of other treatments. Tuber yield was the lowest (3.93 kg/4.5m2 plot in unsprayed and the highest (6.08 kg), in the plot receiving four sprays of Dithane M-45@ 0.3 % and this was at par with the tuber yield of plots receiving two and three sprays ofDithane M-45. Benefit cost ratio was the highest (1.54) in case of two sprays of Dithane M-45@ 0.3% at 10 days intervals. In this study, genotype by environment (G × E) interactions and phenotypic stability of resistance to Phytophthora infestans, the cause of late blight, were analysed in Peru for 13 potato genotypes, using additive main effects and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) analysis and Huehn's non-parametric test. The potato genotypes were tested in seven experiments over two years in the vicinity of Comas, Peru, an area used by the International Potato Center to screen for resistance to late blight. Results of the two analyses generally correlated and indicated that quantitative resistance to P. infestans was stable under field conditions for all the genotypes tested. The first two principal components (PCA1 and PCA2) of the AMMI analysis explained 54% of the G × E interaction sum of squares. A biplot of the two principal components demonstrated a strong year effect in the G × E interaction. By plotting yearly means of the relative area under the disease progress curve (rAUDPC), genotypes could be assigned to one of three resistance categories, resistant, moderately resistant or susceptible, but the need for a more readily applicable and truly quantitative scale for resistance was noted. Based on these studies, standards can be selected for use in screening in the area where they were tested. After further testing in other locations, a standard set drawn from these genotypes could be identified and a quantitative scale developed for evaluation of resistance under short day conditions.

The objective of this study was to evaluate fungicide applications, host resistance, and trellising, alone and in combination, as management practices for downy mildew on slicing cucumber. A split-split plot experimental design was used with three and four replications in spring and fall 2017, respectively. The whole-plot treatment was fungicide, four applications of chlorothalonil (Bravo Weather Stik 6SC) alternated with three applications of cyazofamid (Ranman 400SC), or water. Split plots were nontrellised or trellised with four strings supported by stakes. Split-split plots were cultivar Bristol, which is intermediately resistant to downy mildew, or cultivar Speedway, which is susceptible to downy mildew with similar parentage as Bristol. In both seasons, area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) values were lower with fungicides than water for both cultivars. In the spring, AUDPC for Bristol was lower than for Speedway regardless of fungicide treatment. In the fall, Bristol had a lower AUDPC than Speedway with fungicides, but the AUDPC did not differ between the two cultivars with water. The mean AUDPC for trellised plants (376.2) was lower than for nontrellised plants (434.0; P = 0.007). Fungicide applications increased marketable and total fruit weights in both seasons (P ≤ 0.0002). Marketable weight with fungicides was almost double (93% greater) the marketable weight with water. Marketable weight was 55% greater for Bristol than for Speedway in spring, but yields did not differ between cultivars in fall (season-by-cultivar interaction, P ≤ 0.0003). Because trellising had no effect on marketable yields (P = 0.11), trellising is not recommended for managing downy mildew on slicing cucumber. Of the three management techniques examined, fungicides had the largest effects on disease and yields, followed by cultivar resistance.

Field experiments were conducted in 2002 to 2006 to characterize yield potential and disease resistance in the Bolivian landrace peanut (Arachis hypogaea) cv. Bayo Grande, and breeding lines developed from crosses of Bayo Grande and U.S. cv. Florida MDR-98. Diseases of interest included early leaf spot, caused by the fungus Cercospora arachidicola, and late leaf spot, caused by the fungus Cercosporidium personatum. Bayo Grande, MDR-98, and three breeding lines, along with U.S. cvs. C-99R and Georgia Green, were included in split-plot field experiments in six locations across the United States and Bolivia. Whole-plot treatments consisted of two tebuconazole applications and a nontreated control. Genotypes were the subplot treatments. Area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) for percent defoliation due to leaf spot was lower for Bayo Grande and all breeding lines than for Georgia Green at all U.S. locations across years. AUDPC for disease incidence from one U.S. location indicated similar results. Severity of leaf spot epidemics and relative effects of the genotypes were less consistent in the Bolivian experiments. In Bolivia, there were no indications of greater levels of disease resistance in any of the breeding lines than in Bayo Grande. In the United States, yields of Bayo Grande and the breeding lines were greater than those of the other genotypes in 1 of 2 years. In Bolivia, low disease intensity resulted in the highest yields in Georgia Green, while high disease intensity resulted in comparable yields among the breeding lines, MDR-98, and C-99R. Leaf spot suppression by tebuconazole was greater in Bolivia than in the United States. This result indicates a possible higher level of fungicide resistance in the U.S. population of leaf spot pathogens. Overall, data from this study suggest that Bayo Grande and the breeding lines may be desirable germplasm for U.S. and Bolivian breeding programs or production.

The expression of partial resistance to Puccinia substriata var. indica and its contribution to digestible biomass production in forage pearl millet hybrids were evaluated in field experiments at Tifton, GA. Inbreds Tift 383, Tift 65, and nine inbreds with partial resistance selected from the cross Tift 383 × ‘ICMP 501’ were crossed to Tift 23DA4. The parental inbreds and hybrids were evaluated in natural epidemics in 1996 and 1997. Because of maturity differences among the lines, slope of the regression of logit rust severity on time (apparent infection rate) and area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) calculated for a defined interval of plant growth (10 days before to 20 days after anthesis) and adjusted for initial rust severity at 10 days prior to anthesis were the most useful indicators of resistance. Inbred resistance was not a reliable predictor of hybrid resistance when evaluated by either variable. Hybrids were evaluated for biomass production in 1996 and 1997 in a split-plot design, with hybrids as main plots and nontreated or chlorothalonil fungicide-treated as subplots. Differences existed among hybrids for AUDPC and for digestible dry matter yield (DDMY) and its components. Over all hybrids, the response between DDMY and final rust severity was described by logarithmic regression. Two clusters of hybrids were identified by cluster analysis of disease-related data from both experiments. The cluster of susceptible hybrids tended to have a lower DDMY and were less stable over year × treatment environments than the cluster of partially resistant hybrids. Lodging in nontreated plots in 1997 primarily occurred in susceptible hybrids. Although resistance was expressed in certain hybrids, greater levels of partial resistance are needed to provide adequate protection against DDMY losses.

ABSTRACT: Late blight (Phytophthora infestans ) is among the most important and destructive diseases in potato cultivation. Aiming to evaluate the efficacy of the new fungicide ametoctradin, mixed with dimethomorph and metiram, an experiment was carried out in commercial potato crops (Ágata cultivar) in Pilar do Sul, São Paulo state, Brazil, during the growing season in 2013. A randomized block design was used, with 4 replications, on plots of 15 m2. Applications were carried out using a backpack sprayer with a spray-bar under 3 bar of constant pressure. The application volume varied from 300 L to 600 L.ha-1 based on crop development. The variables evaluated were leaf severity (0 to 100%), area under the disease progress curve, and yield. Ametoctradin + dimethomorph (1.25 L.ha-1) provided significant control of late blight, exceeding benthiavalicarb + fluazinam, dimethomorph + metiram, dimethomorph + pyraclostrobin, cymoxanil + mancozeb, metalaxyl-M + mancozeb, ametoctradin + metiram, and pyraclostrobin + metiram, although similar to ametoctradin + dimethomorph (1.00 L.ha-1), fluopicolide + propamocarb, and fenamidone + propamocarb. Ametoctradin + metiram resulted in moderate control, which was always similar to the standard. Ametoctradin and its associations represent a new alternative for the management of potato late blight.

Soybean mildew caused by Oomycota Peronospora manshurica, is a disease widely spread in Brazil. In order to study the efficiency of soybean mildew control due to the application of alternative products and fungicide in the field, experiments were conducted in Ponta Grossa, PR, Brazil, during the 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 growing seasons. The design used was randomized blocks with four replications. The treatments were: 1-witness; 2-acibenzolar-S-methyl; 3-calcium; 4-micronutrients: copper, manganese and zinc; 5-micronutrients: manganese, zinc and molybdenum; 6-NK fertilizer; 7-Ascophyllum nodosum and 8-azoxystrobin + cyproconazole with the addition of Nimbus adjuvant. Four applications of alternative products (phenological stages V3, V6, R1 and R5.1) and two of fungicide (phenological stages R1 and R5.1) were performed. The mildew severity was estimated using a diagrammatic scale. The severity data made it possible to calculate the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC). In the 2014/2015 harvest the disease was more severe. The control of downy mildew by the use of fungicide did not reduce the epidemic. The fungicide was not efficient in the two evaluated seasons. All tested alternative products reduced the disease severity and AUDPC in both seasons. The best results in reducing downy mildew were found with the application of acibenzolar-S-methyl, micronutrients (Cu, Mn, Zn) and A. nodosum.

A total of 32 commercial cultivars grown in the United States and 15 potato breeding lines and non-U.S. cultivars were evaluated at Rosemount, MN for their reaction to the US-8 strain of Phytophthora infestans. Commercial red-, russet-, and white-skinned cultivars tested in the commercial cultivar trial (COMC) in 1996 and 1997 were susceptible (S) to moderately susceptible (MS) to this organism, except for Elba, which ranked as moderately resistant (MR). Yellow-fleshed cvs. Hertha, Santé, and Agria were screened in the late blight nursery (LB1) in 1997 and 1998 and classified as S to MS while Island Sunshine, Brador, and Aziza were classified as MR. The Scottish breeding line G6582-3 and U.S. breeding lines A90586-11, AWN86514-2, AWN85624-5, B0692-4, B0718-3, and B0767-2 were classified as resistant (R). Comparison among entries was based on the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC). Spearman rank correlation for AUDPC in the 1996 and 1997 COMC trials at 14 to 18 days after inoculation (r = 0.65, P < 0.01) was greater than any other interval tested. The Spearman rank correlation for AUDPC in the 1997 and 1998 LB1 trials at 14 to 18 days after inoculation was r = 0.87, P < 0.01 and increased only slightly in successive assessment dates, suggesting that, in Minnesota, effective evaluation of the foliar infection of late blight can occur at 18 days after inoculation or later. The average tuber blight incidence for the COMC trials at harvest was 10.0% in 1996 and 9.7% in 1997. The average tuber blight incidence for the LB1 trials at harvest was 4.3% in 1997 and 14.6% in 1998. Pearson correlations between tuber blight incidence and foliar disease for the COMC trials was very low; however, for the LBl trials, it was significant in both 1997 (r = 0.53, P < 0.01) and 1998 (r = 0.53, P < 0.01). Asymptomatic tubers harvested from the COMC trials developed additional tuber blight when stored 28 days at ambient temperatures and still more when stored for another 5 months at 5°C. Surviving tubers of nine entries were planted in field trials during 1997 and 1998 to determine if plants that develop from tubers exposed to P. infestans could manifest late blight in the subsequent season. Late blight failed to develop throughout the trials in either year.
