ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the physical activity level (PAL) and the total daily energy expenditure (EE-TDEE) in a sample of ≥60y subjects from Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Methods: A convenience sample of 88 subjects recruited from recreational physical activity programs wore an accelerometer around the waist for seven consecutive days for at least 10h/day. Minute-by-minute EE was estimated from the counts per minute (CPM) data, and the daily sum yielded the TDEE. PAL (TDEE/BMR) with BMR calculated with the FAO/WHO predictive equation and a population-specific equation. Body composition was assessed by DXA. Results: Mean age (SD) was 69.2 (5.8) years, the prevalence of overweight and obesity was 36.4 and 25.0%, respectively, and excess body fat was 39.8%. The subjects spent 600min/day engaged in sedentary activities (CPM<100). Men engaged in 30min of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (CPM≥1,952) daily, on average. The subjects were active on 34.5 and 18.0% of the weekdays and weekend days with a 1,400 steps/day difference between these days. TDEE was 1,731.5 (348.7) and 1,356.3 (223.7) kcal/day depending on the BMR prediction equation used. Mean PAL was lower than the maintenance level. Conclusions: The high prevalence of sedentary activities and the low percentage of subjects who met the physical activity recommendations indicate that physical activity programs must be adjusted so that the enrolled subjects can meet the physical activity recommendations, preferably with the activities objectively monitored. El objetivo del presente estudio fue examinar los niveles objetivos de actividad física durante las clases de Educación Física en adolescentes chilenos, identificando posibles diferencias según el género. En el presente estudio participaron 156 estudiantes de enseñanza básica de Chile (69 niñas y 87 varones, edad media = 13.5 ± .7 años). Se eliminaron 34 participantes por no cumplir los criterios mínimos de registro, seleccionando finalmente a 122 adolescentes. Se evaluaron los niveles objetivos de actividad física de una clase de Educación Física mediante el acelerómetro GT3X. Los resultados mostraron que ningún participante alcanzó las recomendaciones de tiempo de práctica de actividad física moderada-vigorosa del 50% durante las clases de Educación Física. La mayoría de los estudiantes (50.7% de chicos y 72.5% de chicas) acumularon menos del 10% del tiempo de clase de Educación Física en actividad física moderada-vigorosa. Los chicos presentaron mayores valores de actividad física moderada-vigorosa que las mujeres (p < .05), pero no se encontraron diferencias en el tiempo sedentario ni en la actividad física ligera (p > .05). Los adolescentes chilenos no cumplen las recomendaciones de actividad física moderada-vigorosa en clases de Educación Física. Se discuten diferentes estrategias de incremento del tiempo empleado en dicha actividad física moderada-vigorosa como medidas a considerar. Abstract. The aim of the present study was to examine objective levels of physical activity during Physical Education (PE) classes in Chilean adolescents, identifying possible differences according to gender. A sample composed of 156 Chilean adolescents (69 female and 87 male, average age = 13.5 ± .7 years) participated in this study. A total of 34 adolescents did not meet the inclusion criteria and were excluded, with 122 participants finally considered for the data analyses. Objective levels of physical activity were assessed by means of GT3X accelerometers during a PE lesson. The results showed that none of the participants reached the recommended 50% of total PE time at moderate-to-vigorous physical activity level. Most of the students (50.7% males and 72.5% females) accumulated less than 10% of the PE time at moderate-to-vigorous physical activity level. Boys showed higher values of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity than girls (p < .05); however, there were no gender differences in sedentary behavior or light physical activity time (p > .05). Chilean adolescents do not meet the moderate-to-vigorous physical activity recommendations during PE lessons. Different strategies are discussed in order to increase the time spent at moderate-to-vigorous physical activity in PE.

Activity intensity is a potential determinant of activity-induced energy expenditure. Tri-axial accelerometery is the most objective measurement technique for the assessment of activity intensity, in combination with doubly-labelled water for the measurement of energy expenditure under free-living conditions. Data on the effects of subject characteristics, including body size and age, and exercise training on the relationship between activity intensity and daily energy expenditure are reviewed. Average daily metabolic rate and non-basal energy expenditure are positively related to body size. The duration and intensity of physical activities do not need to be equivalent to the energy spent on activity. Obese subjects spend more energy on physical activity but can perform fewer activities, especially high-intensity (weight-bearing) activities, because of their higher body weight. Physical activity generally declines gradually from about 60 years of age onwards. Most subjects >80 years have an activity level well below the level defined for sedentary middle-aged adults. Spending relatively more time on low-intensity activities has a negative effect on the mean physical activity level. To obtain a higher physical activity level does not necessarily imply high-intensity activities. In an average subject 25% of the activity-induced energy expenditure may be attributed to high-intensity activities. Exercise training, as a form of high-intensity activity, affects the physical activity level more in younger subjects than in elderly subjects.

1. Our objectives were to measure total energy expenditure, the daily variation in total energy expenditure and the physical activity level in a group of HIV-positive subjects using the bicarbonate-urea method. The study also aimed to assess the practicalities of using the bicarbonate-urea technique in free-living conditions. 2. Total energy expenditure was measured with the bicarbonate-urea method over 2 consecutive days (1 day in one subject) in 10 male patients with HIV infection (median CD4 count = 30). Resting energy expenditure was measured by indirect calorimetry. Physical activity level (total energy expenditure/resting energy expenditure) was calculated from these measurements and from activity diaries. 3. Resting energy expenditure was found to be 7.46 ± 0.87 MJ/day, 5% higher than predicted values. Total energy expenditure was 10.69 ± 1.95 MJ/day with an intra-individual day-to-day variation of 6 ± 6%. The measured physical activity level was 1.42 ± 0.14, higher than the diary estimate of 1.34 ± 0.16 (P = 0.029), and there were large inter-method differences in individual values. The subcutaneous infusion of bicarbonate was well tolerated and did not seem to restrict normal activities. 4. Total energy expenditure was not elevated in the group of HIV-positive subjects when compared with reference values for normal subjects. The physical activity level of the patients in this study was lower than that measured using other techniques in healthy young men, but was compatible with that expected for people leading a sedentary lifestyle. Reductions in physical activity in patients with HIV are likely to contribute to the wasting process and physical activity level may thus be a clinically useful measure. This study has also provided the first tracer estimate of the day-to-day variation in total energy expenditure. The bicarbonate-urea method represents an important new investigative tool for measuring total energy expenditure which has previously only been possible within the confines of a whole-body calorimeter or using the expensive doubly labelled water method.

One of the aims of Identification and Prevention of Dietary- and Lifestyle-Induced Health Effects in Children and Infants (IDEFICS) validation study is to validate field measures of physical activity (PA) and energy expenditure (EE) in young children. This study compared the validity of uniaxial accelerometry with heart-rate (HR) monitoring vs. triaxial accelerometry against doubly labeled water (DLW) criterion method for assessment of free-living EE in young children. Forty-nine European children (25 female, 24 male) aged 4–10 yr (mean age: 6.9 ± 1.5 yr) were assessed by uniaxial ActiTrainer with HR, uniaxial 3DNX, and triaxial 3DNX accelerometry. Total energy expenditure (TEE) was estimated using DLW over a 1-wk period. The longitudinal axis of both devices and triaxial 3DNX counts per minute (CPM) were significantly ( P < 0.05) associated with physical activity level (PAL; r = 0.51 ActiTrainer, r = 0.49 uniaxial-3DNX, and r = 0.42 triaxial Σ3DNX). Eight-six percent of the variance in TEE could be predicted by a model combining body mass (partial r2 = 71%; P < 0.05), CPM-ActiTrainer (partial r2 = 11%; P < 0.05), and difference between HR at moderate and sedentary activities (ModHR − SedHR) (partial r2 = 4%; P < 0.05). The SE of TEE estimate for ActiTrainer and 3DNX models ranged from 0.44 to 0.74 MJ/days or ∼7–11% of the average TEE. The SE of activity-induced energy expenditure (AEE) model estimates ranged from 0.38 to 0.57 MJ/day or 24–26% of the average AEE. It is concluded that the comparative validity of hip-mounted uniaxial and triaxial accelerometers for assessing PA and EE is similar.

En el presente estudio de la población adolescente de la Comunidad Autónoma de Canarias se evidencia que son minoría los adolescentes que cumplen las pautas o recomendaciones de actividad física, mostrando bajos niveles de práctica de actividad física de intensidad moderada y vigorosa, niveles que se muestran alejados de las recomendaciones establecidas para este grupo de edad e insuficientes para alcanzar los efectos positivos que se derivan de la práctica de actividad física, siendo estos bajos niveles más acentuados en las chicas que en los chicos. Estas evidencias justifican la necesidad de cambiar esta tendencia y promover cambios sustanciales en los hábitos de práctica de actividad física de nuestros niños y adolescentes. Para procurar este cambio, se muestran como muy adecuado, la puesta en práctica de programas de intervención extracurriculares, junto con el necesario incremento del horario lectivo que en la actualidad se destina a la materia de educación física en el vigente currículo escolar de la Enseñanza Básica. Palabra clave: actividad física, niveles de actividad física, adolescentes, recomendaciones de práctica de actividad física, análisis del patrón de actividad física, sedentarismo.Abstract: The present study about adolescent from the Canary Islands, evidence that a minority of adolescents follow the guidelines or recommendations for physical activity, showing low level of physical activity of moderate intensity and vigorous, levels which are shown away from the established recommendations for this group of age, and insufficient to attain the positive effects arising from the practice of physical activity, and these low levels are more accentuated in girls than in boys. These evidences, justify, the need to change this trend and promote substantial changes in practice habits of physical activity of children and adolescents. To ensure this change, are shown as very adequate, the implementation of physical education programs out of the school schedule, along with the necessary increase in teaching hours which now is assigned to physical education in the current curriculum of Basic Education.Key words: physical activity, physical activity level, adolescents, physical activity recommendations, physical activity pattern analysis, sedentary lifestyle.

The objective of the research is to analyze physical activity, energy intake</span></em><em><span style="font-size: 10pt;" lang="en-us" xml:lang="en-us">, nutritional status, of women workers at Tea Plantation PTPN VIII Bandung, West Java.</span></em><em><span style="font-size: 10pt;" lang="en-us" xml:lang="en-us"> The cross sectional design was used in this study to elaborate physical activity, nutritional status, and productivity of tea picker’s women. The criteria of study sample were tea picker’s women at cluster area of Malabar tea plantation of PTPN VIII Bandung, having infant and they were willing to be interviewed. The total number of 92 women sample was chosen randomly. Primary data consisted of physical activity recall (2x24 hours), food consumption <span>recall</span> (2x24 hours), anthropometry data (weight and height), and productivity (passage of tea sprout). Secondary data were included data of PT Perkebunan Nusantara VIII Bandung, West Java. The result showed that more than a half of samples having active or moderate physical activity level (PAL). The physical activity level of samples during work day (average PAL=1.87) was higher than holiday (average PAL=1.69) (p&lt;0.05). The physical activity was related to energy expenditure. According to Schofield equation, energy expenditure of sample during workday (average=2362 kcal) was significantly higher (p&lt;0.05) than day off (average=2134 kcal). This result is related to Oxford equation, energy expenditure of sample during workday (average=2223 kcal) was significantly higher than holiday (average=2011 kcal). The related factors of energy expenditure are body weight and age. Energy intake on workday and day off were respectively </span></em><em><span style="font-size: 10pt;" lang="en-us" xml:lang="en-us">2362 kcal and 2134 kcal</span></em><em><span style="font-size: 10pt;" lang="en-us" xml:lang="en-us">. The average energy adequacy level during workday and day off according to Schofield and Oxford equation were </span></em><em><span style="font-size: 10pt;" lang="en-us" xml:lang="en-us">not significantly different</span></em><em><span style="font-size: 10pt;" lang="en-us" xml:lang="en-us">, respectively </span></em><em><span style="font-size: 10pt;" lang="en-us" xml:lang="en-us">97,2% and 103,3%. </span></em><em><span style="font-size: 10pt;" lang="en-us" xml:lang="en-us">The majority of samples had normal nutritional status, and 30.4% of the sample was overweight.
