ABSTRACT Southern Brazil encompasses areas with a subtropical climate, with significant number of frosts, which challenge or even impair growing tropical eucalypts. Eucalyptus benthamii and E. smithii rise as alternative species of subtropical origin with considerable frost-tolerance. Here we accessed the genetic variation for diameter at breast height (DBH), height (H), volume (VOL), bifurcation and straightness of four provenances of E. smithii and two of E. benthamii, cultivated in randomized block design in a farm in Rio Negrinho, Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. We found considerable genetic variability for the traits, all directly associated with the selection for wood production and quality. In general, most of the genetic variability was found within the provenances (Q d ranged from 63.6 to 73.1%), except for straightness (Q d = 13.5% and Q st = 81.9%). Although predicting genetic gains with provenance trials might have some drawbacks, the application of the REML/BLUP method was able to predict genetic gains for the growth variables DBH, H and VOL for provenances of the two species. The highest genetic gains were predicted for a provenance of E. smithii originated from Australia (13% for DBH, 5% for H and 6.1% for VOL). However, the genetic gains from a E. benthamii provenance from Santa Catarina state were not negligible (1.2% for DBH, 1.8 for H and 2.2% for VOL). Our results provide insights for further progeny trials aimed at investigating additive genetic variance and their components, which could improve the genetic control of the traits and assist breeding programs of E. smithii and E. benthamii.

Genetic variability in progenies of Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus urophylla for tolerance to hydric deficit. Information on the adaptation and genetic potential of Eucalyptus under water deficit conditions is necessary owing to the increasing cultivation of the genus in regions considered as "forest frontiers". Therefore, the present study aimed to estimate genetic variability, genotypic and phenotypic correlations, and estimated genetic gains in progenies of E. grandis and E. urophylla. Two progeny tests (TP1 and TP2) were performed in the municipality of Vila Nova dos Martirios (state of Maranhão, Brazil), in 30-month-old plants. The experiment was carried out using a randomized block design, with five replicates, nine plants/square plot, and 144 treatments in TP1 and 264 in TP2. Statistical analysis was performed and genetic parameters were estimated. Individual and within-progeny heritabilities were corrected using the kinship coefficient for eachspecies. Genetic gains were low, ranging from 0.96 to 6.39% for E. grandis and 1.62 to 5.48% for E. urophylla. The diameter at breast height (DBH) showed a higher coefficient of genetic variation compared with the other measured characteristics, suggesting a higher potential for selection. High, positive, and significant correlations were observed between DBH and height (H), indicating the possibility of obtaining gains based on a single characteristic. Heritability was considered low, thus directly influencing the selection gains, which were lower than those commonly reported in other studies. These findings provide important information for breeding programs in areas of forest expansion.

The aim of this study was to evaluate grain yield (GY), popping expansion (PE), popping expansion disregarding the weight of unpopped kernels (PEW), and eleven other agronomic and morphological traits of 14 local popcorn varieties (LPV) from far west of the state of Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil. Two experiments were carried out, in a completely randomized block design with three replications, in different regions of Santa Catarina: one in the municipality of Florianópolis (east coast) and the other in Anchieta (western). Grain yield had the highest positive correlation with prolificacy (PRL) (r = 0.72) and number of grains per row (NGR) (r = 0.71), and a negative correlation with caryopsis circularity index (CCI) (r = −0.67). Variable PEW showed a positive correlation with CCI (r = 0.70) and with thickness/width ratio (TWR) (r = 0.70). Variety 574A stood out for high PE and PRL. The improvement of composite populations and of populations per se is a potential breeding strategy for LPV, based on the complementarity and correlation among variables and the GY, PE, and PEW values, CCI – HEP – first ear height/plant height relation, PH – plant height; PRL – WHG – weight of 100 grains; VHG - volume of 100 grains; EL – ear length; NRE – number of rows per ear; NGR – number of grains per row of ear; ED – ear diameter.

ABSTRACT Due to the high genetic variability found in sweet potato and a low number of cultivars available on the market, there are opportunities for necessary improvements in crop breeding programs. The selection indexes are a favorable strategy to achieve higher yields through genetic gains obtained with the future population. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the selection gain of agronomic characters from sweet potato accessions for root production and dual-aptitude. 95 accessions and two commercial cultivars (Braslandia Branca and Brazlândia Roxa) were evaluated. A randomized block design with three replications of ten plants per plot was used. The index proposed by Mulamba & Mock was used to select superior individuals. The evaluated population showed high genetic variability providing considerable selection gains, being recommended some clones for tests of value for cultivation and use. The VR13-61 accession was the most recommended for root production and VR13-11 and VR13-22 for dual-aptitude.

ABSTRACT The objectives of this work were to study the genetic variability and the interaction between genotypes and environments for cooking time and protein content of bean grains as well as to identify elite lines of Carioca grain type with short cooking time, high protein content and high adaptability and stability for these two traits. Sixteen experiments were conducted in a complete randomized block design with three replications during the rainy, dry and winter seasons, in Goiás, Distrito Federal, Pernambuco, Sergipe, Bahia and Paraná States, in 2009 and 2010. Each trial was composed by 16 elite lines of Carioca grain type and the data of cooking time and protein content were obtained. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and to stability and adaptability analysis, according to the methodology proposed by Annichiarico. Genetic variability was found for cooking time and for protein content among Carioca common bean elite lines; however, for protein content this variability is lower. The environmental effect is important for the expression of these traits and is larger than the genetic effect. The interaction between genotypes and environments is important for cooking time and for protein content of common beans. The lines CNFC 11951 and CNFC 11962 presents short cooking time, high protein content and high stability and adaptability for both traits.

Rubber tree [Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss.) Müell. Arg.] budgrafts of seven clones were evaluated on five contrasting sites in the plateau region of the São Paulo State, Brazil. The objective of this work was to study the phenotypic stability for girth growth. The experimental design was a randomized block design with three replications and seven treatments. Analysis of variance of girth at six-year plant growth indicated a highly significant clone x site interaction. Only linear sites and clone x site components of clone x year interaction were significant, indicating that the performance of clones over sites for this trait could be predicted. The clones GT 1 and PB 235 showed the greatest stability in relation to girth growth, with foreseen responses to change, introduced in the sites. The clones PB 235 and IAN 873 showed significative difference in relation to regression coefficient, representing clones with specific adaptability on favorable and unfavorable sites respectively. The clone GT 1 became the most promissory one in the study of stability and adaptability even showing low girth growth. Expected genetic gains from planting sites, along with estimates of clonal variance and repeatability of clonal means are generally greatest or close to the greatest when selection is done at the same site.

The objective of this work was to assess the genetic parameters and to estimate genetic gains in young rubber tree progenies. The experiments were carried out during three years, in a randomized block design, with six replicates and ten plants per plot, in three representative Hevea crop regions of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Twenty-two progenies were evaluated, from three to five years old, for rubber yield and annual girth growth. Genetic gain was estimated with the multi-effect index (MEI). Selection by progenies means provided greater estimated genetic gain than selection based on individuals, since heritability values of progeny means were greater than the ones of individual heritability, for both evaluated variables, in all the assessment years. The selection of the three best progenies for rubber yield provided a selection gain of 1.28 g per plant. The genetic gains estimated with MEI using data from early assessments (from 3 to 5-year-old) were generally high for annual girth growth and rubber yield. The high genetic gains for annual girth growth in the first year of assessment indicate that progenies can be selected at the beginning of the breeding program. Population effective size was consistent with the three progenies selected, showing that they were not related and that the population genetic variability is ensured. Early selection with the genetic gains estimated by MEI can be made on rubber tree progenies.

Sementes de aroeira foram obtidas a partir de 30 árvores de polinização livre, localizadas na Estação Ecológica do Instituto Florestal em Paulo de Faria - SP, em setembro de 1996. Foram instalados dois testes de progênies de aroeira (consorciado com mutambo e angico do campo – Exp 1 e homogêneo – Exp 2), em março de 1997, na Fazenda de Ensino e Pesquisa da FEIS/UNESP, em Selvíria - MS. O delineamento experimental utilizado foram os blocos casualizados, tanto no experimento consorciado como no homogêneo. Os caracteres nutricionais avaliados foram o conteúdo de: N, P, K, Ca, Mg e S. As estimativas de parâmetros genéticos foram obtidas em nível de média de parcelas. A herdabilidade, aos dois anos, variou de 0,05 (para o Mg) a 0,63 (para o N). Foi encontrada variabilidade genética para o teor de nutrientes e a característica mais indicada para um processo de seleção seria o conteúdo de N. All. under different condition of crop Abstract Aroeira seeds were obtained from 30 trees of open pollination, located in the Estação Ecológica do Instituto Florestal in Paulo de Faria – SP, in September, 1996. Two tests of Aroeira progeny were conducted (mutambo and angico together – Exp 1 and homogeneous – Exp 2), in March, 1997, at experimental station of FEIS/UNESP, in Selvíria – MS. A randomized completely block design, to both experiments was used. The nutrient content evaluated was: N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and S. The genetic estimates achieved to mean plot level and herdability on 2 year old trees was 0,05 to Mg and 0,63 to N. There was genetic variability to nutrient content and N was the better characteristic to selection process.

ABSTRACT The interaction Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc) x nematode and the genetic variability of Foc are the main problems with potential to affect the use of resistant varieties in the management of the Panama disease. The objective of this work was to evaluate the interaction between Foc and Meloidogyne javanica on the banana of the Prata Anã, Grande Naine and BRS Princesa cultivars. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design, with six treatments and ten replications, which differed in the inoculation time of each pathogen. Simultaneous inoculation with Foc and M. javanica, inoculation with Foc one week before inoculation with M. javanica, and inoculation with M. javanica one week before inoculation with Foc. In addition to the controls, Foc isolated, M. javanica isolated, and cultivars without the pathogens. The seedlings were transplanted in 3-liter pots with sterile soil infested with 40 grams of Foc inoculum at the concentration of 1x106CFU/gram and 1000 eggs and J2 of M. javanica. At the end of 56 days, the treatments with 'Grande Naine' presented the highest reproduction factors of M. javanica. In the 'Prata Anã' no interaction was observed between Foc x M. javanica. The treatments with simultaneous inoculation of the two pathogens, and with Foc a week before, in the 'BRS Princesa', presented the highest external disease indices (DI), which promoted the highest AUDPC. The highest internal DI were observed in the treatments Foc+Mj+Grande Naine, Foc+Mj+BRS Princesa, Mj+Grande Naine+Foc and Foc+BRS Princesa+Mj. The simultaneous presence of M. javanica and Foc increases the severity of the Panama disease in Grande Naine and BRS Princesa cultivars.

The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters of quantitative traits in a living germplasm collection of Eugenia dysenterica. The genetic material consisted of 110 progenies derived from 10 natural Eugenia dysenterica subpopulations sampled in the southeastern region of the state of Goiás. The experiment was established in a complete randomized block design, with 110 treatments, four replications and one tree per plot. The study variables were total height, stem diameter and respective growth rates. After the analysis of variance some genetic parameters were estimated. The levels of genetic variation in the collection were high and the highest proportion was found within subpopulations. Highest coefficients of heritability and genetic variation were observed in subpopulations from the counties Catalão, Três Ranchos, Cristalina and Senador Canedo. Considering the promising expected progress for growth traits, this collection can be converted into an unrogued seedling seed orchard, aiming the production of improved seed.

Biodiversitas 21: 3929-3937. Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea (L.) Verdc.) is a potential grain, which can be considered as an alternative source of protein and carbohydrate. Due to unavailability of commercial bambara groundut cultivar in Indonesia, the characterization of bambara groundnut landraces is an important step before developing cultivar with traits of interest. The objective of the research was to access genetic variability of Indonesian landraces of bambara groundnut with different seed coat colors based on morphological and molecular markers. The experiment was arranged as split-plot in a complete randomized block design with the main plot was cultivation methods and the sub plot was landraces. There were differences in leaf shape and pod shape among the landraces. There were two main clusters of Indonesian landraces of bambara groundnut with 88.28% similarity. The first cluster was Cream, Brown Sumedang, Black Sumedang and Black Tasikmalaya, and the second cluster was Black Sukabumi, Brown Gresik, Black Madura, and Black Gresik. The result based on SSR marker with capillary electrophoresis indicated Black Gresik and Black Madura landraces were different from other Indonesian landraces.  Cream Sumedang or Brown Sumedang from the first cluster and Black Gresik or Brown Gresik from the second cluster have the farthest distances for developing improved variety of bambara groundnut.
