ABSTRACT Introduction: Scoliosis is a three-dimensional deformity of the spine, characterized by a lateral shift that affects body posture. The Pilates Method (PM) promotes alterations in the biomechanics and neuromuscular activation pattern. Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze electromyography (EMG) and symmetrography (SMTG) technologies applied in the evaluation of neuromuscular and postural effects on right convex thoracolumbar scoliosis (RCTS) after applying a PM therapeutic protocol. Methods: This is an exploratory study of 5 male and female adolescents, with an average age of 14.4 years. The subjects underwent postural asymmetry assessments through SMTG and neuromuscular assessment through surface EMG of the trapezius (TRAP), erector spinae (ERE), oblique (OBLI) and rectus abdominis (RA) muscles. The electromyographic signals were processed in the temporal (EMGAmp) and spectral (EMGFmed) domains. The therapeutic protocol consisted of 24 sessions of Pilates floor exercises held twice a week with a duration of 45 minutes. Results: There was an improvement in scoliosis and asymmetric shoulders in one subject (20%) and in three other subjects with hip asymmetry. There was an improvement in one subject (33.33%), as demonstrated by SMTG. EMGAmp measurements demonstrated a significant difference between before and after (p≈0) and among the muscles (p≈0). EMGFmed measurements demonstrated that there was only a difference between before and after (p≈0). It was verified that the most noteworthy muscles in terms of EMGAmp were TRAP and ERE, emphasizing the existence of an increase in the mean EMGAmp for ERE. Muscle behavior for measurements in EMGFmed demonstrated a higher mean increase for RA and OBLI muscles. Conclusion: It is concluded that the EMG and SMTG technologies are important tests for monitoring the progress of scoliosis and in treatment decisions. Objective: Our study aimed to determine the possibility of using models created with a low-cost, paper based 3D printer in an operating room. Therefore influence of different methods of sterilization on models was tested and cytotoxicity of generated models was determined. Material and methods: 30 cuboids divided into three groups were used for verification of shape stability after sterilization. Each group was sterilized either with: Ethylene oxide in temperature 55˚C, Hydrogen peroxide gas plasma in temperature 60˚C or Gamma irradiation at 21˚C, 25kGy. Each cuboid was measured using calliper three times before and three times after sterilization. Results were analysed statistically in Statgraphics Plus. Statistical significance was determined as p< 0.05. Sixty cylinders divided into six groups were used for cytotoxicity tests. Three of those groups were covered before sterilization with 2-octyl-cyanoacrylate. Each group was sterilized with one of the previously described methods. Cytotoxicity was tested by Nanostructural and Molecular Biophysics Laboratory in Technopark Lodz using normal adult human dermal fibroblasts. Survival of cells was tested using spectrophotometry with XTT and was defined as ratio of absorbency of tested probe to absorbency of control probe. Calcein/Ethidium dyeing test was performed according to LIVE/DEAD Viability/Cytotoxicity Kit protocol. Observation was done under Olympus GX71 fluorescence microscope. Results: There was no statistically significant difference for established statistical significance p=0.05 in cuboids dimensions before and after sterilization regardless of sterilization method. In XTT analysis all samples showed higher cytotoxicity against normal, human, adult dermal fibroblast culture when compared to positive control. ANOVA statistical analysis confirmed that 2-octyl cyanoacrylate coating of paper model improved biological behaviour of the material. It decreased cytotoxicity of the model independently of sterilization method. In calcein/ethidium dyeing test due to the high fluorescence of the background caused by cylinders of analysed substance it was impossible to perform the exact analysis of the number of marked cells. Conclusions: Acquired results allow to conclude that Mcor Technology Matrix 300 3D paper-based models can be used in operating room only if covered with cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive. Nemesis relevance: We found no statistically significant difference in cuboids dimensions before and after sterilization regardless of sterilization method. Three-dimensional paper-based models present with high cytotoxicity without coating.

Background: Hammertoe deformities can seriously affect activity level and footwear. The use of prescription, mood-altering medications is very common, with some estimates as high as 25% of the population. Mood disorders, especially depression, negatively affect the results of medical and operative treatments. This study assessed the relationship of mood-altering medication use with the outcomes and complications of operative reconstruction of hammertoes. Methods: Data were prospectively collected from 116 patients who underwent hammertoe reconstruction, including demographic information, medical history, the use of mood-altering psychotropic medications (antidepressants, anxiolytics, hypnotics, and mood stabilizers), and postoperative complications. Preoperative patient-reported outcomes were measured using the visual analog scale (VAS) for pain and Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), which were repeated at 1-year follow-up. Results: A total of 36.2% of patients were taking psychotropic medications. Medication and nonmedication groups had similar pain VAS and SF-36 Physical Component Summary (PCS) scores before and after surgery. Compared with nonmedication patients, patients on psychotropic medications had significantly lower SF-36 Mental Component Summary (MCS) scores preoperatively ( P = .001) and postoperatively ( P = .006), but no significant difference in the change in MCS (ΔMCS) from preoperative to postoperative. Psychotropic medication use was associated with superficial wound infections ( P = .048), but not other complications. Conclusions: Patients taking psychotropic medications were equally likely to benefit from forefoot reconstruction as nonmedication patients. Preoperative and postoperative PCS and VAS were not significantly different between medication and nonmedication groups. Although the medication group had lower absolute MCS, they reported the same magnitude of improvement in MCS (ΔMCS) as the nonmedication group. Abstract Background Numerous methods have been described to treat midfacial aging. The authors compared 2 surgical methods aimed to improve the appearance of midface aging via their ability to improve midface contour: the transtemporal midface lift (with lower lid skin pinch) and lower blepharoplasty with fat transposition. Objectives The authors conducted a retrospective cohort study of all patients who underwent transtemporal midface lift and lower blepharoplasty with fat transposition performed by the senior author (V.Q.) from January 2014 to December 2015. Preoperative and 6-month postoperative profile photos were objectively examined for both surgical groups and compared. A total of 16 patients underwent lower blepharoplasty with fat transposition and 15 patients underwent trans temporal midface lift. Methods For comparison 1, the authors compared the angle at the orbital rim within each surgical group before and after surgery. For comparison 2, the degree of improvement in the midfacial contour was quantitatively compared between the 2 surgical groups. Results This study demonstrated that both procedures achieved a statistically significant improvement in the midfacial contour. There was no statistically significant difference between groups in severity of deformity preoperatively (mean preoperative orbital rim angle 131.5° for lower blepharoplasty group and 132.2° for transtemporal midface lift group, P = 0.90). Degree of improvement between the groups also did not significantly differ (P = 0.28). Conclusions Both approaches (transtemporal midface lift and lower blepharoplasty with fat transposition) can successfully improve the lower lid midface contour, as the authors demonstrated statistically significant improvement at 6 months postoperatively. Goal. The aim of the study was to compare the results of surface electromyography after injection of Botulinum toxin type A and standard medical therapy. Material and methods. The study encompassed 62 participants with chronic daily headaches (CDH). Group I included 26 patients with chronic migraine (15 treated with BTX-A injection and 11 treated with standard medical therapy), whilst, Group II comprised of 36 patients with chronic tension type headache (20 treated with BTX-A injection and 16 treated with standard medical therapy) with an average age of 32.1 ± 10.3 (M ± SD) years. Before and after therapy, clinical questionnaires, instrumental data, and headache episode characteristics were collected from all patients. To examine the differences between BTX - A injection and standard medical therapy, we measured muscle activity with surface EMG in patients with chronic daily headache before and after 3 months of treatment. On days when the patients had no headache attacks, the surface EMG was measured. Results. After treatment, surface electromyography data revealed a statistically significant difference in outcomes between the patients who received BTX-A injection and those who received standard medical therapy. Before treatment on surface EMG, all patients with chronic daily headache had high amplitude and velocity in the muscles under study, and there was no statistically significant difference between these groups, where p => 0.05. In this study, it was discovered that there was no statistically significant difference in pericranial and neck muscles dysfunction (before treatment between patients receiving BTX-A injection and standard medical therapy in Group I, patients with CM 95% CI -0.9087 - 0.4887; t = -0.607, df = 40, p = 0.5470 and Group II, patients with CTTH 95 % CI -0.5756 - 0.4356, t = -0.27, After treatment, there was a statistically significant difference between groups treated by BTX- A injection and standard medical therapy, with CM 95% CI 0.3258 - 1.4142, t = 3.231, df = 40, p = 0.0025 and CTTH 95 % CI 0.1020 - 1.1780, t = 2.381, df = 58, p = 0.0206, where p = <0.05. Conclusion. The obtained results testify the effectiveness of BTX-A injections compared to standard medical therapy in patients with CDH.

Background: There is limited evidence that syndesmotic implant removal (SIR) is beneficial. However, many surgeons advocate removal based on studies suggesting improved motion. Methodologic difficulties make the validity and applicability of previous works questionable. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of ankle dorsiflexion after SIR using radiographically measured motion before and after screw removal utilizing a standardized load. Methods: All patients undergoing isolated SIR were candidates for inclusion. Dorsiflexion was measured radiographically: (1) immediately before implant removal intraoperatively, (2) immediately after removal intraoperatively, and (3) 3 months after removal. A standardized torque force was applied to the ankle and a perfect lateral radiograph of the ankle was obtained. Four reviewers independently measured dorsiflexion on randomized, deidentified images. A total of 29 patients met inclusion criteria. All syndesmotic injuries were associated with rotational ankle fractures. There were 11 men (38%) and 18 women (62%). The mean, and standard deviation, age was 50.3 ± 16.9 years (range 19-80). Results: The mean ankle dorsiflexion pre-operatively, post-operatively, and at a 3-month follow-up was 13.7 ± 6.6 degrees, 13.3 ± 7.3 degrees and 11.8 ± 11.3 degrees, respectively ( P = .466). For subsequent analysis, 5 patients were excluded because of the potential confounding effect of retained suture button devices. Analysis of the remaining 24 patients (and final analysis of 21 patients who had complete 3-month follow-up) demonstrated similar results with no statistically significant difference in ankle dorsiflexion at all 3 time points. Conclusion: Removal of syndesmotic screws may not improve ankle dorsiflexion motion and should not be used as the sole indication for screw removal. Purpose Perthes’ disease (PD) results from loss of blood supply to the hip and can progress to femoral head deformity. MRI in the early course of the disease can provide data on the initial extent of infarct. Vascularity of the femoral head is assessed by gadolinium-enhanced MRI (contrast MRI), which may be improved by the digital subtraction technique (subtraction MRI). We hypothesized that gadolinium-enhanced MRI without subtraction was comparable with subtraction MRI in depicting the femoral head perfusion. Methods In all, 34 patients (34 hips) with unilateral PD had gadolinium-enhanced MRI as part of a prospectively randomized study. Nine patients had three MRIs, 15 had two and ten had a single MRI. Measurement of perfusion of the femoral head (MRI perfusion index) was obtained using digital image analysis on all the MRIs, including both before and after subtraction. A paired sample t-test was performed to compare the measurements. Results The mean age of the patients was 8.9 years (sd 1.6). At the time of diagnosis, the subtraction MRI did not elicit a statistically significant difference in MRI perfusion index measurements when compared with the contrast MRI (p = 0.19). The same findings were found when including all patients at various stages of the disease (p = 0.30). Qualitatively, although some subtraction MRI images showed superior delineation of epiphysis, there are no significant differences throughout the whole series. Conclusion Although the current literature supports the increasing role of the subtraction MRI for PD management, our study proposed that the contrast MRI without subtraction technique appears adequate in assessing femoral head perfusion. This study aimed to create a thick hydroxyapatite (HAp) film on the surface of a human tooth by using a newly developed powder jet deposition (PJD) device for dental handpieces, and sought to examine the microstructural and mechanical properties of the resulting HAp film. The film was evaluated on three-dimensional view, surface roughness, Vickers hardness, and bonding strength before and after artificial aging through thermal cycling (555°C) for 500 cycles (30 sec for each cycle, 20 sec of dwell time).The HAp particles in the deposited film were densely packed, and the HAp films three-dimensional microstructure and its rough surface were maintained after thermal cycling. There was no significant difference in either the HAp films Vickers hardness or the bonding strength between the film and the enamel substrate before and after thermal cycling. The HAp films created in this study demonstrated excellent microstructural and mechanical properties even after the application of thermal stress. We demonstrated the possibility of using a new type of powder jet deposition (PJD) method we developed to form a new type of interface between the tooth and biomaterials. Consequently, we propose the use of this method in new dental treatments.

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the clinical and radiological evolution, indications and complications of the types of osteotomies in patients with disturbed sagittal balance (SB) resulting from post-traumatic kyphosis. The SB can be measured with a plumb line from the center of the body of C7 to S1, which allows recognizing the misalignment. The imbalance can be corrected by osteotomy. Methods: Thirty patients with SB loss due to post-traumatic kyphosis were studied from January 2014 to December 2017. SPO, PSO and VCR were performed to evaluate the degree of kyphosis before and after surgery, the Oswestry questionnaire was applied and the degree of correction, the days of hospital stay and transoperative bleeding were assessed. Results: Age, 50 years, SD = 14, follow-up time: 2-3 years. We performed 11 (36.7%) osteotomies of S-P, 17 (56.7%) pedicle subtractions and 2 (6.6%) vertebrectomies. Most of the lesions were found between levels L1 and L2; the complications were dehiscence of the surgical wound in 4 patients (13.3%) and infection in 2 (6.6%). The minimum surgical time was 3 hours; the Oswestry questionnaire did not showed statistically significant difference during the preoperative period, however, considerable improvement was observed 2 years after surgery. Conclusions: The use of corrective vertebral osteotomies significantly re-establishes the spinopelvic balance altered by different pathologies. It allows correcting in a single surgery the sagittal balance, achieving corrections from 10° to 40°, depending on the type of osteotomy performed, being a safe and effective procedure, which allows to restore the spinopelvic balance, improving the quality of life of the patients. Purpose: The seal of the interface formed at the implant-abutment connection is essential for the long-term success of the implant-supported restoration. The aim of this study was to analyze the mechanical behavior and the effect of cyclic fatigue before and after in the marginal fit of implant-abutment according to the manufacturing technique of the abutment. Materials and methods: Machined titanium abutments (DENTIS), cast abutments with Nickel-Chromium alloy (VeraBond II), and manufacturing custom milled Zirconia abutments (Zirkonzahn) were evaluated. The implant-abutment assemblies were subjected to cyclic loads of 133 N at a frequency of 19.1 Hz for 200,000 cycles. The microgap was measured using Scanning Electronic Microscope and the distribution of compressive stress by the three-dimensional Finite Element (FE) method. Results: The microgap measurement values of the machined abutments were 1.62 μm and 1.92 μm, cast abutments were 14.14 μm, and 28.44 μm, and the milled abutments were 14.18 μm and 20.15 μm before and after cyclic fatigue, respectively. Only the cast abutments and the machined abutments showed a statistically significant difference before and after cyclic fatigue (p ≤ 0.05). The FE analysis showed that the critical areas of compressive stress were located at the implant-abutment connection, increasing in the cast abutments and decreasing in the milled and the machined abutments. Conclusion: Cyclic fatigue exerts an effect on the dimensions of the microgap at the implant-abutment interface before and after loading; this microgap depends of the type of abutment material and the manufacturing technique.

ABSTRACT Introduction Dehydration has been described as one of the main factors of reduced performance in combat sports activities, leading to death in extreme cases. Objective To investigate the pre-training hydration status and changes in fluid homeostasis during two taekwondo training sessions. Methods Eighteen male college athletes (age 22.6 ± 3.37 years) were assessed. The study design aimed to reproduce the conditions of a 90-minute taekwondo training session, divided into three stages: a) warm-up exercises (20 min); b) poomsae (30 min) and c) technical training (40 min). The athletes had ad libitum water intake during training. To assess the hydration status we considered body mass (BM), the amount of liquid consumed and urine output, which enabled us to establish absolute and relative fluid loss in kg and percentage as well as the sweating rate. We also considered urine specific gravity (USG), urine color (U-COL), and subjective sensation of thirst (Sthirst) before and after the training session. Pre- and post-training results were compared separately in each session and between sessions. Results There was a significant difference (P<0.05) in pre-training BM between the two days of training. There was a significant difference (P<0.05) in the final BM on both days of the experiment. Most subjects had relative dehydration below 2%. A significant difference (P<0.05) was recorded pre and post training for U-COL and Sthirst, with the highest rates obtained at the end of each session. Participants always started training at a low dehydration status (USG >1,020g.ml-1). Conclusions The athletes tended to start the training sessions in dehydration status, which increases over the course of the training. Ad libitum water intake was not sufficient to balance fluid loss. Changes in fluid levels between sessions were similar.
